What do you do on a sick day?

I go to class anyway. I refuse to take sick days, no matter how sick I am, and no matter how early the class is. I'm paying a lot of money to be here.

I spend quite a bit of time on the computer, and maybe play a game or two. I'll try to go to class if it's not bad enough. Other than that, I try to get more sleep, but most of the time I can't because my body won't let me.

Actually that's a pretty bad idea... I used to work with a girl who would struggle in despite being clearly ill with some virus or other, and she was not popular when the rest of us came down with the same thing, ruining atleast a week's worth of work for the whole group rather than just being one person short for a few days. Although she was doing what she thought was the right thing (esp. as she was a fee-paying Ph.D student), it was actually quite inconsiderate - the other Ph.D student in our group ended up missing a full week of work because she had decided to come in and cough and splutter all over us!

Similarly, I have been sent home from work for turning up whilst clearly not well, purely for safety reasons (mine and other people's)... I was dizzy and asked my boss if I could be relieved of my practical work duties and just do computer-based stuff, at which point she phoned a taxi immediately, told me to see my doctor and not to come back until I was well. She was quite right to do so... turned out I had an ear infection that was seriously affecting my balance. Bad idea when you work in a busy office, even worse idea when you work in a lab. I was off for two whole weeks, which would have been sweet if it was not for the fact that I was not entitled to any sick pay... (being a temp)

As for what I do when I'm sick, I just take it easy and watch some telly and avoid doing anything that requires too much concentration (including computer games). As long as their is some Heinz cream of tomato soup and some bread in the house, I'll be fine ;)

Ahh, Heinz Tommy Soup - soothing the sickly for decades.

If i'm ill i'll do whatever i feel like doing. Doing something against your will when you feel unwell is never going to help you - with the exception of drinking liquids, which in moderation will always keep you hydrated. If i feel like sleeping, i'll sleep. If i feel like watching TV, i'll watch TV. If i fancy something to eat, i'll eat. If i don't feel like doing any of these things i won't force myself to do so just because people say its the best thing to do. Listen to your own body - it naturally knows what it needs. Having said all that, i'm lucky, i have the constitution of an Ox - i've had about 3 (genuine) sick days off in the past 11.5 years of work.

Sitting in lecture taking notes it's hard to get other people sick.

What makes you say that? Do you go to class like this?

Otherwise, you're spreading airborne pathogens all over your classmates.

To get me to stay home I have to have a fever, be physically ill, unable to safely drive a vehicle, or have specific instructions from my doctor. I have powered through migraines, mildly upset stomachs, and a ton of other symptoms.

This is my first instance with food poisoning, so I really didn't know what I was in for. I couldn't eat anything or drink anything before I got it all out of me because it just made things worse. I couldn't drink a bottle of water, let alone a gallon and a half. The ginger ale didn't do much either, but Coke did really well surprisingly (caffeine free, non-free made it much, much worse at night  No sleep = no healing)

I couldn't taste the vomit either it just came out so fast (sorry for anyone with sensitive stomachs).
Wait a sec, you have food poisoning and you are just vomitting? I got food poisoning from some bad buffalo wings once and by the time it hit some had already left my stomach and gone into my system. I didn't feel like doing anything. Then to boot it was the night before my last final that semester.

When it hit I first went freezing cold, so I wrapped up in my covers. Then I got a blazing fever, dripping sweat and was putting ice packs on me just to feel comfortable. Then it would go cold and then hot, back and forth. A few hours of trying to sleep like this and then the stomach problems hit. I had to take a bucket to the bathroom with me because you can't sit and kneel over a toilet at once. After my final (that was fun) my dad had to pick me up from school for the Christmas holidays. I went to the doctor, he told me it was food poisoning and to just keep drinking fluids and have a Merry Christmas. Above describes how I was for a week. The first day I felt like getting out of bed was Christmas Eve. I did our family thing and ate a whole roll, and then I questioned that.

Needless to say I lost a few pounds from my food poisoning. It took me five years to eat buffalo wings of any kind again.

I don't get properly ill and, as a result, have only ever taken 2 sick days.

Given that I had busted a rib or two, I spent the majority lain in bed, dosed up on drugs and whimpering.

Wait a sec, you have food poisoning and you are just vomitting?

*long and horrific unpleasant story*

No, vomiting and diarrhea. Nowhere near as bad as that though, just on and off one or another for about 14-18 hours.

You might want to get your blood tested anyway. It's a good idea to do so regularly.

