What do the in-race icons mean?

Yes, it's a stupid question, but I can't find reference to them in the GT manual or online.

What do the icons at the bottom of the screen during a race mean? I get the lateral force indicator in the centre, but, for example, what does the indicator on the far left show? I realise it's tyre/wheel related.

Also, what do the lights around the gear number mean, Oil pressure in the centre?

Cheers

There is a manual with the Gran Turismo game itself. The bottom bar changes per view, but if you are in the inside view. You have one bar which is G-force bar, you see when turning, you have a part which shows tyre worn thing. If its blue, tyres are cold, red is warm and then they get worn out easily. If they're black you don't have any grip anymore. And the lights, one is oil, if that burns, you should change oil, and another one is for G-force as well. If you're turning full to the left for example, you see the light burning.

I can't give you more detailed things, since I'm not at home at the moment, but I hope I helped you out already.

The blue light is your high beam indicator. the triangle shows when your assists are kicking in the red number shows you that you need to slow down and possibily downshift.

The indicator in the far left is a Tire wear & temperature indicator.

Tire temperature change is indicated by a color change. Dark Blue is cold, which means it has reached maximum grip & no friction exists. Blue is warmer than cold, which means some grip has been used & little friction exists. White means a lot of friction exists & grip is minimum. Red means too much friction, therefore the tires will spawn with smoke, possibly spinning out. It then goes back to white. Tire temperature changes whenever the tires are being abused by the driver (ex: turning at a high speed while the tires are Comfort tires) or that a certain cornering process is too much to handle for the tires.

Tire wear is indicated by the insides of the 4 tires. Tire wear occurrences is quite rare, & mostly happens from the tires reaching at high temperatures, or when the colors turn red. The insides then decreases, indicating that tire wear occurred. Once it hits zero, the tires are fully worn out, & you have to switch your tires by going into a pitstop or reset the race/championship. If not, the tire's effort, grip, & friction resistance decreases considerably. Tire wear can be more resistant if you use hard version tires, which is more durable than medium & soft version tires, but it sacrifices grip.

The red number next to the speedometer is what is called a gearbox suggestion. Before you enter into a corner, a number will appear. This is a suggested gear. When it blinks quickly, that means you should brake now, downshifting to that gear. This assists beginners on corners.

The lights you are speaking of is probably indication of whether or not you are using high beam lights. Next to it is an oil indicator. It indicates when the oil does not match the performance of the car & that you have to change the oil by going into the GT Auto. I think it also indicates when your oil amount is low.

I think that's everything you have asked for.

The oil indicator in a real car would indicate that your oil pressure is dangerously low in GT it indicates that you are way past due for an oil change.

Is it just me or does nobody ever see the Oil Change light pop on in GT5? I must be too diligent in changing my oil.

It takes quite a lot of miles to activate the light in a car that's had an oil change. However; if you buy a car from the UCD and drive it immediately it's highly likely that the light will be on!

The oil light will always be on in a used car if you do not change the oil. Other than this no one should ever see the oil light as if they do then they have waited way to long to change the oil.

IRL if you see the oil light while driving there is a good chance you will soon be seeing a tow truck.

Good Lordy, then my fingers are crossed -- I'm in the 21st hour of LeMans (B-spec) and my oil pressure light has been on for about an hour or two. I had changed the oil immediately before the race (as I pretty much do for all the longer races). The car seems to be okay, though.

My guess is that I'm gonna have to do an engine rebuild after this race, as opposed to a simple oil change. If I can't finish the race this late in the game I very well may have to go crazy.

There's no breakdowns, so no need to care about the oil light, and also, no need to do an engine rebuild, it's not worth the money, ever. At least not on an expensive car.
