Weather/dynamic time of day has caused jagged shadows. Should it have been left out?

Here is a good comparison, at least I think so. Have a look at the professional flight simulators that have full 3D chassis movement and such, used generally for training purposes. The ones I have seen use what is essentially Microsoft flight simulator as a basis, then they integrate all the various real cockpit functions and gauges into the "real" cockpit to work with the programming. Last time I checked, these don't have perfect shadows or perfect graphics, even though a simulator such as this can cost $5 million or more. We should be lucky we can build our own simulators, if I may call it that, for as little as $1000 with a PS3, G27 wheel, and a copy of GT5, and still end up with similar results, less the full 3D chassis movement.

We live in a world of limitations... accept it, there is limit to everything.

but what about the shadows ...

It's a good thing that folks are complaining about the shadow, maybe there are very few things to complain about.

Of course it shouldn't have been left out, I can live with some jaggy shados, when I am piling round the Nurburgring or La Sarthe at night I won't even be able to see any shadows!

Shadows guys really.. Its a game guys everything is not going to be perfect.

Exactly. 👍

LOL...it's actually pretty civil at GTPlanet, because we are well-informed. Just head to Gamespot and check out some pretty uninformed complaints regarding damage, premium/standard, cockpit view, the same arguments over and over again. Sigh...I seriously don't know if people understand the word "Simulator" anymore.

The internet is a place where small, untalented minds can freely pick apart the wonderful things created by people with actual skill and intelligence. I'd like to assume it's a bunch of unappreciative children, but the sheer number of self-proclaimed 'experts' out there makes that hard to believe.

its interesting that you point this out...because, while i am no self-proclaimed genius, i am posting as an alias out here and as an anonymous poster but i assure you that i am well-versed in both art and music and that's probably why it bugs me so much. (and, yes, in real life i do type with capital letters by the way...again, forum etiquette you see here.)

so, there are many of us who want to see GT5 succeed in every way and, again, i'm not ripping it apart rather hoping that PD reads this and considers a patch. simple as that. i am still buying it though and this will be my favorite racing game of all time i assure you. :) 👍

One thing to remember: we still don't know exactly what the release patch will bring. It could partially fix the shadows. Seriously, it is clearly a non-issue for me as I know the limited capabilities of the PS3 :) Get over it and enjoy the 16 players races at night on the ring ;)

I don't think it will fix "issues" with the shadows becasue there is nothing to "fix" so to speak, as they are clearly intentionally done like that because of performance issues.
If they could make it better they would have in the first place. PS3 hasn't had any changes since gt5 has been in development, so I don't see why they would radically realize they can improve the shadows in the next few days before release.

I think far more an issue is stuff like this:

Which is actually in your face distracting you while you are driving...

I haven't complained about anything yet, but the shifting animations in that video look terrible and do not match at all.

That's a shame too because I remember watching another video where the shifting animation looked much improved from the demos. Can't recall which one it was though. Maybe certain cars are worse than others, like the shadows?

I don't say radically, but one never knows what kind of stuff they can come up with ^^

Is there a confirmed "release patch" or is that just speculation on something that might happen?

All I can say is that if there is a release day patch and it changes many significant things about the game, that's really gonna suck for the potentially millions of customers who don't have broadband...

That's the exact video I was thinking of when people said they won't notice them. Huge jagged shadows on the roof and the dash, immediately adjacent to the windshield, as well as on the gauges. I still think I can ignore it, though.

To people saying NFS looks better, I agree. But the reason is that NFS isn't doing intensive physics calculations—the driving is very arcade-like and not complex at all. That allows them to do a lot more visually.

The comment was not specifically directed at you, sorry, I just chose this thread to give my sole comment on the nitpicking. I had to get it out, the last couple weeks have been brutal.

Regarding your point above, about being well-versed: Knowing they might have done better, as always, is only part of the story. Sometimes things just do not go as planned, perfection cannot be achieved, but yet the product must be delivered. I just want people to respect this. 👍

You can also 'do a lot more visually' when you go for 720p @30fps. However I think Kaz went for the smoother, faster framerate for a better driving experience.

