What is this "Paint System" I keep hearing about?

Is it something simply to repaint a car a different color? How does it work? All i remember is that once you bought a car in GT, the color you bought it with is the color you keep, and with exception of GT3 you add a racing modifacation..

Yes.

How does it work?
Any car in the game with a named color that you acquire in your garage, you get that color as part of a palette. You take a car to GT Auto, you select the currently available colors from your palette, and you pay 2000 credits to change your current car to that color. Race cars cannot be repainted, nor can a handful of Standard models.

Yes.

Oh ok. I thought it was more interesting than that(was hoping for some Forza type stuff). But you can only use the paints one I heard. If that's true, that's pretty retarded on PD's part.

And you cant preview the car in the colour - which is extra special retarded of PD. If you can only use each paint chip once, the least they can do is let you preview your car in the colour before you pull the trigger on the paint job.

This is but 1 of 67 or more pointless PD "improvements" ;)

You can sort-of preview the new paint, technically: paint it, and once it rolls out in the new colour, if you don't like it, quit the game before it auto-saves (which happens once you hit Accept). I read this earlier today, but have yet to try it myself, so I'm not sure if it works or not, though.

That's mostly correct. You can apply the paint and look at the car in GT Auto to your heart's content. The game doesn't save anything until you exit GT Auto, so you can exit the paint menu and do the other stuff at GT Auto (such as adding body kits and/or spoilers) without having to worry about the game saving. You can even repaint it in a different color if you want.
You just have to remember to not exit GT Auto but instead quit the game outright, and it still obviously doesn't work as well as if you could just preview the paint on the car in the first place.

Have you not played the game yet?

I preordered the game on august. A month before the game was suppose to be released, my PS3 YLOD. I fixed it, worked for about 2 week, YLODed again, fixed it, and it only lasted 3 days. Since then I canceled my preorder. Gonna have to wait til' next year cuz I gotta get gifts for other people, cant afford a PS3 right now. Just yesterday I traded in a bunch of old games and got Forza 3. I like it so far, but it's only to fill in the long gap.

Sucks.. GT5 is soo close, yet so far..

I have done that a few times now, but the one time it took an aweful long time to get back to the XMB... a nerve racking 30 seconds

*is this the moment my game save chunks it???*

*well?*

PHEWWWW!!!!111!11111!eleevntyone1!!1! No corruption ;)

It does also give you a weird random shape painted in the colour you selected, to the right of the car, but why they can't just give you a preview of the whole car is beyond me.

I have to agree, and it's a bit of a disappointment for me, albeit a mild one. I really see no logic to restricting me from simply painting the cars whatever color I want. If I want, I can take my real-world Ford Ranger (metallic green) and have it repainted whatever color I wish, and I don't need a paint chip to do so. It doesn't even have to be a manufacturer color, either, as I can have my Ranger painted puce or periwinkle if I so please, and I don't have to hunt down these color chips first before doing so.

I can't say that I follow Polyphony's "logic" behind this system. (I haven't really played the previous GT games, so I don't know if this has always been their way.) As near as I can tell, they just want to flip off the rest of the industry and do something their own way just for the sake of being rebellious. Polyphony Digital - Rebels Without a Clue.

Was that from me?

I use that method all the time, it always works.

They do it probably to encourage online community.

Don't see how? I mean out of the well over 100 paint chips I have acquired so far I have only had one duplicate so far(Which was an okay Yellow I ended up using to repaint my Z06 RM to give it more of a C6R look)

Are you interested in my York Green or my Hawaiian Blue Metallic chips?
(I assure you you aren't, they are some real ugly colours that even I will never use along with about 80% of the rest of them if that)

So I don't see how they can encourage the community at all other than to be annoyed that A: you can only use a colour once and then B: Have to pay 2k on top of that to use said paint colour once...

Add in the lack of real preview besides that rotating "body" animation the whole paint thing is rather a fail.

I think I read somewhere that if you have two PSN accounts you can gift a car from your main to your secondary account and it will also give them the color of the car. So basically if you paint your car a color and don't like it I guess you can gift the car, get the paint chip and gift both back. I have not yet tried this, but I hope it works.

The fact that colors can only be used once make the paints more valuable and desirable. Considering they can't be duped, this is GT5's "Economy or gold system" if you will. If one could easily get colors and use them an infinite number of times or if you could dupe them, then they would not be valuable at all. Where's the fun in that? What incentives would PD offer to the trading (gift) system?

It does.... discovered it inadvertantly when gifting a car to my girlfriend but it wasnt the one she wanted so gifted it back. Now she has cottoned on to this and is working her way towards an all pink garage.

/face....palm

Ok with the painting system:

You can use a color more than once. Just gift the car to a friend, have them give it back and you get the color again.

I did it with a Blue Alfa Romeo.

My items showed two of that color blue.

So if there is a color you want to use, just send the car associated with the color to a friend first, have them send it back to you and you can use the color on a new car and still keep the color in your items.