If at any point your poop was a light brown or yellowish color, you definitely need to go get your blood tested. Hep A ain't no joke.

well surprisingly i was sorta sick yesterday. On Wednesday i ate taco bell and it just didn't sit right with my stomach and i already have stomach problems anyway. So i consequently didn't get to sleep until 3 in the morning because of restlessness due to stomach pain.

When i woke up in the morning I knew i was going to fall asleep in school ( i already do anyway ) so instead of try to keep awake all day i decided to play sick as if my stomach problem hadn't gotten any better from the night before.

whenever im sick the one rule is always "you can only watch tv, no computer or ps2" ya, like i want to sit on my ass and watch tv all day, so i turned on the computer and played runescape. The one thing i have to watch out for is my dad because he comes home to eat so around 11 i turned my computer off just to make sure.

I make a habit to watch The Price is Right, which is usually when breakfast occurs when I'm sick and not at work.

All of the show is composed of commericals, like a NASCAR race. Still like it, though.

speaking of nascar. do you see that they're putting gay little spoilers on them. that just makes it even more unbearable to watch. and the camry, why god, why!

anyways like you guys said to, when i've actually been sick the price is right and shows like that seem to be relaxing and interesting to watch for some reason.

there are some sicknesses that i used to get while living in New Hampshire that seemed to be pretty cool. I had pneumonia a couple of times and except for throwing up and constantly being cold or hot, i didn't seem to bad getting half the week off. the flem sucked too. i remember laying in bed ( it had to be thanksgiving ) and watching king of the hill for the whole day. thats about the only time when i've actually been able to watch that show, its so stupid.

some sucked really bad like strep throat in middle school. The bitchy nurse wouldn't let me home because i didn't have a fever :grumpy:. It hurt so bad that i couldn't help from crying and it took my teacher telling the nurse off to get me out of school.

I never thought of that, but I did have a physical exam 2 months ago, and it turns out I guess it wasn't food poisoning. No sooner than 1 day after I get back I hear literally 12 other people have had this week. Stomach virus I guess. Thank goodness.

Weird since it had the same symptoms as food poisoning, albeit on a smaller scale.

That man will one day go down in history as a king. The king of game shows and pet neutering.

When I'm sick I just go on GTPlanet and play ps3. If I'm really sick I sit down and watch TV all day.

Lol at my post at the top. Brings back bad memories.

I don't take very many sick days off. I got one week off by the school for having pinkeye, and one week for another sickness (epic stomach cramps, vomiting, the whole nine yards). Only two (well, one really) major sick times I've had; I'll consider myself lucky.

For that second one, I'd just sleep when/if I could. When I couldn't, I'd listen to different stand-up comedians (turns out laughter is a decent medicine) or take hot showers (stomach didn't seem to cramp as much for a while afterwards). I'd avoid doing anything strenuous, and, as has been said before, drink tons of fluids.

Digger :sly:.

What are these sick days that people were talking about :grumpy:. In the last 11 years at my current job I only average 2 sick days a year. and that is also not taking one in the last three. Just don't have time to be sick.

The last time I had a "sick day" (about a week ago), I slept in until 12N and got up to watch CNBC. So exciting, my life is.

Normally, it seems, I just lounge around the house all day, take a shower, and watch the news, perhaps the cartoon network as well (the show 6teen rocks!).

when i is sick, i just chill in bed, watch some TV maybe turn on the Video Games sometimes i just try and focus on NOT being sick, so i just end up with the music on and trying to write, when I'm sick i can get very creative.

Usually when sick, I finish any homework I have to do for the coming week (I get my assignments in the beginning of the week, minor classes, then turn them in at the end of the week [yay homeschool network!]) then I sit in bed doing what I normally do, unless I get a diseased stomach, then I sit in bed and do the normal things sans playing videogames. It works out quite nicely.

I watch Top Gear until I get bored of Top Gear (usually 1 and a half days) and then I play GT4. It's become a sort of sick day tradition.

Well last time I was ill I just ended up watching loads of American Chopper, and now I'm quite a big fan of the show...

I usually cook a lot when I'm sick. I'm suddenly a culinary genius when I get the Flu, irony is, whenever i get the flu, i get total paralysis in my legs. Getting to the microwave and fridge are not fun. I also play GT2 and GT4 a lot, as well as Forza 2. I also get on YouTube and watch stuff like Code Lyoko and Rosario+Vampire.