I'm not sure about the need for 1080p (720p looks fine to me really. Even on my 50'' 1080p TV you have to sit pretty damn close to it to see a difference) but I do agree with the 60fps choice.

For everyone complaining don't play the game. For the guy who created this thread( walks in your house and kick you in the balls) have a nice day

As I said earlier in the thread, it's more speculation ^^

Look at all the posts of complainers about complainers. Don't you guys realise that you're doing the exact thing that you complain about? Well then, why don't you just join the complainers? You can see here that overcrowding a forum which is meant to talk about what you would call a complaint isn't helping anything so: If you can't beat them maybe its time to join them?

LEt me get this thread back into something more interesting then "stop complaining or i kick u in the balls have a nice day".

I will start with a fresh complaint.

Wasn't kazunori the one who said "The problem with GT5 is that it actually looks better then real life"? Uhm yes he did. Here, I found it for you:

Wouldn't we all be fools now if we would agree with the man after everything we've seen and learned?

Not reading the whole thread.

Would I trade in weather and time of day just to avoid some jagged shadows? Dude, no.

Quick question though, do you have two 10's for a 5?

I'm begging PD to add a patch, how can they let this through to the final game? I mean the standard cars don't look as bad... Have you guys seen the camera focus blur, it looks terrible, let's all hope for the patch.

If nothing changes, then Bumper view for me, this is terrible.

The Premium replays are concerning.

GT5P cockpit always had ugly jaggy shadows. GT5P replays have jaggy shadows too.

55tt.jpg

But there's a lot of flickering and glitches in GT5 that ruin the replay. It performs much worse than GT5P and from the crappy videos so far it looks as though more shadows are lower res too. Like the shadows cast on to the track. GT5P had much better shadows cast from the cars. These huge jaggy shadows cast on to the track ruin it.

I would've thought at least PD can get the Premium section of the game right.

well said...i have heard other statements like, "we are doing things that should only be seen on the PS4."

OK, might wanna not refer to it as the release day patch as that sounds like you know there is going to be one.
people, i still think you should all go out and buy this and i think that some members (or whoever they are) are using this "first day patch" speculation as a sort of "damage control" to shut us up when they know we're right. i mean, come on...again, look at the pic here...these shadows look downright ugly:

Check out the shadow bugs and the huge low res shadows cast on to the track.

One thing GT5P had was great replays even though it had a jaggy shadows cast on to the car model itself. You don't always see it unless you stop or zoom in. The video above, you can't help see the awful shadows underneath the cars.

GT5P was not like that.

Leave this to Minecraft, not GT5.

wow thank you for posting that. this is exactly what i'm talking about guys...this looks actually BUGGY and flawed, as if there is something actually wrong with their code:

shadowproblem.jpg

Watch it youself - about 1:20 in the video here:

thank you for posting this out chromatic9.

THIS NEEDS TO BE PATCHED.

I think that's called Z-fighting if I remember right. Should be able to be patched. That's damn near game braking its soo bad.

Consoles are incapable of supporting a game of this graphical level AND 100% soft shadows. Sorry. What you are seeing here is a shortcomming of hardware that cannot be upgraded.

Want soft shadows everywhere, super high levels of FSAA, high resolution, high fidelity AI, great physics modeling, dynamic weather/time of day, and 60 fps? Tell Kaz to make GT for the PC.

If the low resolution shadow map is so irritating, than don't buy the game. OR, buy the game and hope it is patched. OR, buy the game and enjoy it for what it is.

i would say maybe you're right but keep in mind that this game has been in development for 5 years and need for speed hot pursuit has been in development for two and just look at how crisp the shadows are and the sheer quality. now, this is my ONLY major complaint about GT5 and it should be fixed regardless, especially since it is embarrassing for them that GT5 prologue didn't even have this issues. how could they take THAT big of a step backwards? and, yes, that's a pretty big step backwards in my book. :ouch:

60/2 is 30, so if you just take the numbers that is 30 cars a year that they finish. Now take 1000/5 that is 200, so in 1 year they managed to "make" 200 cars in a years period. If you take Hot Pursuits numbers 100/30 you would get around 33 years for the same quality on the cars. I do know that all the time is not spent on the cars, but 1000 cars is alot to show for in 5 years for how good they look.
