What First Car Should I Buy?

My choices are

Early 90's Miata
or
Save up more and buy a 6th gen SIR, or an SIR Hatchback

SIR will have more horsepower and be more practical...and has VTEC.

Miata is a convertible and handles much better and RWD.

Whatever car I end up buying will be taken to trackdays and Autocross.

Option 3 is a good option.

I had to chuckle at a bit your VTEC comment, because it doesn't really add much to the point of power besides making it extra clear it will only develop it over 4000 RPM :p Would certainly be a practical car though, if you go with the hatchback.

And think carefully if you want to own a Miata in such a rainy area.

It adds a lot when VTEC KIKS IN YO, haha. If I do buy a Civic it WILL have VTEC, as I said lots of performance driving for either car I get, VTEC will help with the performance driving. Hatchback will be really nice, I will be able to put ,my golf clubs in the back :sly:

I really would like an E30, thing is parts would be fairly pricey and thats not the best for a first car, maybe for 2nd or 3rd car.

If I were to buy a Miata, I would get a hardtop no doubt, and most likey keep it because the car will be a little stiffer.
 
Its easy. Miata> Civic :lol: If your going to track it I would say the miata would be more fun.

That said, anything is better than a Honduh, the Miata is at least kinda cool and RWD.

I think it's more practical to buy an E36. You can get one in better condition for the same price, with some extra space. E30s being sought after and becoming classics are getting a tad expensive, plus it's harder to find a nice E30 since they are older (though there's a lot of riced out E36s out there).
 
Insurance and cost of ownerships is fairly high in Canada, so there is a big difference between owning a old BMW and owning a old Civic/Miata. Plus, as far as reliability goes, for a first car, get the Civic, safer bet than a bimmer.
 
Here are a few Miatas for sale near Vancouver. I'd get the Miata over the Honda, but I'd also advise you to shop around with your budget. You may be able to snag a Porsche 924 or 944 for similar money, though as said of the E30 parts will not be cheap. Oh yeah, look at the Nissan 240sx, they're fun and fairly practical.

$2,500 OBO, 309,xxx km, hard top, has a few modifications
$2,500, 295,000 km, LSD
$3,200 OBO, 200,000 km, Magnaflow exhaust

240SX:
$2,500 OBO, needs wiring harness, modified
$4,000, modified, gorgeous car

If you have the money, the second Nissan looks great :drool:
 
I think a 944 would be pretty bad, they're not that unreliable but they require quite a bit of relatively expensive maintenance to keep in good shape and so nothing breaks.
The 240 is a good idea, though they are a tad overpriced like the E30.
How about a 280ZX (Z31)?

They're not as nice looking as the S30 or the Z32 but they're pretty cheap right now and you can get a turbo one for less than a miata and leave the rest for mods/maintenance
 
Not sure if this is practical for you, but I chose a 600cc street bike. It will beat most cars that I run into off the line, and will get 40-50mpg if I baby it. I paid $2000 for a wrecked one and I have about $800-1000 into making it safe and street legal (rims and tires, mirrors, rear set, rear peg, and brake pedal). The only expensive part is insurance.

Edit: it is also a fun track bike but to run at my local track you have to get a full leather suit ($1000-15000). Another thing that sets bikes away from cars is going somewhere isn't just about being there, it's having fun getting there. Every ride is different even if you have driven that route 2 times a day for the past 3 years.
