The Nazgull Cometh!

Welcome one and all to race 14 of the Weekly Endurance Series!
This is a re-vamp of a classic WRS race that I remember doing what seems like eons ago.
I enjoyed it then, and I hope you enjoy it now. I also hope that it will bring in some more drivers that like to specialise at the ‘Green Hell’, or only like to drive race cars.
When we visited here in race one, it was in a road car, on sports tyres.
This time it is a whole different kettle of fish, with a car that loves to corner and sticks like glue to the track.
(That is until you overstep the limits, and then it bites your head off! )
We will be driving one of the best of the middle-weight race cars, on race tyres, and with absolutely NO modifications to the car specs what-so-ever
( NOTE: not even the top-speed setting is to be changed )
This will also be a two week event, because 1: It’s the Ring, 2: It’s 10 laps of the ring, and 3: So I might have the time to actually race this one.

Settings!

Weight: 0% @ 1080kg
Top Speed : 340

Rear Tyres : MEDIUMS ONLY
You will now be set up for the race, there is no qualifying to do, just the race!

DEADLINE :
numberoneaq1bvm2.gif

Midnight GMT SUNDAY night, MARCH 23rd

RULES:

You must use the settings laid out above at all times.
You must try to keep 2 wheels on the track at all times.
An occasional off is to be expected, but use your judgement and morals to decide if you have gained from it or not. If you have gained, or feel that you have taken an advantage from the off, then please bin the race and re-start.
A.I. contact is allowed, but NO penalties are allowed.
Slight bumps into walls/barriers that DO NOT pull a penalty are allowed.
All podium times will be verified by the posting of either a replay or a photo of the screen showing your final time AFTER the deadline is past.
Any suspicious times will be investigated by either myself or where appropriate an NTSC user of my choice.
All decisions of the Administrator (me) are final, any cheating of any kind what so ever, will be dealt with in the appropriate manor.
You may discuss any splits or individual lap times, just not your final times.

Times should be sent to myself (Tyre King) via PM by the above deadline, as marked by the GTPlanet PM system time stamp.
Replays and screen shots should be posted in this thread after that time has passed, if asked for by myself or just if you want to.

Time sending format:

Congrats to all who competed in this race. Especially to VEXD, ICallShotgun and Delfino for the podium times.

Well done all!

ABT AUDI TT-R .. fine choice on a track its built for {in the GT world}

Can't wait to get to the ' Northern Loop Green Hell ' .. this time it will be much more fun .

Hmmm, one of the only combos i got a vid hosted online for....:trouble:

Now if i could just gain some intelligence, so i could beat that crafty Del and his superior tyre choice/pit strategies.... cackle cackle.....:sly:

This will also give me great practice at a track that im actually taking my avatar round in less than 2 months time:)(ohmygodimsoexcited) so i thank you Neil.

Hopefully, with the settings not being changeable, and the tyres set to medium, it should be all down to laptimes and tyre use, and i know what to do with respect to those factors.

Race on!

:irked:👍

Hope youve got track insurance VEXD :nervous: .. let me know how many GTI's pass you :)

Theres no tyre/pit strategy this time , the format should make for some very close racing .. AND .. encourage more to join the series 👍

DELS AVATAR {for those that may be interested}

The Aussie Racing Car combines current racing technology and performance in a one-design class where all cars are mechanically identical with strict rules in place to maintain that position. 4 different body styles cater to the liking of all tastes. Classic Ford and Holden body style for the nostalgia buffs and Falcon and Commodore body styles which replicate the V8 Supercars…. and all in approximately half size The drivers skill level is the determining factor for winning contention in Aussie Racing competition.

Cars are constructed on a purpose built steel tubular space frame chassis with integral roll cage construction designed and approved to stringent engineering specifications. The lightweight composite body is a faithfully designed caricature of its full size counterpart featuring opening doors, boot and lift off front section. Powered by a 1.2 litre 125 BHP twin cam 16 valve engine that revs to 11500 RPM. the performance is exhilarating. The 450 kg all up weight provides an incredible power to weight ratio that allows the little machine to rocket to a speed of well in excess of 200KPH The Lap times achieved are staggering, at Oran Park for example the cars lap within 6 seconds of a V8 Supercar.

