What is the Most Overrated Car Of All Time?

And, to make myself clear, I don't know if I will find the GT-R fun or not. But for sure I know that those intrusive aids will take some of the fun of the GT-R, and will make the drive less challenging. And those are negative points already.

Gotcha, and thank you for explaining yourself more clearly. However, I'd be inclined to disagree based on every single review I've read about the GT-R. Much as it does have a multitude of driving aids, it's still supposed to be an involving and entertaining drivers car - sure, it probably doesn't have the level of connection that one of these does, but that doesn't mean it's entirely devoid of feel and requires no skill to pilot.

For the record, I'm not really a fan of the GT-R, impressive though it is. But I'd sure as hell jump at the chance to have a go in one...

TVC

Of course, a bunch of guys with Porsches in their avatars are totally going to say the GT-R is awesome... ;)

Seriously though, read some professional reviews of the car. By people who can actually spell, and punctuate. The Nissan often comes out very well indeed. Of course, it's not going to be as "analogue" to drive as something like a 911, but then that's the case for 99.9% of the cars on the road. My point is that despite it's massive competence in all areas, it's still supposed to be great to drive.

And for the record, I do think it's overrated, and I do prefer Porsches myself. But I think it's inaccurate to say that it's not fun, or it's not a drivers car.

I agree with you.

I don't really think it is overrated though. It is a fast car and I think one reason so many people make such a big deal about it is because it's a Nissan and it's really the only Japanese car that can compete with the fastest European and American cars.

I honestly see more people bellyaching about the thing than I see raving about it. of course, I don't go trolling on ricer forums. because trolling's not nice, kids.

Note: amateur review.

You can have this and any number of amateur reviews on other sites that say otherwise.

I remember back in the Poverty days... he was claiming that until a certain Porsche 911 Turbo enthusiast chimed in about the GT-R, he would not believe the "rubbish" reviews by "so-called" professional reviewers.

Guess what?

His idol loved it.

He never mentioned the guy after that.

Well on the original subject in Australia the Holden Commodore would have to be the most over rated 👍. Up until about 18 months ago they have been the most selling car in the country for about 10 or 15 years. :dunce: Plus new versions are coming out all the time. Lately the fuel economy of the Commodore was a bit heavy so they started to lose business.:nervous::sick:

Now they've got a newer version that can do over 600 km's on one tank . Well i suppose that being said everything the Commodore has stood for and has always stood for still exists today. A good honest car with enough room for the family, heaps of extras and alright on fuel (although there is a little more to be desired there on some models ).

Also there are hundreds of thousands of those cars just rolling around little Rockhampton. All the models from 85's to 2010's.
Well that's all I think I can squeeze out of that car for now.
Cheers

I'm trying to figure out, here, if you're misunderstanding "overrated."

The word Overrated means something that's unworthy of it's praise. Something like...The Renault Alliance getting Motor Trend's Car of the Year. That sort of thing. You, instead, have given us a case of why the Commodore ISN'T overrated. From your words, I would think the Commodore is quite a good car.

Same here. I believe he didn't expressed himself correctly. Otherwise, I can't believe what he wrote trying to prove his point.

Well, the R35 has recieved a lot of hype, but it was really GT that introduced me to the GTR back in the day, and I guess thats when the R33 was new on the scene. So for me, the R33 is pinnacle of the Skyline evolution - not in terms of performance obviously - it just has that kind of nostalgic wow factor. It goes without saying that owing to it's status within Gran Turismo 1 that the R33 NISMO 400R is like a mythical beast to me, it's one of my favourite cars - yet I know so little about it!

It's a big shame that most R33's I see around these days have been r'tardized by car modders with no taste and not enough cash.

I don't think you can doubt the GT-R's ability and they are classics... so I don't think they are overrated.

... if I had to nominate a most overrated car of all time it would be the E-type Jag... sorry but I just don't get it... ....that and the R8, although thats probably a hype thing again, as it probably is justifiably a highly rated car.

