I'm using a ps3 controller, and I just find it pretty much impossible to control a high HP car with all aids off.
I know a lot of people online do not use any aids, but do most of you also play with the controller with all aids off?
Am I just inexperienced with the game and the controller?

I drive with a controller and all aids turned off. It is possible to control high HP cars but you need a lot of practice and a good control setup. I personally use the right analog stick for accelerating and braking and L2/R2 for shifting gears, I find that quite a good setup. With high HP cars, you need to be really gentle on the throttle to avoid wheelspin and you need to drive nice and smooth. I hope I helped. 👍

^ This, I also use a similar setup as him. Generally, the most difficult part is to control the wheelspin and practicing how to countersteer;)

In general, practice practice practice:D

I use aids how i feel like and wont be dictated too by the 'elitists' on here who believe it's cheating to use them. How can it be cheating if the game provides them? I never enter a room that doesn't allow the use of them as it should be my decision how i use my game, not some little bedroom dictator. I don't have the time or patience to 'learn' how to control cars that i can drive perfectly well with my choice of set up. My real life car is in the game and has no driver aids and handles brilliantly yet in the game it's a pig to drive (without aids) so i don't class it as being realistic, just unnecesarily awkward.

I drive with a Logitech G25 and no not turn all aids off...
ABS is always set to 1.
TC is off, except for cars with a lot of HP (400-500+), I just need TC there.
All other aids are permanently off.

I drive with no aids but I have a wheel. With a controller I can justify having aids on but my brother doesn't much experience with driving or driving games and he still races with no aids (even no abs) with a controller better than most drivers I've seen online.

With a wheel I drive with no ABS. I know that driving with no abs doens't really give you any advantage or even bragging rights but I do it for a slight additive to the realism of the game. In real racing you can't just stomp on the brake pedal whenever you feel like it, you have to control braking as you have to control accelerating.

The trick to getting rid of abs is to adjust brake balance. Whenever I get a new car I always set the brake balance to 4/1 and if that doesn't feel ok (fronts locking up too much) I adjust it but 4/1 works for most cars just fine.

With these settings I haven't noticed people out braking me online but on the downside this is just an added handicap which doesn't really bring me any reward. But that's how I like to play.

Race how you want/need to race to enjoy it.

I use a controller. I use traction control at 1 or 2 and abs at 1 or 2. I weened off the other aids and now control my cars a little better.

If you race and lose control, remember to give way to other drivers and then continue. It happens and will continue to happen. Winning is fun but it's not all this game is about. Car control leads to winning.

Im still a DS3 man, and I will generally drive will all aids (bar ABS at 1) off. The only time I bring back traction control is for the high power cars just to keep the rear in some form of order, and even then its only at level 1. That gets tricky though when you go into a slide and try to drift the way through using power, and the tc cuts in and then you spin. I occasionally turn ASM on for my Formula GT, just to keep the snap oversteer in check (havent got an X2010 yet).

But thats how I play. How you play really shouldnt matter to anyone but yourself. Some people just dont have the patience or skill to drive all aids off, or just palin dont want to. Oh well. You play how you want to enjoy the game.

I don't think there's any shame in using driver aids, with the exception of Skid Recovery Force (which is basically the equivalent of training wheels). High-power LMP cars / F1 cars (previous seasons) have used traction control, so why not me in my little fake racing game with my little plastic controller nubs?

I usually use manual gears on my Dual Shock 3, acceleration/braking back on the right stick, with TC for higher-power race cars. I usually use a touch of ABS.

I knew this image would come in handy sometime.

Just start to take one off at a time like I did, then just get used to how it's supposed to handle

Driving Line and ABS at 1, TC @ 0,1 or 2 depending on the car. But 2 is only for the extremes.

Controller with aids off is 100% doable with any car. Even with the ABS off. I often drive like this. The only aid I'll turn on is ABS, but I don't always use it.

You just need to learn throttle/brake control. Using TCS, etc may make you "lazy" in that you're not used to finely adjusting pressure on the buttons through a turn. I find aids off more fun and faster.

ASM (active stability management) should definietly never be used in this game with a wheel, I tried it on the FGT A-Apec event, and it lags and makes the car handling feel corrected at all times, leaving you behind 1st place because the way YOU want to drive this car with your own modulation will not be possible.

ASM must stay off.

well, all the others are off too, except for ABS, but this is only due to the fact that the brake pedal is still poorly implemented in the game. It pretty much analog but on steroids. Almost all or nothing.

I found that TCS can be set to higher than 1, on the Formula Car, without impeding performance, and even with TCS at 4 or 5, the car will still spin out if your not careful.

I only use ABS set to 1 online.
All aids off.
I use ABS mostly because in real life you have some feedback on how hard can you push the brake pedal without getting your wheels to lock, where as on PS3 controler you don't have any feedback on how hard you can brake.
Of course, I used aids before - but after golding every licence/special event (apart from X2010) I noticed how faster I am without aids.

X for throttle and [ ] for braking on DS3 and I never use aids as one would've known for reading that image.

Bedroom dictator, nice. I agree, play how you want. If you call someone a noob for enjoying a game the way they want then you are a supreme douche-nozzle.

Using my old GTPro wheel with the exact same settings

You know how people use that whole throttle control thing?

How much less effective is it to blip the throttle with the R2 button? I do it and it seems to work, although the car is probably not shifting weight that well.

I play with a DS3 using X for throttle and Square for brake (got used to it since GT1). I play with all AIDS off except ABS set to 1. However anything above 700/800 BHP such as Group C cars, etc, and I might set TC to 1 depending on the track.

I actually rapidly tap X coming out of slow corners, applying a little more power each tap. It's a little weird at first but you get used to it and it becomes instinctual eventually.

It's actually quite effective, I have 60 golds in the license tests, the x2010, and many online wins using this technique.

I play with a dualshock 3 and I find that if I turn off all aids anything I drive becomes slippery and uncontrollable. I use ASM, TC at 5 and ABS at 1.

As I've often explained, there's nothing wrong with players playing the game how they enjoy playing it. If they want or need the driving aids, that's wonderful; that's what they're there for. More skilled players wanting more of a challenge rather than playing on easy mode can turn them off if they wish.

The only problems I have pertaining to driving aids are:
  1. Players that feel the need to justify using them, as though we care whether they use them or not and/or as though they're actually doing what's proper or right by using them.
  2. People that use them, especially using unrealistic aids like the magic race line or skid recovery, that then turn around and boast about how skilled they are.

Even using aids in the game on a car that actually did normally have them isn't what's proper or what's right. Again, if someone wants or needs them, that's wonderful; use them. However, if a player of higher skill level wants more of a challenge, by all means turn off the aids even on a car that normally has them in real life. If somebody wants to drive a car that in real life had traction control but run it without TCS in the game, that's absolutely fantastic that they're skilled enough to do so. "The real life car had it so I'm gonna use it" is just an excuse.

Still, again, if someone wants or needs them, use them. People don't need to bother with excuses for them. They're there to help players that need the help.

Just Active Stability Management and ABS set to 1, thats it.
