What is the point of license tests?

They're just bonus objective now. Do it if you want Cr,XP and cars.
Edit: My bad, you get no Cr from license tests, XP and cars only.

It's good for:

a) Learning driving techniques...although not required to compete in A or B Spec

b) XP

c) Prize cars

d) The challenge of it and bragging rights

e) Getting to try a variety of cars before you'd ever be capable of purchasing them

They are definitely worth your time and I'm having a ton of fun completing them and trying to get all gold. Out of the 50 I've tried so far, I've golded 48, but it's all I've done lately.

They are the only almost un-cheatable part of the game... Achieve all of these and you've REALLY accomplished something!

The A-Spec challenges can usually be beaten easily with upgraded cars or simply something double or triple the horsepower of the 'Typical Opponents'.

Only the License tests mandate car, driving assists, etc., so you have no option but to play them the way they come. For me, so far, they have been the only serious challenge (which I equate to fun) in the game.

I do miss the license requirements for races.
It seemed a lot more logical.... actually, a lot of GT4 seemed a lot more logical.

Still enjoying the game a lot though :D

Agreed I still think you should need them to compete in races....

Logical, yes. Sensible? Not so much. There would be far too many people missing out on parts of the game due to this. There were in past GT games (I myself never finished all of the licenses) but I think PD just want to get people as many people playing as possible now.

I'm glad that they are optional now. I can do them when I want, and enjoy them. Sadly, XP is even worse than mandatory licenses.

the license tests are pretty pointless in this game. You used to need them to participate in certain races but now with the leveling up it doesnt matter. Maybe if the license tests actually gave you a decent amount of XP instead of a measly 140-350 points, then they would be good. When your in the 20+ levels, those 100-300 points do jack **** to help level you up.

Maybe you're not supposed to do them when you're at level 20+? Did you do your license tests at first in other GT games? That's what I did. Do ALL the license tests first to get that experience and free cars, know the tracks and braking points and layouts of them, then get on with my career, that's just how I planned it.

I hated the license tests in previous GTs. Such drudgery just to get to race.

But they teach you a lot about the game engine, game physics and car dynamics... even though you were locked in a car on rock-hard economy tires with all the game aids on!

It's great that they're optional now... though they should be mandatory for online play... :D

I have finally beaten IC-10, so now I have 30 gold in the license tests. I was going to start the next 10 tests but I can't because my a spec is only 8 which means I'll have to do some beginner races, I think.
Is this the case?

Some of the Special Challenges don't require you to bring your own car, so you could do some of those.
But yes, you won't be able to compete for the S license until you reach the required XP level.

And when you do it this way, you level up fast and the beginner a-spec events become pointless because they give such little XP. Either way, some events become pointless. And then you hit Level 23, do the one event that opens at that level, and then you're forced to redo old races repeatedly to get to level 24. (I'm sure the grinding doesn't stop there, either.) The game design of the career and leveling was not thought-out very well at all.

The S-license was ridiculous. Even the B-license was harder than the S-license. Got 10 golds, 1-3 attempts per course... Guess I was expecting some kind of grande finale. :)

Curious, but if I get all gold first time around, do I get all 3 bonus cars? Like the ones I get for bronze/silver/gold?

No, you have to redo each test and make sure you do worse to get bronze and silver. :p

O.K I'm now doing the IB tests and the first thing is the stupid stopping test. I did that after numerous attempts, I think it's random chance for that one. Then it was the Madrid track that's fine did that one. Now I'm back at the cone slalom. I'm thinking now that these 2 tests are to try and make you quit or there is some preset number of attempts you have to make.
I'm just venting a little, I know that eventually I beat them all.

Got the cone slalom done. I ended up using full throttle all the way with slight touches on the brakes between cones. You have to get into a rhythm to make it. I was getting a little frustrated so once I got 18.495 the first time I saved the reply and moved on gladly to the rally test. I am .19 away from gold in the rally test and I quit because the system froze.I looked ahead and I didn't see anymore stopping or slalom tests.
