reach out if you want it
My old fat ps3 has died for the 2nd time and it needs the laser replaced again, instead I have purchased a new slim 320GB unit.

Fortunately the old girls hard disc was fine so I was able to copy all the game saves and make a system backup to a usb hard drive.

So my queston is
What is the correct procedure for restoring my back up from the old unit to the new unit.

Do I load the games from the discs to the new unit and then restore the backup (from the old unit) or do I just need to restore the back up without loading the games from the discs ?

Does the system backup contain all the different game saves or do I also need to copy the saves over as well.

Thanks for any help

It took me a long time to figure this out when i did it, and when i finally did enough research i did it successfully.
(HD means Hard Drive)

So let me get this straight,
1. You have 1 working PS3 with an empty 320gb HD.

2. You have a working old HD with memory you want to switch to the new HD?

So if the above is what you are saying then this is what you need to do.

Step 1> Remove New HD from the new PS3. Replace with old HD.

Step 2> Hook up A storage media and use the backup Utility the ps3 has and download your data to the storage device. (I know you said that you had already done this BUT did you use the backup utility? If you didn't, you did not successfully transfer ALL the memory to the media storage device AND is the media storage device Fat32 or NTFS? If it's NTFS you will not be able to re-upload to new HD.)

Step 3> Switch the Hard Drives again so the new one is in the ps3. Use the ps3 restore function to transfer your memory from the storage device to new HD.

Step 4> You might need to upload the 3.55 update to do this BUT i think all the Slims already have them pre-downloaded.

Ask me anything if you need help ;)

Cheers for the help mate.

Dont want to do the hd swap, I just want my new ps3 to have all the game data and saves that was on my old PS3.

I used the backup utility on the old ps3 to backup the data to a usb external hd (yes its a fat32 drive)

Can I just use the backup utility on the new ps3 to restore all the old data from the usb drive to the new ps3.

Oh i thought that your old PS3 was totally dead. In that case, since you already have the external HD with all the memory, you should be able to just hook it up to your PS3 and if i remember correctly, there should be a restore option like there is a backup utility.
