I've just acquired a GT3 Logitech steering wheel, which supplements a Fanatec wheel I've been using.

Although not a big fan of the Logitech wheel, I love the driving experience with it. People using Dualshocks and non-force-feedback wheels really are missing out on a significant part of the game.

Feedback through the wheel aside, it's nice to have analogue throttle and brake pedals, and to finally be able to turn both the traction and stability controls off and actually drive the cars as they were meant to be driven, without electronic intervention. I found I was instantly a lot more precise with my car placement, able to sit on part throttle rather than just flooring it and letting the computer sort it out. Much more rewarding and realistic.

It is a bugger getting cars launched off the line, though, without traction control.

I'm not a big fan of the Logitech wheel, though, for the following reasons;
- the crappy little pedals. They're too small, too close together, and I hate chasing the friggen things around under my desk
- the bizarre shape of the rubber grips (the blue bits on the wheel) - what's the caper with the lumps just above where your thumbs sit?
- why does the wheel just decide to suddenly stop working, needing to re-plugged?
- although reasonably well constructed it isn't a patch on the Fanatec in terms of quality of materials

I'd be interested in comments from the community on the following points:
- what controllers people are using and how they're finding them to use
- comments from anyone who has changed controllers as I have. Were you quicker/slower (I've found around half a second straight away on the license tests)?
- what settings people use. I went straight to Simulation on the Options menu, but it had me intrigued what it was like with the other settings

when i played gt2 i used the d pad, but now in gt3 i use the sticks because of the precision i get out of it now.

Must be years of finger injuries from cricket, but I hate those fiddly little joysticks on the Dualshock!!!

I never ever liked using any d-pad in racing games. It's like comparing the gas pedals to the X button. There's no medium area. The sticks do really good for now, so I don't see myself getting the wheel. Would be a nice gift idea though.

I'm from the Logitech Wheel camp! I'd origanally played with the DSII and was a bit sceptical about getting the wheel (it added £60 to the price!) so I had a word with a friend who owned a computer should in my town and he let me try his:)
I tried Smokey mountain and was converted!

I eventually got my own wheel and after a little getting used to the controls (mainly correcting car orientation, I used to ovesteer quite a lot if the car went out of control)

Having used it now I find the pedals excellent as the have a bit more play then the DS buttons! The wheel is the same as it has a greater degree of movement.

As for the controllers I have found that having played all the courses with the wheel I know the braking points for each course, and I actually quite surprised aat how well I was doing with the DSII! I only really use the DSII if I'm round a friends house that I haven't got a place to set the wheel up, or have let my wheel @ home!

I have experienced the problems mentioned by vat_man that required the wheel to be re-plugged, but this is only occasionally, and finally the settings! I've never really changed the ASM and TCS on any car (I can only think of one that I halved the effect of the ASM,this is GT mode btw)

Hmmm...I've been using a DS since GT1, so the fiddly joysticks don't bother me...except for repetitive motion injury (as i've mentioned in other posts). My problem is that I tense up trying to maintain such fine movements...it can really screw up yer hands....mebbe I'll pony up the cash for a Logitech. It's only ~$30 and EB has a generous return policy. :p

Yeah, me too. I need to spring for the Logitech wheel...

OK, I am now officially warning people away from the new Logitech wheel: it's buggy! I just exchanged my "Driving Force" (update of the original GT Force) and the new wheel has exactly the same problems as the last one. The problems are: intermittent L3/R3 buttons (the shifter paddles) and a non-functional select button! I shall be returning it for a refund tomorrow. It's a real shame, because otherwise, it's great! I just refuse to pick up the slack for Logitech's QA department, especially if I have to pay $100 for the privilege!

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I feel it's necessary to let you guys know what's up.... :)

Must be a bad batch - the only problem I've had is the one where the wheel stops working - fixed by a quick pause through the DS2 in port 1, and uplug and replug the wheel.

Have you made inquiries with Logitech?

It's funny how they've had problems with the wheels- their mice and keyboards are fantastic.

Damn. All these problems DO concern me. But hell, I can always return it!

Maybe it's the northern hemisphere polarity buggering everything up!

I think there's another forcefeedback wheel out for PS2 now - I saw one of the local electronics chains selling them bundled with EA's 2001 F1 game. Might be worth investigating.

Yeah, can anyone report on this new one?

I just assumed the logitech would be the best since it was supposedly designed along with this game - or rather - adapted from the PC design to work well with this game in PS2.

See, I wouldn't put up with that intermittent working problem you're having...that's worse than my problem!

I have not e-mailed Logitech...I've checked their website, and it's no help. I should register a complaint, tho.

