What do you guys think of GT3's AI?

I think that the computer drivers in GT3 are quite dumb...when they try to overtake, they almost always bump the car in front, they pit in for no apparent reason...even though they are good drivers.

I'm quite happy with the game as it is - even though they promised "unparalled AI" when the game was in production, and i was dissapointed at first.

I'm used to it now, even though some strange things happen every once in a while...

As far as driving abilities goes, they're quite good. But for race strategy, I don't think that much has been worked on. It's difficult to build a strategically thinking real time computer oponent. If you look at first person shooter type games, the AI players follow a path, don't hide, stand in wide open spaces ... but when you're in the same room with one, suddenly its gun is trained on your forehead. That's because that much of computer 'AI' is easy. Granted, there are bot scripts out there that help them to appear more 'realistic'.

But yeah, the AI racers in GT3 come across quite lame.

Im not impressed with the AI. They cant seem to handle high HP cars. i was doing the GT Allstars professional league the other day, and i had a ball watching the replay. the R390 and the toyota GT1 were constantly battleing it out, and almost always running off the road and nearly spinning out in the dirt. it was a disgrace to racing, as my lil 7 yr old sister drives better, and she can barely put her thumbs on the analog thumb sticks! i eventually laped these fools without much trouble, and they were definetly not stock. because they almost always caught up or passed me in the straight aways, and i was driveing a F090/s and later i tried again with the Zonda Racer which has 1195 HP at the moment, and got the same results. i hope GT4/wutever stresses driver AI as well as everything else. but i guess it wont matter much since we should all be racing online by then 😈

I will agree with you mr. sack ;) I am currently experimenting with what car to run on the trial mountain enduro and am getting extreemely pissed at the A1. They make no attempt to not hit you in a hard corner, weather it be from the rear or side. The problem seems to be less apparent when running a slower group of vehicals, but still there. Same with routine bashes into walls and such. I have followed a few different cars for a few different laps on trial mountain and they always hit the walls in the same spots. On the pitting, I dunno. I've been watching them throughout the enduro's and have noticed certain cars getting into routine cycles, just like we have to. But then again, I've run the roadster race three times now and two of the three, the #2 and 3 car have pitted on the last lap, after only having 3 laps on the tires. I could see maybe doing this during the race, but I would think they would, (if human), try and hold out one last lap rather than drop to the last positions. (considering that there was only 3 laps on their tires) Somthing I have noticed that seem cool is on enduros, somtimes a pair of cars will act as a team. Or at least always try and pit together and hold the first two spots. I tested this once by keeping one of the cars out of the pits while the other was in. I could not break the "double car pitting" routine as the lead car took an extra pit on the next lap just to get back in sync with the 2nd place car. (or so it seemed to me) I thought maybe I was just reading into this too much but I did it over and over and the same thing occured. Both Miata LS's would always pit together and adjust their laptimes accordingly so one wasn't too far ahead of the other.

The AI is a disgrace - they should look to the AI in the TOCA series, that is the best I've come across (not bad for 16 cars on a PSX).

It aggravates me when they don't bother too even try to brake and take you all the way to wall. I don't know how many times I've been rammed form the rear while making a beautiful corner by the R390. Watch the replay and his brake lights never came on and he nearly flips when he hits the wall. Thats not good programming there. I try to race them clean and make good passes. That is racing. If I wanted to mash cars I'd get out Demolition Derby.

The AI for a game as good and as popular as Gran Turismo is basically crap compared to other aspects of the game. If you look at Burnout, for example, the AI is just not compareable. In Burnout people flash their lights at you, beep horns, pull in and out of your way etc.

I agree, AI is dumb as a knob. Also there are different, or at least should be, different strategies for driving different cars. A heavy Viper or Corvette race car has good power but a little rough in the corners compared to say a light Elise LM racer but on the track together they drive the exact same way and break in the same spots, which is a discrace to racing (break turn in, break at the apex, then accelerate) and the constant bashing.

I like to play with all the driving aids turned off and even mess around with the simulation tires, thanks but not thanks if I race against others. Oh and never mind racing room. The cool thing with watching series like Grand-Am, ALMS and Gt series is watching two or three cars squeeze through the same corners and race door to door. I'd like to see anybody who is door to door with an AI car on trial mountain and not be tasting a whole bunch of rock, either on the inside or outside of the corner.

And lastly what about a little self preservation!? Is that too much to ask for. I push a little to hard out of a corner, the tail steps out, try to correct.... I got it.... I got it.... I got.... POW, spun like a top from an AI car whose attitude is "I'm on the line, your going slower than me so too bad" Tha's like the bully on the playground that used to go "I'm just going to swing my arms like this and walk forward and if you happen to get in my way...." I realize there is no damage model in the game but please driving straight into the side of a spun car is just not done in real racing.

THe IA in GT# if fine the way it is for now but need improving because of the difference between GT2 and GT3 I'm happy but I need to see some errors in the drivers and make them feel like they are really competing thats why I cant wait till they come out with the internet connection so everyone is really competing.
ok thanks peace

I think the AI is unable to handle high powered cars. They can handle the slow cars perfect, almost to perfect for me at times. I do enjoy the races in the beginning but if you want a challenge, regardless of the level of AI, run stock cars or underpowered cars in a class to challenge yourself.

yup, the slower cars are a blast. that's why I enjoy the roadster enduro so much!! (they're not too slow but slow enough for some competition) I can say I've seen some nice turn action on Trial mountain though.. (maybe the cars I was running aren't as quick as what you were complaining about tho) I was running the trial mountain enduro in an NSX-zero and we got 3 wide in the turn at the end of the straight quite a few times. Made for a great replay.. which reminds me of somthing I'm gonna go post in the "don't you hate.." thread.

I am 12 nearly 13. Well I will be in 10 days.

The AI sucks but my 17 year old brother sucks even more. He can do all the Races I can't do eg Zonda and stuff. But I got all the Licenses by myself :) (shux).

But how come he can do the races I can't and win them and in 2 player mode I beat him! 15/16 races!

This is wierd

I got really pissed off when a computer NSX (on SS route 11) tried to overtake me on a sharp corner, bumping me and spinning me out. He eventually won the race because of that. :(

In GT1,GT2,they never make mistakes!

That's true - in the sports car cup last night at Cote d'Azur I saw the AI (in a TVR I think) go up against the barriers, and actually grab reverse to get out of the spot!

I don't think it's a case of the AI going out of it's way to ram you, it seems to me like the AI cars are completely unaware of other cars on the track, even each other. They're just following the programmed line, just like they did in GT1 and GT2. This was a disappointment because I remember the pre-GT3 hype about the 'emotional AI' that was going to be so amazing. For example, AI drivers were supposed to be more aggressive toward you if you bumped/pushed them around. They must've had some problems with that...

I know they gotta get some other major stuff figured out first but here's somthing I think would be sweet, learning A1... Some new games, like whatever the next will be to replace the Tomb Raider series, (don't even know if Eidos has a name for it yet), is going to be made so that your "person" you are controlling in the game is going to get better at doing certian things, such as jumping, the more you do it. (if that made any sense) Anywho, I think it'd be pretty sweet if they could get the A1 to do this, in say, a series or enduro race, so that the computer drivers learn what your typical line is through, say, corner #1 and then try and use that to "their" advantage. Just an idea, since real drivers of course do this.. They would get progressively better at it through the races and/or laps. Dunno how long it will be till we see that kind of thing though, that's getting pretty in-depth. I guess they've already done this, in a sense, with "your" car, in how the peak hp and such changes during the break in period. That's pretty cool if you ask me.
