On Sunday afternoons the Cartoon Network plays all the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. I grew up on that stuff. I also grew up on Woody Woodpecker, Bugs Bunny, and Popeye. But Tom and Jerry take the cake in my book. It's weird to think how old they are; they were old when I watched them every single day. I especially liked the "variety" episodes that didn't have any of the regular characters, and were usually about "The Kitchen of the 21st Century" or "Cars of the Future". Great satirical humor. What did you watch growing up? If you're still growing up, what do you watch.

Who could ever forget "The Pink Panther" I'm waiting for the day they release those on DVD.

I was born in 1986, so I grew up loving Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles above all else. I also remember being a big fan of The Jetsons reruns.

Awesome topic Mile, here goes:

  • He-Man
  • Voltron
  • Robotech
  • G-I-Joe
  • Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • Transformers
  • Of course all the WB Classics

Those were the main ones off the top of my head, of course there were many many more, but it's a good start.

:)

I am still growing up(15), but the cartoons I watch are pretty much everything that has been listed. I espicially love the Kitchen of the 21st century as milefile mentioned. I would really love to download this once I get my computer back. Since my parents recently ordered the full package on DirecTV, I watch the Boomerang channel alot ;) One cartoon I find really funny is Penelope Pitstop. I also really love Speed Racer. That little boy and the monkey always hiding in the trunk of the car was great!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle of course! Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Ghostbusters. I used to watch a lot of Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, too.

I remember getting one of those Ghostbuster backpack thingies with all the gadgets for Christmas when I was like 4. "I've been waiting my whole life for this!"

Those Kitchens of the Future type shows were excellent as well.

Anybody watched Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers? Or what about that show with Scrooge and his three nephews? (The name has slipped my mind). Oh, and, Aladdin, Looney Toons, the Lion King...

I belive that show with Scrooge and his nephews was called DuckTales. ;) I also watched Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko's Modern Life.
Hefer: "That was a hoot!!"

I grew up on:
"The Atom",
Bugs Bunny,
Early Scooby Doo, (I emphasize Early Scooby cause the stuff with Scrappy-Doo, and the 13 Ghosts crap just sucks).
Batman,
Speed Racer,
Anybody remember "Kimba the white lion"?
How about the old claymation/puppet series "The Thunderbirds"?
Some of my old faves.

Great topic Milefile.

Any relation to the Gerry Anderson "Thunderbirds" for the 60's? Those little marionets were awesome. I've been watching this show on TechTV every afternoon for a while now.

Inspector Gadget
David the Nome
Tail Spin
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Ghostbusters
G.I. Joe

Anyone remember that MC Hammer cartoon?

Actually, that's exactly the one I mean.
I also enjoyed "H.R. Puffenstuf" and "The Banana Splits"

Heh, I used to have one of those too. My favorite though was my little ghost trap thing, I would go into my little brother's room (he must have been about 2 at the time) throw it in when he was sleeping, and yell "GOTCHA!" Good times.

Those "variety" episodes you talk about arent Tom & Jerry, they are actually a few of a series of almost 100 incredibly weird cartoons that Director Tex Avery made for MGM. this dude was plain amazing, and he created porky pig, daffy duck, Droopy, the character known as the wolf (yeah, the dude who always stalks ladies), and the screwy squirrel. his are all those "stuff of the future" ones. there is one about cars that is hillarious to hell. another is the animal of the future, the farm of the future, and all those things. he was an impressive genius, making cartoons wilder and crazier than... well, ever, EVEN to this very day, I havent seen a cartoon break the rules SO much AND being SO hillarious doing it. Tex Avery is often overlooked and doesnt have the recognition he deserves (unlike others not so worthy, like chuck jones, for example... he created many things, but he wasnt a good direvtor at all... and for all those who believe that he created bugs, well, surpirse, he stealed the idea off Avery) but I think that he is the greatest cartoon director of all time. wanna find out more abpout all those cool, crazy toons? log on to www.texavery.com to learn more on this wild director!!! the page is really good, believe me.

Heh.

Rugrats... I LOVED [notice the "d"] them they were so funny! I remember when Cable subscribers first got Disney... My sister was so excited to get the stupid Disney movies.. I love Nickalodian {sp?} and thats all! Nick rockED..at one time:)

👍

Definitely Tom and Jerry, i'm still a sucker for slapstick stuff and most Tom and Jerry cartoons will still raise a chuckle (even though I got to the point where I could predict what was going to happen, blame cartoon network for that). I could list a big list of cartoons I like but I'd be here for ages. Although the Racoons 0wnz0red me (see avatar).

Couldn't have said it better myself,... except you need to add Thundercats to the list ;)

THUNDERCATS!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!!!!!!!!!

Ren and Stimpy and Dexters Laboratory are hillarious, too. I even like Spongebob Squarepants. I hear people talk down on it but I don't see why. I think it's a good cartoon in the tradition of Ren and Stimpy. It makes me laugh.

Gil, man, with every post you make, the more I want to meet you. Damn straight I remember Kimba the White Lion. I grew up on:

Action shows
Kimba
Tobor the 8 Man
Ultraman (live action)
Johnny Quest
Clutch Cargo - anybody remember? It was mostly animated, but they filmed the voice actors' mouths as they read the lines, then animated the faces around them - wierd)
Thunderbirds
Captain Scarlet
Speed Racer
Star Blazers (a little later)

Comedy cartoons
Rocky & Bullwinkle
American Heroes (Diaperman, Tornadoman, Strong Man, and Rope Man)
Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Daffy and the rest of the Warner Bros gang
Pink Panther/Aardvark

I absolutely hated Tom & Jerry (still do in fact) because the mouse would always get the cat in trouble for no reason. The cat would be told to be quiet, so the mouse would run around with cymbals breaking all the china and vases. Then the mouse would disappear and the black housekeeper would come in and whop the daylights out of the cat with a broom. I don't care about the violence at all, but I think it's a crappy message to send: punishment is arbitrary, and you're going to get smacked for it even though you were trying to catch the vase, not break it. The sneak/bully mouse, on the other hand, goes totally unpunished because he lies and says the cat did it.

Great moral to that story. Really constructive.

[edit] Yeah, I have to put a vote in for Tex Avery as well. He was an amazing guy and I love all the fairy tale spoofs, and the ones about what happens in the store at night when all the people are gone; stuff like that.

And Gil sews up the nomination - The Banana Splits were absolutely the best! They always showed Lancelot Link - Secret Chimp episodes during the Banana Splits, and the Sour Grapes gang were hotties! [/edit]