Yeah, I'm using one of their optical mice right now! I dunno why the wheels would be so trouble-prone....maybe because they're more complex...? It's a shame, I have yet to find a wheel for home use that I like. The last wheel I had was a Mad Catz (do avoid their products) and thing was defuctive as all hell. Not to mention more or less useless in a race.

Well, if you compare it to the performance of your PC (and from what I hear the first batch of the Xbox) it's actually not too bad.

I've spoken to a few contacts and the story with the wheel freezing (it actually 'sticks' in the position when communication between the PS2 and the wheel is lost) is apparently a software issue, not a hardware issue - the suggestion is because it's the first time those developers have worked with force feedback. Apparently the feedback was a relatively late addition to the game.

And as I say that IE6 crashes again!!!

Stupid thing it's better than IE5, but that's like saying Jason Gillespie's a better batsman than Glenn McGrath.

Hey, I'm suffering with Windows Me! (my fault tho :( )

Someone......please......kill...me...... :weird:

I just picked up the Logitech yesterday, and am having a pain of a time getting used to it. Years of intensive Dual Shock training have spoiled me, now I actually have to work at driving.;) We'll see how it works out...

I experienced the same problem with my thrustmaster force feedback wheel and here is an email I wrote to sony with my findings

***********************************
I am writing to you not for support but to inform you of a problem I have experienced and fixed that may be useful for your FAQ's or the like.

I recently bought both a PS2-PAL and a thrustmaster force feedback wheel (there were no logitec ones to be found anywhere) connected it all up and started playing both F1 and GT3.

The problem I experienced in both games was either disconnection of the wheel mid game or the wheel would turn hard right and accelerate full, hence me losing control. The only way I could get the wheel to work was to turn it off and back on again.
I first suspected the wheel and replaced it but the new one had exactly the same problem. So I took the wheel to a friends place and played it on his PS2 and all worked well until we turned his stereo on. The wheel disconnected immediately from the game and we lost control.
By testing various power configurations it would seem that since the PS2 was connected with various other devices (TV, Stereo, VCR, Wheel) via a powerboard to one power outlet, it was struggling to get enough power to the USB ports and hence we were experiencing sporadic problems with the wheel. Once we connected the PS2 to its own power point everything worked fine.

Just thought it would be helpful for others to know this.

Oh wow! It's a power issue!!!!! Of course!

Thanks Jadon - great work!

I'll go home and re-organise the powerpoint set up!

Just thought I would add that this reduced the problem but didnt seem to solve it completely. I am not sure about the power in my place but I know that when my fridge compresser kicks in I tend to lose control on the wheel.

So I am thinking that the power supply in the playstation/USB port is very very very sensitive to ANY sort of power disruptions.

I know that my wheel works better over a friends place than it does at my place. Maybe he has better/stronger power source?

Also there could be an inherint problem with the PS2/wheels as well as this power problem.

Who knows.. I have thought about taking the wheel back but for the odd occasion that it screws up, I simply think of it as mechanical failure during the race, sorta adding a new level of realism to the game that no one else has... :)

See - if you put your mind to it you can rationalise anything!

I've got the logitech steering wheel too. I am faster with the dual shock but. I use the two joysticks rather than buttons for gas/steering. The years of training are hard to match with a few weeks of use with the wheel. The wheel is more fun, but I don't have a comfortable setup to use it with. Ie good chair, have wheel at good height etc.

I also find that I get better brake/gas control with the wheel/pedal, but have trouble on corners that require a quick full turns. The friction off the wheel plus the large amount of movement is a bit disconcerting for me. Very different from moving that little stick full right or left.

I would like to know if anyone else who was experiencing this problem, has had better results by chnging the power configuration that they are running on.

Set up of the wheel's crucial - The PS2 and I share the world's biggest desk (you could land planes on this thing!) with my partner's sewing machine (be REALLY careful where you slam your fist), and I sit in a good quality office chair with the Logitech wheel bolted to the desk, set up in front of a dedicated TV. Accordingly I'm very comfortable, and have full leverage on the wheel - much like my road car!

I came from a steering wheel on the PS1 so I haven't had to make the jump - if it makes you feel better I'm a complete spaz with the DS2.

It is confirmed 100% that my fridge is responsible for the numerous crashes into walls and loss of control of my sterring wheel...

Hmmm now to decide...

cold beer while driving and hectic power fluctuations or
warm beer and less last corner of the race wall slams....

well the vote is in.... and it there was no real contest on this one...

COLD BEER!!!!!!!!!

COLD BEER!!!!!!!!!

Just buy an esky and some ice.

Alternatively you could drink ALL of your beer before playing.
