So it begins, the clash of the Titans (WEC Edition). Featuring Audi and Toyota and their incredible machines, cars that race as the current pinnacle of motorsports, at least regarding automotive engineering and innovation

So, the stage is set, the pieces are all in place for this first round of the 2013 WEC, first time this year Audi and Toyota will face each other to race.



Here's a glimpse of what happened last year:

Pole Position was for Audi (#1, driven by Treluyer) with a 1.43.663

Race was a very close battle. It was won by Audi but Toyota, fielding only one car, managed to finish second, splitting the two audi crews in the podium. Also noteworthy that all three teams finished the race in the same lap. Toyota in only their second outing did show to any doubters still in existence that they meant business.

Still in LMP1, but in the privateers battle, Strakka's HPD fought the Rebellions and, like Toyota did to Audi, managed to finish 5th, splitting both Lolas (4th and 6th). Again, all three cars finished in the same lap.

In LMP2 victory eluded the HPD cars too, with top honors going to a Nissan-Oreca from ADR-Delta. All 3 first cars from this category also finished in the same lap after 6 hours of battling.

Both GTE categories went to AF COrse and their fabulous 458 Italias, although it must be said GTE Am was won on the track by Larbre's Corvette, only to get excluded from the results later because the fire extinguisher on the car had its validity expired (!?!?!?! REALLY ??!!!!?? at this level of competition !??!?!?! )

Good thread.

Looking forward to getting the season started. Toyota is bringing two 2012-spec TS030s to Silverstone, the onus will be on Audi to take this race. Still, I'm holding out hope Toyota can get the win.

And really looking forward to seeing Kobayashi at his new job.

Silverstone in April though. :nervous: That will be interesting.
 
Looking forward to the ELMS race aswell, little bit dissappointed that on sunday the 6 hours and the BES are at the same time..... It sure is gonna be a busy sunday !!!

I prefer the 1981 programme.

That was the debut of the Ford C100 Group C car. It and the Kremer Porsche 917 fought it out for the win until both succumbed to mechanical issues leaving the 3rd placed Lola T600 to win.
 
Will this be streamed online? Man, it's tough for those who enjoy racing in the USA to get Euro races on TV.
 
Also, not sure if Motors TV broadcasts in NA but they'll have most of the races of the entire weekend at Silverstone.

That must mean that either the TS030 isn't ready yet, and they may possibly run behind schedule. Or they have some stuff on the TS030 they plan on keeping hidden until Le Mans arrives.
 
I'm betting on the latter. Their goal is LE MANS. They've just posted a video that makes this abundantly clear. Could be a better video though ....

My Preview:

LMP1: Toyota 2 vs Audi 2. First time ever we have an even match. Hell yeah. Also great to see Strakka back, reckon they will give Rebellion a run for there money if they run trouble-free.

LMP2: The new Lotus cars. By god they look good, hope they race unsponsored, they will look classy as hell. Minassian in #49 with Kaffer, one to watch I reckon.

GTE: 4 Astons. 4. Did I just say 4 Astons? :drool: Be surprised if they don't get at least a win in either GTE class. Not underestimating AF Corse (Kobayashi!!!!) and that Larbre Vette. And it may be Am entry, but Felbermayr know how to win.

Roll on sunday, green flag around 12pm I take it?

No chance, that team is being run under license to use the name but they are otherwise totally unaffiliated with Lotus. They're using it to bring in interest and sponsorship. As I understand it, no money is coming from Lotus in that deal, so I think they'll need the sponsors!

Since Bahar was removed from Lotus, all Lotus sponsorship and motorsport programmes were terminated.
What remains are license deals where teams are using the name in order to generate interest and sponsorship as we have here with Kodewa (Kolles) and with the Enstone F1 team.
 
Think I'll be heading to this on Sunday, try out my new lens. :)
 
Any predictions?

LMP1: With Audi debuting new cars and Toyota bringing 2012 models, I think the #1 should be the favourite, though I wouldn't count out any of the four factory cars. The #12 Rebellion will most likely be best of the privateers.

LMP2: My money would be on the ADR-Delta (#25), but the OAK and Pecom cars should be competitive as well.

GTE Pro: No idea. Hard to tell. Anybody, except the #99, is a possible winner at this point.

GTE Am: The #61 Ferrari, #95 Aston and the #50 Larbre are my frontrunners in this class.
 
I was thinking about going to watch this but I got the dates wrong!

Really love the sounds of the LMP's, purely awesome

Nicely done, so am I! Going down in a Ferrari is bloody cool. Were going down in the Audi again this year. So you can guess who I'll be supporting ;)

Rebellion still running Lotus Sponsorship

The rain affected practice, and with a dry race looking likely there wasn't much time to set up the cars. Remember last season Audi was also faster and qualified ahead but Toyota edged out a lead big enough to challenge for the win. That's what matters- race pace. Not practice hotlaps.

Based on previous, the Paddock is open, but the teams back the trucks up to the garages, and put up hoardings to keep prying eyes away, and tourists out of the good bits. If you push your luck, or are a little cheeky, you can see some cool stuff, and if you're lucky (or hang about for ages) you'll get to meet some of the drivers. But the access isn't on a par with stuff like BTCC, or the 24 hour race at Silverstone.
 
Time for some facts-

Audi took pole last time at Silverstone, but Toyota was the faster car during the race (on average) ;). Audi still won though! What's impressive is the cars are still pretty close even with Audi running their 2013 car. But they are down to "490hp" remember. :lol: Both cars in the 1:43's on a not so fully dry/rubbered track is already two seconds better than last year in practice 2. 1:43.2 from Audi compared to 1:45.8 (1:45.7 P1) for the E-Tron. Toyota has gained more as well. Last year in FP1 was a 1:46.0 compared to a 1:43.8 in FP2 this year. So 2.5 second improvement for Audi and a 2.8 second improvement for Toyota.
