What causes jagged lines (stair effect) in games??

I play lost coast loads and havnt noticed any stair effect or any graphical glitches like that, and HDR is godly

I took all of the advice mentioned above and it worked. I set the Anti-Aliasing to x6 and it got rid of all of the jagged lines. 99%.
This screen shot is way better than my other one. Just look at the comparison to the first pic. The smoke tower is the most noticible difference. However I could never play set like this because my old PC cant handle it. When I get my new one it will have no problems at all. Thanks again for the help. 👍

Open up your Catalyst Control Center. Press on VIEW and make it ADVANCED. Go to 3D, and ANTI ALIASING. Set it to whatever your motherboard allows, its probably 4x/8x, since your card is a AGP. Then in the ingame settings set it to the same amount. Your game might start to run a bit slow, since your computer isnt up to par, so i would drop the resolution down to 1024x768. It should look alot better.

Higher resolutions also get rid of Jaggy lines, but not that much, so its better to turn AA on your fullest.
I could not find the Catylist control center. :dunce: Where is it?
My video card is ATI 9500.

I think you need a Catalyst driver to do so (I'm not sure, I run Nvidia) which can be found here.

Just click "XP drivers and software > RADEON > Catalyst 6.1 Windows XP - Driver Download" you want the "Catalyst Control Center Package."

And as a word of advice, if you really want to see Lost Coast, get a new graphics card.

i like the old cp better so i use that one instead. :P takes up less resources and its easier to navigate than the new one;)

As I have said in many other threads and even this thread (read post 33 again). I am having a brand new PC built with the best of everything. That way I can play anything out in the highest settings especially FEAR. :sly:
I already know my current PC is not good enough.

camaro, try and wait a few months before you drop big money on a videocard. at least thats what i'd reccomend :P i bought the x800gto just to hold me untill something really awsome comes out.

i know, but the x1900xt just came out. just wait untill the pissing contest gets a bit farther.
you dont have to wait if u have the money to burn :P

You are running stock drivers correct? That may explain why you do not have it. ATi just released Catalyst Control Center 6.1 , hopefully it can help you out. Lots of problems fixed in these new drivers, and better FPS.

The pissing contest will never end, if you keep waiting for a definitive victor in the graphics card world you will never upgrade.

BTW RobcioPL, if you refer to my earlier post you will see that I have already answered that question.

I wont get the new PC until my income taxes return. Probably wont be until late February or early March. Go to this thread to see my new PC specs. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=74752
This is the video card I was planning on getting. I want the best to run FEAR. Yet still affordable. XFX PVT70GUDE7 Geforce 7800GT

When you get a 7800GT are you going to unlock the extra pipelines for the card. While overclocking it.

I have no idea what you just said. :dunce: What does that mean? Is that a good thing or bad thing? I want my new PC to run any game on the highest settings.

The GT I think does not have the full amount of pipelines like the GTX. There are tools to unlock it, which would boost the speed.

But at a cost of extra heat, also if you overclock the clockspeed, just make sure you up the heatsink on the 7800GT.

The heatsink on the 7800GT contains a themometer, it automatically senses the temperature and adjusts its speed accordingly so no need to mess around with it.

If this helps you out... Anandtech.com's 7800GT mini round up says the cards that arn't factory overclocked are worth it a little more because you can over clock it yourself rather than suck at their overclocked speed. 👍

BTW, in FEAR I have everything on max and Soft shadows on although I can't tell a difference with it off. But there's not much slow down to me? I'll have some screen shot up soon. The water shot I got is  amazing.

I'm not quite sure why but in the game I can only go up to 1280x960 and it's all fed up. I just use 1024x768 and that's enough for me. Note: I'm using the DVI to VGA adaptor if that has anything to do with it. :grumpy:

I'm hesitant about overclocking and even more so on cpu overclocking. :scared:

Nice, that's great to hear. Don't have to worry about it then.