They feature fully adjustable suspension geometry, huge brakes and controlled competition tyres that produce extremely high grip levels. The drivers experience behind the wheel is akin to the thrill and excitement normally only experienced by V8 Supercar or Formula Car racing drivers. All cars are hand built in the Aussie Racing Car facility and supplied ready to race.

The cockpit layout is purpose built and functional. The racing seat and five point racing harness holds the driver firmly and comfortably in place as the incredible cornering g-forces rocket the car off the corners. The steering is light, fast and precise with only one turn lock to lock and requiring minimal steering movement during racing. The sequential gear lever falls easily to hand up close to the steering wheel and the carbon fibre dash displays the necessary instrumentation. The chassis design incorporates simplicity in suspension adjustment to cater for all drivers likings including castor/camber, sway bar, roll centre and ride height etc. brakes have simple front to rear bias adjustment.

Do i have track insurance?

There's actually a section in my ELEPHANT insurance policy that states: "you will not drive on any track, circuit or event stage including Nurburgring Nordschleife" specifically banning me from being insured on that stretch of road.

Its virtually impossible nowadays (without spending more than twice the cost of the car) to get insurance for the ring, and if you do get it, then youre not likely to get any money if you crash there anyway!

Its a given that im not going to be covered in my Honda, but i feel i know the track well enough to definitely know where its going next, even if i dont know where all the bumps are or latest accident sites.
This i feel, gives me some advantage over a lot of noobs at the 'ring, and also the confidence to run it without insurance.
Gti's passing me? i drive a Honda mate... :D

At the end of the day Del, i want the sticker on my Honda, that says ive been there and done that, and there's only one way to earn that adhesive splendour. :sly:

Besides, she's good to go, stripped out, strut braced, mildly tuned(about 140 BHP + less than 900Kgs), and has a fully adjustable suspension setup that im experienced in tweaking, so i think i'll get round once, and that's all im interested in.
Woohoo, roll on May!

In the meantime, this race will keep me busy for a bit.

Lets see what we got.

Good luck

:irked:👍

Very nice description of what should and probably would be a very close and interesting series! 👍

But I have one question?:trouble:

Do all the body/chassis designs make the cars look like 1960's bubble cars going fast?

Or is it just, that the perspective of your 'tar is screwed up?
(No, it's me that's screwed up, I only just spotted the 1/2 size bit in the description! :dunce: )

Just kidding mate! Honestly!
Sounds like a blast to watch, and probably to participate in.

My right knee has just 'popped' on me, I can barely move it let alone put weight on it, and forget about walking.
And the pain-killers are wicked strong!!!!:dopey::crazy::dopey::):):)

Neil

Hahahaha! This week keeps getting better and better. Though I would have personally loved to had one of the Group C cars to race here for this race, I don't mind the Audi Either. This car and track combination is just begging for me to come on over so I'll do it! 👍

P.S.: Neil, Might I suggest for the next race, a challenging course where a Group C car is used? I'm kind of in the mood to get back behind the wheel of one of those cars and throw down some flyers, WES style! :trouble:

I remember a post Neil made explaning why he has a bad knee .. my thoughts are with you M8 .. take it easy for a few days , your body and mind need a rest . But dont mix those pain killers with the Guiness ..:yuck:

I ran two laps of this last night, and had orange tyres by the middle of lap 2!

Loox like i'll have to work on conserving those boots.

It was something like 6'36 for lap one, with loads of mistakes, and a couple of seconds quicker for lap two, with even more mistakes, so no accurate lap times as of yet.

I can see my problem though.
The Audi lets me push it soooo hard round this course, and i know how to push her, but then she lets go all of a sudden in certain places (usually under braking) and i go have a chat with the armco.
It will inspire me to submit this week, thats for sure, unless i run out of time. It all depends on the women in my life i spose.

