I see people typing this "tree'd" all over the place, and I have no idea where it comes from.

I know what it means. Well, rather, I know when it's used - when someone answers a question (or similar) before you - but what does it mean?

And where did it originate from?

Where you answer a question or post when it's been answered already, usually in the space of time it takes to write the reply, or by not looking at the posts preceeding it.

Example-

Member 1- Hey guise, what colour is a dog?
Member 2- Dogs can be many different colours
Member 3- A variety of colours are possible Edit: Damn, tree'd

It comes from George of the Jungle (watch out for that tree).

Really? Thought it referred more to the way topics used to be arranged on forums... as topic trees.

Basically:

Topic
-Reply 1
-Reply 2
-Reply 3

Then people would answer either the topic or the first order replies... and the Topic would grow like a tree...

Topic
-Reply 1
--Reply 1.1
---Reply 1.1.1
----Reply 1.1.1.1
---Reply 1.1.2
--Reply 1.2
---Reply 1.2.1
-Reply 2
-Reply 3
--Reply 3.1

Very easy to get lost on those old style boards when you get tree'd and the topic splits off and moves on without you. With the linear style more popular nowadays, it doesn't happen as often.

I've always leaned more towards Duke's answer, seems more plausible and it involves cars. :D

I’ve never heard it anywhere other than GTP, so I have no idea where it originates.

Hmmm... kinda leaning towards Duke's answer as well. Most I can find anyone using this term elsewhere is in drag racing discussions.

 I like both mods explanations but I'd mod Dukes.

Ok, you know in the first Fast and the Furious where it's the Supra against the Charger and the charger doesn't quite make it? Tree'D...

Don't you mean... train'd?

Considering that (as far as I know) I was the one who originated its use here, I'd go with my explanation as well...
;)

D'oh! Treed by Sage! In a discussion about treeing! It's a time warp or something!
:scared:

I don't remember if I was kidding or not when I posted my "explanation". I suspect I might have been.

I'd say go with Duke's explanation.

Edit: Doh! Tree'd!

Edit2: Doh! Tree'd on the Tree'd Joke!

Tree'd is used because it's just so much easier than "Damn. You're a faster typer than I am so you got to answer first. You suck." thereby making it a time saving device by Ronco.
