I had hoped that the signs of life from the GPL subforum were details of a great new track.
Anyway, GPL is, in many people's opinion, the greatest racing sim of all time. It's not for the faint of heart though. Check out the Wiki.
There are a large number of fan made tracks and a few excellent season mods available. There is still a growing community for this game. Which is good, because it can be a struggle to get it working on current computers. The community has done a great job ensuring that it will still work on todays computers.
No, it is based on the 1967 formula one season. There are a huge number of user generated tracks available here, and also mods available for the 1965 and 1969 seasons. As well as an excellent 1967 world sportscar championship mod. You can pick this game up dirt cheap, and enjoy a wealth of tracks and cars, from back when Motorsport was truly terrifying.
There is a huge catalogue of user developed content including support for modern steering wheels. In short, it is the best racing game available.
It is, but IMHO, this is better. If you have any love of F1, historical or present, you should give this a try. Don't let the graphics put you off. Give it a try and find out why this still has a huge community today.
I forgot to mention, one of the best fan made contributions to GPL, is the fact you can now race online.
while that video might entice some, its not representative IMHO. First off, dont know what sound scheme that is but its the worst Ferrari sound I've ever heard. The stock sound and many addons sounds are spine tingling incredible.
Second there are several graphic updates available and bring the sim upto an acceptable level by todays standards, it does support pretty high resolution.
And lastly car setup is a major part of GPL and I'd say the car in the video needs some serious tuning...