What are you getting Del?

:irked:👍

Nothing yet havent had time , though im heading for the PS2 now .

Two laps on a set of feet is all anyone is gonna get here, yes even you Neil:) Man that Audi has an enormous amount of torque between 6000 and 7000 RPM's. Not real happy with the brakes at high speeds, under 100MPH they're suitable but at faster speeds they're a bit weak, also a bit of understeer at higher speeds. I'm sure glad you didn't have us run at +20 and -10 Neil, that would have been quite hairy. With a week extension in SGT I can concentrate on this race...thanks Chris:) Nice car and course choice dad!

Hey!

You guys have noticed that the tyre-wear setting is MILD! Haven't you?

I just did 3 laps and only got to yellows, before losing concentration and killing myself at a very high speed.

Just checking!

Neil

Yep VEXD and DREW were definately running with strong tyre wear . I think there is something wrong with your version of GT4 NEIL {which probably explains why your the 'Tyre King'} .. '3 laps and only got to yellows' .. my AUDI has yellows after 2 laps , so i figure you have a faulty disc = explains it all ; lets hope your GT5 is just a normal copy !:indiff::sick::grumpy::yuck:

ps : DEL ran 4 laps last night , fastest lap was around 3 seconds slower than you VEXD , which doesn't worry me ; love the NURB even though i don't get the best results .

I think my copy of GT4 is sloooowww .... :D

Neil's new nickname = The Tyreminator .... because he owns the tyres. :scared:

ERacer

Ha Ha! Good one!

Gotta go try to play league pool, with the gammy knee. But.......

I'll be back!

Neil

I was on MILD tyre wear :scared:

Hmmmm...... I'll have another go then, maybe i was just pushing too hard...

Back in a bit with results...

:irked:👍

I'm gonna have a hard time driving for awhile, my brake foot has a big gash in it, gonna go get a tetnus shot tomorrow. I was riding a 1000cc crotch rocket doing about 85 MPH when....no wait I was on a skateboard mounted with a weed whacker engine doing about 2 MPH, hit the throttle, my flip flop flew off and I somehow gashed my foot on the engine. Definately operater error, but the first story sounds better doesn't it?

Dunno Drew, you never finished it...?

Anyway, i've just done my race.

It took 20 odd laps in the end, not your quoted "10" Neil, because you failed to warn me that i might fall off on lap 6, and have to start again. :ouch:

This proved to be a theme, with me getting a fastest lap in the bag, then relaxing, and failing to have enough angst coming into angstkurve, to actually stay on the track. :yuck:

ANYWAY, i got there in the end, and im happy-ish with the results.

Here's what i learned today... :D

Firstly, i can pass all the AI before Schweudenkreuz, and get into a rythm fairly quickly... tonights exploits netted a first lap laptime of 6'30.1xx 👍
The car stix very well, and is fairly predictable, except for round wehrseifen, or more specifically, the chicane just before it, where i bounced into the armco a few times to begin with. :grumpy:
I have discovered that trying to push hard in this car at this time of night means that i crash, usually well into the race, as stated above.
I can also confirm that i am wearing out a set of Racing Mediums on MILD tyre wear, in 2 laps dead.
This means, frustratingly, that i get an outlap, and one furious lap, which ends in a pitstop, that has an outlap following it, then one furious lap, with a pitstop at the end, then an outlap..... err... is anyone following me here?

Therefore, there are two ways to bag a fastest laptime: either do a very very good outlap(which would be your best time), or do a very slow one, and then a fastest lap, and then crawl round on red tyres for another tour. :banghead:

So, what to do?

Well i leave that one up to you guys to let me know, as ive just done the best i can, and thought about it, but cant be arsed/havent the time to weigh up which one will yield a fastest overall time in the end.

