What do I need to connect my PS3 to the Internet?

As the proud owner of a brand new PlayStation 3, I'm really interested in connecting it to the internet to take advantage of what the PS Store has to offer (gotta try out GT:HD!)

What I would like is a step-by-step procedure of what I need (ideally in layman's terms) of how I set up my PS3. Assume that I only have what I've recieved with my 60GB PS3 but can purchase whatever is needed.

The documentation that came with the PS3 includes what I felt to be very easy to follow instructions on how to connect and set-up the PS3, including use with the internet.


That said, the easiest way to quickly connect to the internet is to simply plug the Ethernet cable from the PS3 to your modem. For greater convenience, if you have a wireless router, you can follow the directions on how to set-up your PS3 to the router. This will largely depend on the type of router you have and what kind of security controls that are in place.


If you are unsure of what kind of router you have, you may want to start looking there to figure out how to connect your PS3.

Yes, the manual has very nice picture drawings of where the various cords do and go. That may be simple enough for the power cords and audio/visual connections, but the Ethernet cable seems to mysteriously fade away and magically connects itself to the Internet. I must have a faulty one.

Maybe you misunderstood what I wanted. "Assume that I have nothing other than what was supplied with my PS3." That means to assume that I have no router, DSL connection, modem, computer, internet subscription, television...

I may have some or all of what is needed, but I would still like to have a step-by-step procedure of what I need to do. Now, maybe this is too simple for the technically-minded people who frequent these boards, but I'm feeling rather frustrated at the moment.

Maybe the problem is I don't know what proper settings I need on the PS3, the message I keep getting is that "The attempt to obtain an IP address timed out." I don't know if that means that I have it improperly connected or have to input a different address. :(

The problem is that without knowing exactly what you have or even what is available to you, it is going to be hard to walk you through the procedures, and frankly the instructions that come with the PS3 are likely going to do a better job.

This is the problem. To assist you properly we would have to know what you have, and then we can tell you what you are missing or might need.

That said, if you have internet access at home, or where ever your PS3 is, then you can connect the PS3 to it. If you really do not have any internet service, then that's your number one problem, for which there is no other solution than to get it if you want to go online with your PS3.

As mentioned before, with the PS3 you have two ways of connecting the PS3 to a modem; using a USB cable (one came with your PS3 - it looks like a bloated phone cable); or using the Wi-Fi adapter to connect wirelessly to a Wi-Fi modem/router.

If you have internet access at home, but do not know what you have, contact your internet service provider and see if they can help you identify what you have and probably even let you know how to connect your PS3.

Otherwise, considering the tremendous amount of variables when trying to not only guess what you may or may not have, but also guess what kind of settings and security control that is in place would make giving any advice an almost pointless endeavor.
 
*sighs* I'm just getting so frustrated with myself that I can just scream. Call me stupid, call me technically-illiterate. Fine. I just don't know much about computer programming and networking.

I have a computer, I have a subscription to an internet supplier, I have an old 56k dial-up modem (what I think might be the problem). I look on the back of my computer and see that there is only one port which the ethernet cable fits into. I plug it in.

I turn on my PS3 and select Setup: Network. I go through the various selections, usually selecting the default. Then I get to the end and test the connection. The PS3 states that it is checking the IP Address. Then it times out and says that it has failed.

I don't know where my problem is. Can the PS3 work with a dial-up modem? Have I plugged the cable into the wrong place? Do I have to change any settings on my computer? I don't know. :(

Starting from the beginning. I assume you are using Windows XP on a desktop computer connected to the internet by a dial-up modem? You also have a network adapter in this computer (connector looks like a phone jack only bigger - there's also one on the PS3)?

You'll need to use "Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing"

Cruise on down to "Set up a network with Internet Connection Sharing" and go from there.

But that will mean using a less-than-dialup connection on the PS3, which is designed to work with broadband. Its going to be very slow.



Here is what you need to do.

1. Purchase a broadband internet connection (DSL or cable are the mainstream ones).

2. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your router/gateway (which the Internet Service Provider should give you) to your PC and another for your PS3.

3. It should work just like that.

4. (if you'd prefer a wireless connection for the PS3) Most routers have antennae that provide a wireless internet signal. The PS3's manual can tell you what to do to use that signal on the PS3 instead of using the Ethernet cable.
 
u__u Alright, I figured it out now. I just needed to set my computer to allow for other computers to access it. I'm feeling kinda foolish now...

And yes, it really does take a long time to download anything from a dial-up connection so I'll have to consider finally upgrading my connection.
