today for my dad's B-day. This needs to be quite dependable and I'm quite happy with the WD name, but not having been looking for components or anything computery for a while I'm a little behind on the times.

Opinions greatly appreciated! Any suggestions, ~£50 and pocket HDD preferably.

I've had that exact one for a while. I would recommend it. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

I've just plugged it in and the oldest file on it is from April last year, so that's it a year old now. It's ultra portable and I like the fact it works on both PC and PS3 and it doesn't need any extra power.

Yep, I indeed have a Passport (albeit the previous model), and it's been excellent. I've carried it just about everywhere and it's never had a problem. I even run TDU straight off it with no problems.

One thing to bear in mind is that (apparently) the USB ports of some PCs don't provide enough power for it. I've never found one where this is an issue, though.

I've used mine in 2 desktops and 2 laptops and a PS3 and it works fine with all of them.

The only issue I have is that my pinnacle video transfer doesn't provide enough power for it, but that's not really the drive's fault.

I have the 500GB model of the WD Passport Essential and it is awesome. No external power necessary and it works fairly quick.

Granted I have only had it for a month, but from that experience I highly recommend it.

I learned on another forum that some of the WD Passport drives are USB 2.0 only. The enclosure PCB is part of the drive; consequently, they have no internal SATA connections. It's probably not a problem, but be aware in case you expect to reuse that enclosure for another drive.

I've been using mine for about a year now and it works well, and personally for its size I don't think there's anything better. Be careful with it though, a while back my mate dropped his (was watching films on his laptop placed on a chair, somehow it swung around and it fell off onto the floor) and he lost everything.

They're reasonably solid so there shouldn't be too much to worry about. You might as well give it a go, I got mine from ebuyer as well and right now its £20 cheaper than when I got mine!

Thanks guys again 👍 Has been ordered.

@hamstrings- I assure you it won't be taken apart, ever!
@Pyrelli - It'll probably spend most of its time on the desktop with the desktop PC, but I didn't want to get him something else to crowd the already quite crowded area and being as petite as it is purely a bonus.

I can definately recommend the WD brand
My dad's got a 1TB WD external drive and its fantastic