So, ive been pitting every two laps, and i forgot to fuel up once, which meant re-starting again :yuck: you have been warned, the cars need some liquid or other to go round.....👍

Either way, im done, and i doubt i'll go have another go, though i just may be enticed, depending on what i read in here.

My fastest lap time is under 6'30. so show me what you got you lot.

Good luck all, lets have it....

:irked:👍

Man im tired, all i can see is green trees...

Well, another sleepless night with Grace has given me time to run this race tonight.
Decided to turn up the turbo, and hit a slightly faster pace that wore out the fronts in 2.9 laps at the beginning, then push through with some quickies towards the end with lower fuel load.

Ran a 3-3-2-2 strategy, with fuel added at lap 6 pit-stop. Ended the race on fumes, and hit my fastest lap on the last lap (as you would expect)

6'52 first lap
7'03 first in lap (L3(made a slight mistake))
6'40 out lap
forgot to write down next in lap
6'41 out lap
6'56 in lap (L8)
6'37 out lap

Sub 6'30 final lap!

not sayin what my in-between fast lap were. Gotta keep some of the mystery there.

By the end of the race my eyes were burning, mainly cos it was 4.30 am at the time.
But fairly happy with it, especially as I am not a 'Ring wraith' per-se, but just really enjoy driving the track for the challenge.

So, how well do I compare David, anyone else that's done a full race?
I will be running this again, as I think I can improve the fuel strategy at the end of the race.

Neil

Your in-laps look about right, but your first lap is 22 seconds behind me, so i'd work on that, but then you have a different tyre strategy to me, as ive been wearing them out in 2, and you've been making them last 3,
Tyreminator. <-im ducking here, not bowing.:sly:

If you got a sub 6'30 lap then you're quick enough i'd say, but it depends what you think everyone else is capable of!

I wasnt around for race 1, so i dont know how well these guys perform on the ring. :odd:

On average, you're a few seconds behind me Neil.

But youre doing more track time than me, as i sit in the pits drinking sprite while they change my tyres, a lot more often, so it could all be working for you, i have no idea.

Good luck anyway, the results will be interesting.
There's another week to go on this yet!

:irked:👍
Im off to change me sig....

Have a look HERE

The results for total time and fastest lap times are in post #2.
Judge for yourself! As I have said, I am no 'Ring wraith' but I can hold my own (so to speak)

Finally found time to get 10 laps in last night , tried a 2,2,3,3 combo {lap 7 was torture} Dels times are similar to the Kings .. not happy with it , fuel strategy is not an issue , tyre strategy is , will be trying again .

The TT certainly has more potential than you think , especially on the opening lap , though over doing it will cook your tyres , which is why your 1st pit stop should be on lap 2 .

HMmmm!
Maybe a 2-3-3-2 would work?
It would allow the faster 1st lap, without compromising the 3rd..............worth thunking about.

Neil

2-3-3-2 .. you read my mind NEIL .. can't wait for L10 .

Ive got a funny feeling im going to be made to look silly this weekend!

Good luck guys.

:irked:👍

Times submitted ran a 2,3,3,2 combo .. about 30 seconds faster than my 1st attempt , sort of happy with the result , wanted to run it again but ran out of time .

Good luck all ... have a feeling that the KING will crawl to the top step of the podium this week .

3 laps on medium fronts! how did you do that! mine were full red coming into the last corners. Barely made it into the pits a couple times. Wow.

I feel the same - how do you do that? Mine are falling off end of 3. It's 2 laps and then a pit stop for me. I like this combo a lot and really never before realised just how good the Audi is. 👍

Oh - Happy Easter, everybody!

3 laps on mediums ? easy :) .. back of maybe 5% with the throttle coming out of the corners , brake earlier than normal and smoother ; compromise your 1st lap {i think mine was at least 7 seconds slower than what it would have been} 2nd lap : drive at 9/10ths and of course do the same for the 3rd lap as you did in the 1st , though the last 6 corners {including those before the long stretch {whatever its called} have to be taken with 'much care' .. i'm sure NEIL approaches it in a similar way .
