What 1 thing makes Gran Turismo as great as it is

man ... this is awesome ... so many awesome reasons. i think incorporating a poll won't work too well because there's going to be close to 100 choices at this point :)

of course there's some repeats, worded differently at times, so what I'll try to work on tomorrow is making as few, different choices as possible. kinda busy today so can't get to it today.

The feeling when you swing out wide, dive into the corner, outbrake the 1st place car, hit the gas and edge out in front of the pack, then cross the finish line.:)

To me that "feeling" is what make Gran Turismo great.

OK, I know this might be a tough question to answer, especially when you're limited to picking 1 reason, but let's see what we can come up with.

I love the series now, so it's pretty hard for me to find the one, but I think I just found it tonight.

My wife and myself have been drinking and my son wanted to play on the "racing car game". (he's 2 and a half, so he doesn't know the name... YET; but he was referring to gran turismo prologue).

He can't reach the pedals on the playseat so my wife said, "i'll help you."

Poor kid.

She basically told him to buzz off as she got so into the racing. I had to lure her back to our bar with a sexy looking malibu bay breeze (little umbrella and all) before my poor kid was able to finally get back in the seat.

Well, that was enough to get me to my reason: wife likes it, i'm good :)

It's such an awesome game that a complete non-gamer such as my wife was able to take the helm and be swept away by its realism and beauty. she was like, "when the hell's the real one coming out?"

if i only had an answer ...

EDIT:

I'll grow the list from this post, so I don't look like a post-hog, unless a Mod's ok with it. anyways, here's what we've got so far:

1- wife approved (or as flourescentBlak mentioned): non gamer approved
2- scope
3- museum
4- physics
5- variety

NOTE: this list is NOT in a priority-based order, but rather the order i'm reading them in this thread. maybe if i can add a poll in the future, it'll be more representative of our community.

Reminds me of my thread, its basically same thread but yours is just 1 reason, my can be from 1 to infinity

But to answer, its the Physics

It pars with PC sims.

it taught me not only to drive a car, but to race the hell out of it. what im saying is it taught me stuff that i can use in real life.

LOL Gran Turismo has taught me alot about cars and Racing , Gran Turismo 4 Prologue taught me what how to drive properly

It's difficult for me to quantify what exactly makes a GT game as great as they have been. They tend to have a certain something that other driving games I've played lacked. Other games may have better physics, graphics, features, and whatnot--but they don't keep me coming back to them quite like a GT game has. The only other racers that has come close to occupying my driving time are GTR2 and NFS:U2--and the GT experience isn't really much like either.

simply put......Graphics. Graphics and gameplay are the most important thing in any game in my opinion. Think about it.....if GT5 had those cartoonish graphics like most racing games, it would not be as impressive.

The way how the makers of the game seem to create a game that so many people like for different aspects. Take me for example: 1. I am a car lover, 2. I love to take photo's of (race) cars, 3. I like watching races at a circuit and on TV. Etc. Etc.

I like how that it is like a "RPG" of racing games. Starting weak in low-powered cars, winning races and getting money (which is like battling and gaining experience), then upgrading by buying better parts. Unlocking tougher championships, buying better cars, so on and so forth.

The way you get totally lost in the experience. It's immersive in a way that very games are, especially ones with no storyline!

The Awesome Driving Physics ... Best in Class!
The Graphics!
and
The amount of Cars/Automobile with that philosophy of keeping them stock.
The Jazz music!

All that in a Very refined environment!

Incredible jazz tunes
the attention to detail how the car reacts,
the visual representation
the aural representation
the plethora of cars, obscure to famous and in between
simple look, but deep
No one thing really, just a huge amount of little things that make this game what it is. No other game thus far can touch it on all points, I like it to remain how it is, being it's own pathfinder. Everyone else is just following in it's tracks.

To me, the best thing is the car selection. It's like a virtual auto museum in which you have unlimited access to the exhibits. And I'm not just talking about race cars either... I enjoy having all the models at my fingertips. It's pretty sweet that one can take out a car that their neighbor/in-laws/friend/coworker has in real life.

Each building block that makes up a Gran Turismo game impresses me to a degree...
Honestly, I still play Gran Turismo 1 and 2 on my Playstation 3..

Gameplay
Game Modes Available
Physics
AI
Graphics
Track Design
Car Models
Special Effects (Dirt, Dust)
GUI Design
Music
Menu BGM
Licensed Music
Sound Effects (decent enough)

I think I forgot to list some things down, but the GT games definitely evoke a sense of excitement, even while driving slow cars. It's the game's atmosphere, authentic driving.. and the car buying and tuning experience.

Passion.

And it just feels right. In a way other games just don't. It's a similar feeling I had with the original Sega Rally.

Peace

haha very true!

Also, it was the first game to feature actual road cars, like civics and E-class...It's obviously a good way for ppl to relate to the game by driving their own car in a videogame, on a famous race track and so on... and the license tests is a genius concept!

so i tried editing my main post, but apparently i either don't have the privileges to add a poll at this point or i just don't have the ability to do it at all.

well, this thread (at least for me) has still been a good read. some reasons are subjective and reminiscent of the first time (i suppose we were all gran turismo virgins once upon a time). others are very objective, and in essence, undeniable truths.

perhaps my proudest achievement from this thread is that there's been no arguing :)

release date come forth and let the good times keep on rolling.

I truly believe, it is "passion". I'm not saying it isn't about the money, etc. But, I really believe that Kaz and his team display a passion for what they do.

Sometimes, not everyone (or hardly anyone) is going to agree with the decisions. But in the end, there is a lot of passion for making games about cars. And I think it shows.

Plus, he has free rein over his game. And for better or worse, that shows too.

Physics have always been better on PC sims than on previous GT games but the physics in GT was good enough that, on top of the sheer scope and content of the game, nothing could match it.

That and the design team are actually working on a game they truly love and are knowledgeable about(now more than ever). I don't feel bad at all spending 100 dollars on GT5 because I know the guys making the game aren't just in it for the cash.

I've tried a lot of driving/racing games, but I keep coming back to Gran Turismo because the individual and varied sensations of driving different cars in GT felt *somehow* connected to a certain reality of how they drove in real life.

The BMW M3 can easily spin out the rear when accelerating on the turn out of a corner in GT, and so it does also in real life....etc.

So my answer would be the sensation of driving.

As I don't think GT has the better tracks or cars anymore. The game has passion. You can feel the passion put into it by the designers as a game like Forza, although it has far better cars and tracks, feels like just a game made to make money. GT never fails to put the spice into every detail to make it as accurate and emotional as possible.
