OK, I know this might be a tough question to answer, especially when you're limited to picking 1 reason, but let's see what we can come up with.

I love the series now, so it's pretty hard for me to find the one, but I think I just found it tonight.

My wife and myself have been drinking and my son wanted to play on the "racing car game". (he's 2 and a half, so he doesn't know the name... YET; but he was referring to gran turismo prologue).

He can't reach the pedals on the playseat so my wife said, "i'll help you."

Poor kid.

She basically told him to buzz off as she got so into the racing. I had to lure her back to our bar with a sexy looking malibu bay breeze (little umbrella and all) before my poor kid was able to finally get back in the seat.

Well, that was enough to get me to my reason: wife likes it, i'm good :)

It's such an awesome game that a complete non-gamer such as my wife was able to take the helm and be swept away by its realism and beauty. she was like, "when the hell's the real one coming out?"

if i only had an answer ...

EDIT:

I'll grow the list from this post, so I don't look like a post-hog, unless a Mod's ok with it. anyways, here's what we've got so far:

1- wife approved (or as flourescentBlak mentioned): non gamer approved
2- scope
3- museum
4- physics
5- variety

NOTE: this list is NOT in a priority-based order, but rather the order i'm reading them in this thread. maybe if i can add a poll in the future, it'll be more representative of our community.

its definitely the shear scope of the game. (i know, i cheated). i just love the realism, the variety, the quantity, and just what we can do with all the great content we have.

Thats a pretty good reason. "Non gamer approved". 1 reason is really hard to pick and yours is as good as any but if I were to pick a different one it would be...

...I think what Kaz intends on it being. It's a car museum of sorts. I like that I can kind of test drive cars and also having accurate information on their specs and stuff. I guess it was GT 2 or 4 where you could read a few pages on the history of a car or manufacturer via that info icon from the garage. I enjoyed that trivia.

To expand on that you are pretty free as well. I don't like having to do things in a specific order or having very few options.

I would go with the ability to teach people about car's that many have never even heard of. I'll encyclopediality lol.

If you are going to do a poll do it after we have pretty much covered everything.

Feels almost like a word game. heh "scope".

seeing some nice perspectives. good idea flourescentBlak. if the thread carries forward enough, i'll incorporate a poll after we've pretty much exhausted all original contributions.

I say "Spirit". Gran Turismo is the only racing/driving game to capture the true spirit of automobile enthusiasm. It's a game that captures many, many aspects of the different car cultures around the world. It's this enthusiasm that drives them to give 100% on the different aspects of the game whether it's pushing the graphical limits of the system or anything else we could say positively about GT. Even though it is a business that often dampens efforts made by companies due to the power of the almighty dollar, PD has really shown it's unique position in being able to push to complete the game that they want to put out.

I'll add difficulty. Many games are way too easy. Like trying to get gold on all lisences. It's hard enough you can pat yourself on the back after you do it. The only other game I know that has the difficulty of GT5 is the Armored Core series when trying to S rank hard mode.

1. It's random assortment of every single type of racing genre nearly everyone can get into. People that have a huge love of automotive history can enjoy, that's exactly what kaz wanted to put into the game, was his love for automobiles, and alot of us share that exact same passion, the ones that understand every single delay and appreciate every one of them.

2. It's music, It's very nice to listen too, I can let menu music loop forever, catch myself humming it in the kitchen sometimes even when I'm not on it.

3. It's attention to detail, with physics and visually. I mean all of my non gamer friends have seen most of the trailers, I brag about GT 5 everytime they come over whether they want to hear about it or not, and even they are in Awe in the sheer awesomeness that is gran turismo. They say things like "woah that game has 1000 and all those tracks and it looks that good? how did they do that?" "Oh my... wow... at first I thought that was a photo" "Wow, real working headlights and windshield wipers?"

The fact that GT 5 when looked at by a real open heart and mind can awe anyone that's not trying to be a fanboy. It really does deliver a lot of things, even things some people don't care about, and a lot of those things are what makes gran turismo special.

Edit : When people can't see why GT is different than forza, they obviously don't see things like the VW bus, and the Kübelwagen and things like the midget, and the schwimmwagen, and a lot of the cars from the 40s - 90s as well as all the supercars, GT isn't just about speed, its about the experience, and from GT 1 - 4/GT5P I have had quite a good memories that I can honestly say has been life changing and broadened a lot of my already large aspect on how I see cars. I can't wait to play GT 5 for another huge lump of memories :)

Thanks for making this thread, I was going to make one really similar and how it affected your life. but I didn't have 100 posts yet.

Anyways that is all. =) may many more Gran turismo's come, and let gran turismo get even better by we the people who help it get to where it is today!

That commercial pretty much sums it up for me.

This

I've never seen other game so passionate about what the game is about.

Need for speed and other titles attempting the racing sim genre are far away from achieving this

I can't name 1. Basically, awesome physics, incredible attention to detail, unbelievable amount of machines with the freedom to modify and race any of them in almost any way you want. I mean seriously. What other game allows you to go from driving a Toyota 2000GT to driving an insane Vector M12 on some of the greatest original and real tracks ever made ina racing game.

Agreed 100 trillion percent!!! PD and especially KZ are sooo passionate about cars and that really shows through their work. It really makes the game so much more better than other titles

GT is very good at what they do. Granted they are missing some features, but as a total package, you can't deny that this franchise is one of the few game developers that produce top quality material.

As an experienced (not expert) sim racer, other PC racing sims do better jobs with customizing setups and having very good physics. However, video games should be fun as well. I think Forza does a great job at that, but GT goes even further by pushing the hardware of the Playstation to the limit.

PCs are going to be able to produce better graphics than consoles, but the guys at GT know how to match it using limited resources. It's not like I can wait til a graphics card becomes cheaper.

The interfaces and the menus are much more attractive than other games. I really did like the crazy jazz music in GT3.

I have to say they're the only Japanese developer willing to create something good for all people instead of focusing on what was good 10 years ago.

Again, it may miss some features, but it is really well package game.

Freedom of choice.

By that I mean that the number of cars available is so large, that there are tons of ways to reach your target. Except for the events that prescribe what car to use, it is totally up to you. The sim doesn't try to push you in a fixed direction where you are bound to choose that 1 one car if you want a chance top succeed on an event.

Though some cars are better than others, I managed to play through GT5P almost entirely using Italian cars with the exception of 2 or three S class events where I just wasn't good enough to pull it off. Yes it was me, because I saw YouTube footage of people on pro succeeding later S events with a Ferrari. And off course I could've made my life easier, but the choice was there 👍

This may sound cheesy, but it's love. KY's love for cars and motorsport have driven everything in this series, from what he wants in the game, to who he finds to help him make it. The entire staff have the same passion he does, and that's why the franchise is as successful as it is. It's not just a company finding what people will buy, or filling a hole in a segment where money can be made. They do what they love, and stick to it. Love.
