Can you ask the insurance company whether you should file a claim? Sounds an awful lot like insurance fraud.

I intend to if the other guy files a claim... he hasn't quite yet.

If he does, then I intend to find out what happens to my rates if I file. The answer may be "nothing because there is already a claim on this accident so the more the merrier". If that's the answer then I save 400 bucks. If the guy doesn't claim then I save in insurance so I'll just fix it myself. If the guy does claim and it does hurt my insurance to claim then... well... I'll have to think about that. I probably wouldn't file in that case.

Either way I'm a lot less worried about this because the price of this little booboo is has come down a bit.

I've been using progressive online to try to get a feel for what happens to my rates given different scenarios. It's pretty interesting.

The car is purchased!!!

I bought a certified per-owned '03 Acura RSX-S with 32k miles for $21k (after tax, title and license). That apparently is a $19,333 price on the car, just a little under what edmunds.com says its worth.

5 years later, The car is SOLD!!!

Sold the car private-party with 74k mi on the odometer for $9000 (almost exactly what edmunds says it's worth). Final purchase price is $21k-$9k=$12k (doesn't include maintenance, gas, tires, etc.)

Price per year = $2.2k
Price per month = $181
Price per mile = 28 cents

Total depreciation of the car's value is probably more like $9k. I spent $2k upfront in taxes, and another $1k on the warranty.

I think that worked out pretty nicely. I loved that car, was pretty sad to see it go - but it was time. Thanks for helping me pick it out guys.