They were/are both exceptionally good cars that were/are universally praised. I don't see what's overrated about either?

In both cases my objection to them is the seemingly non-stop stream of praise that's poured over their looks. Both IMO are sinfully fugly, and yet the E-type is rarely mentioned without being called one of the most beautiful cars of all time, and the R8 the worst proportioned car since... errm, the E-type!

I recognise the irrelevance of my opinions on styling when it comes to being the Most Overrated Car Of All Time, but It grates like an angle-grinder on polystyrene when I have to listen to people going on about these two cars!

*pats shoulder*

I know how you feel. I'm mostly the same way about the R8. I'd disagree about the E-type.

well i see where you are coming from but i do quote
......Also there are hundreds of thousands of those cars just rolling around little Rockhampton. All the models from 85's to 2010's.......

Name one car of that era that was much better looking.
Here is a partial list of cars that debuted in the same year. Arguably, only the Volvo P1800 could be called more beautiful.

Arguably.

The E-type is one of the best looking cars of all time. Period.

It was brash, bold, and gave you the looks of a Ferrari for less.

Hard to argue with the sex appeal of the p*n*s on wheels...

What? I'm not gay at all.

Really.

Go look at your Viper and tell me it's not a phallic symbol. I dare you.

The car in "Goldmember" (the little electric thing the titular character drove, not the Shaguar,) was a phallic symbol. the only thing that came close was the "Blue Flame" rocket car.

Calling the long-hood/short deck shape "Phallic" is a stretch. it's not round.

and buying the car to prove your manhood doesn't count.

While I totally disagree with your suggestion of the E-Type, I do see your point with the R8. Part of the problem I have with the R8 is that the looks really do insist upon them-self (thank you Family Guy), and generally speaking, a lot of people like it only because of its looks. Granted, when the concept debuted, it was unlike anything we had seen. To get that much into the production car, Audi really did a good job. But for it actually being that special? It really isn't. The performance is good, but the price really isn't.

But here is the kicker: While I may think the R8 is overrated, I still like the standard V8 R8. Personally, I can't stand the V10 version... It just doesn't make sense. I guess that's part of the territory when you're a secret Porsche fan.

The E-Type is a sex toy on wheels.

Too bad motive magazine is dead... I remember this article, and it was a funny one.

Jag's E-type is the oft-imitated king of schlong cars. The revolutionary design included a hood stretched longer than any engine of the day could fill, meaning that all the mechanicals sat within the wheelbase for strong performance. It was the car to have for over a decade, and even more recently swingers like Austin Powers have used it to symbolize the loose morals of the late '60s. New York's Museum of Modern Art put one on permanent display in 1964, and no car company since has captured the spirit of male genitalia quite so thrustingly

A lot of people put the E-Type at the top of this particular list... though many will disagree about the other entries.

And no. I'm still not gay. But I still love the thing.

I like it more in Coupe form... less... disturbing.

I never really liked the looks of the E-Type coupe, it seems to ride too high, the cabin seems a little too bulbous, but the convertible on the other hand, that's a beautiful piece of work.

I didn't like the looks of the E type, until I saw the steel type design wheels lifted from the D type and XKSS put on it. Saw it the other week and it completely changed the look of it for the better.

Mines would be the Mazda Rx-7 3rd gen

1.Because at the time and up to now the car had a excellent handling.
Also it had 280hp with a twin turbo system som came with 5-6speed trannys.
It was also known for giving the Skylines,Nsx and supras competition.

2.Even to this day for a car thats 14 years old the car is still loved by many car enthusiasts.
To buy i think it went for some where to $10,000-$20,000.

Is this better?

Mines would be the Rx-7 3rd gen because ot it's performance and it's comfy seats down to its sexy body style. Also the 1st gen because i own one and also i love the interior.

So they are overrated because of this? Am I missing something?
