Sadly, a childhood friend of mine was killed in a car accident last Thursday at only 19 years old. She was driving the Porsche below when she lost control and rolled several times. Being the car guy that I am, I was curious to know what type of Porsche she was driving, but of course no one with more information about the accident knew exactly (the car wasn't hers) and I have only one picture of the accident. Can any of you identify it? At first I assumed it was a pre-'06 Boxster, but upon closer inspection I can see what I think was a roofline. However, I seriously doubt it was a Cayman.

Regardless, this should be a reminder to us all to drive safely. May she rest in peace.

Sad to hear about your loss, but judging by the side-impact airbags and the interior, I think it might be a 2000ish 911 coupe.

Thats the only thing I could think of at the moment, hope everything is sorted out with the other family and everything is all right.

O, man sorry to here Jordan. Lucky for me, I don't drive! But that's probabally for the best. ;)
To me that looks like a hartop boxter. But I really don't know if they sold them in the US. But I'm pretty sure they do.
EDIT: DAMN YOU OPENDRIVER! I got in here first! DELETE THAT POST AT ONCE! :D

 That was a car? Crikey.

Could it have been a Boxster with a hardtop? Like this.

Edit: Okay, what Master_Yoda said, which I didn't read properly.

That one's on eBay from a German shop, so presumably you could get one in the US if you really wanted too.

it looks like a hardtop boxster to me. i have seen lots of news of high speed crashes here in my city, but none of them never looked this bad. like what Jordan said, this is a reminder. don't be a careless driver no matter what car you're in

Wouldn't the be a huge flat 6 sticking out the back if it was a 911 ?... I'm mostly leaning toward the Boxster as I really can't find a roof line...

Sorry to hear about your loss Jordan !....

Sorry to hear this Jordan, 19 is just far too young for anyone.

As far as the car goes it is difficult to tell from the single shot and the level of damage, it does however seem to be a 911 coupe.

I'm guessing at this as you can clearly see the visable door mounted speaker, which the Boxster (IIRC) does not have, the door handle shape also looks 'right' for a 996 generation car.

I know that the above will not help with the feelings one gets at I time like his, and my thoughts and those of my family are with you and the young ladies family.

Respectfully

Gideon

Given the very serious nature of the damage here one of the first things to break loose from the could well be the engine.

Agreed - But the diff is still on the car - on the 911, isn't the diff part of the gearbox / casing ?.. And in that case, not very likely to be disconnected from the engine under any circumstance...

The above IS a question - not a statement !...

I'm not too sure about that:

The speaker and door shape seem very similar to the one in the crash.

Sorry about the loss, Jordan. This kind of proves that even with the vastly growing standards of safety and body strengthening of modern cars today you cannot be completely safe from a crash like that. :(

It is indeed, but then again thats the case with a Boxster, but it is difficult to see in that shot due to the bumper.

I would also expect to be able to see the engine if it was a Boxster.

A clearer view of the rear suspension would be definative as the Boxster is fitted with McPherson struts at the rear while a 911 runs semi-trailing arms.

It does, which unfortunatly doesn't help as that almost identical to the door panels on a 911 (996), I honestly think the damage is too great to be 100% sure.

You can see it's a Boxster on the third brake light and the licence plate lights.
Sorry to hear about your loss. Do you know the speed?

Thanks !... But the engine being on the other side of the rear axle would minimize the risk of it being "torn off" as is the case with 911 engine...

Agreed - But I think it would take a lab tech a good 30 minutes with the remains up close to see what's what....

I'm sticking with my initial Boxster........

from the supplemental pictures posted I'd say it's a boxer. And there isn't a roofline there, it's the winshield pushed nearly flat. And Even if it had a hardtop, I seriously doubt it would have stayed on a the car in a crash with that kind of force.

Very sorry for the loss Jordan. A very harsh reminder to us all that anything can happen anywhere, no matter how hard we believe otherwise.

Curious to find out myself, I went into my bedroom and looked at some scale models - ironically, I have them of both vehicles. The bumper tells all, and I'm 100% sure it's a 996 911 for a few reasons:

1. The license plate lights are body-colored. On the Boxster, they're black - unless it's the newest model. You can see a shot of a 911 with body-colored license plate lights here.

2. The bumper clearly has two slots for the exhaust, just like the 911 in that photograph, and unlike the Boxster, which has just one slot at the center. You can see a shot of a Boxster with just one exhaust slot here (it's a large photo), and note the black license plate inserts.

So, to me, there's no question - 996 911.

EDIT: by the way, Jordan, I Googled the crash and I found a Cincinnati newspaper article which identified the vehicle as a 1999 Porsche. Since only two Porsches were being made in 1999 and the Boxster had those black license plate inserts, it has to be the 996 911.

Jordan, could I bother you (or someone) to re-host that image? Imageshack is very hit-or-miss for me, and it's not working this time.

Condolences. And, wow... after seeing numerous high speed exotic crashes where the driver walks away, you kind of forget how fragile cars really are if you push too far. :nervous:
