What is the purpose of Life?

Ooh, that's a good question. Do you mean my life, or life in general?

The purpose of my life is to make a positive contribution to humanity. I choose to live my life in the best way I can, and it's serving me pretty well thus far. I've contributed a lot to a lot of people's knowledge about a few things, which is pretty much what we're here for.

As for life itself, I don't think there is a purpose as such. It's like anything that's free and unexpected: I didn't ask for it, and I didn't pay for it, so I might as well just do the best I can with it. It wasn't pre-ordained that I should live, so my life can only have the purpose I attach to it.

Just my opinion, of course...

then, to drive the hell out of them, until you reach that breaking point, where, well... you make the highlight reel on the monday night sports program for the most unbelievable wreck! 😈

But quite a good one, I think. I'm kind of distressed by the constant yearning for some 'higher' meaning of life. Why isn't this wonderful thing rewarding and complete in itself? What better reason could you need to be alive?

I see no need to have a 'meaning' for life in general. Like you, Giles, I think that the meaning of an individual's life is up to that individual.

I think the meaning of a person's life is to define and earn their own joy, without relying on anyone else to give it to them. What higher purpose could I serve than to set my own goals of happiness, and satisfy them myself? That is enough meaning for me.
