What do you do when you're online?

Um, what? :p You don’t launch and quit a mail client each time you check your mail; you leave it on all the time, and when you get new mail, it alerts you.

I suspect that 90% of the people who don’t use desktop email clients have never even tried it. Once you use it, you realize how annoying webmail is.

What about people who have one computer per family? I'd think something like Gmail would be optimum.

I’m confused as to why so many people check their email using webmail – doesn’t anybody use desktop clients? They’re so much more convenient. (And now that Gmail uses IMAP, there’s almost no excuse to not use a desktop client.)

I just leave a Gmail tab open all the time. I look up at the number of unread messages in the title every now and then, and if the number has gone up I’ll check out the tab.

I find it much less intrusive than an alert coming up to tell me that I have mail. If something is urgent IM me, because for me e-mail should never be used when you want a response right now.
