Note: Summary at the end if you don't want a long read. Apologies if this is all completely uninteresting, but it's a discussion I enjoy to think and write about.
When I play MP I don't have the slightest bit of fun on it anymore which is why I stopped playing it.
This is my problem to, I loved COD4 because at the time it was fresh for me the last FPS I played online alot was COD Finest Hour on PS2 which I loved to (discounting Socom 1/2/3 for being 3rd person). I liked World at War as well because it was a fresh experience with the engine and some good ol' fashioned bolt rifles, both had problems but both were good fun at the time. MW2 was still fun because I had a good group to play and banter with, thanks GTP for that, and the frustrations didn't usually stop me from pub stomping and causing more frustration then I would receive and even though it was on the ridiculous side it was still fun. I did prefer Bad Company 2 (due to taste) though I played less of it due to time and lack of people to play with, a game which played alone couldn't really shine because without at least 1 extra gun by your side the impact you could have on a match was vastly diminished.
Blops was a little strange, I really liked it much more than MW2 but after a month or 2 I just started to get fed up of the same old. I never played any of them religiously so I didn't burn out to fast, but even though in my mind I know objectively Blops was the best one for me by being balanced, not to frantic, added a bit more gun skill and so on but subjectively I wasn't enjoying myself any more and it was a little odd. To me Blops felt so right and yet so wrong, had it come out any time before MW2 I would have played it so much more but the simple fact of the matter is I was fed up of the same experience by then. It's not surprising to people that know me that I prefered Blops, I like fast action but MW2 with it's danger close, shotgun secondaries and crazy air support was to far, Blops was more toned down and I loved it for that and were I have to play a COD game now, I'd get Blops.
That leaves MW3 as a game which keeps the same core experience I'm now fed up of and adds or brings back, in comparison to Blops, features I don't want or value on maps I don't like the design of.
I won't lie I haven't played it Having played it finally all my suspicions were on the money for me, because in 2011 I got an alternative so I don't feel the need to buy COD just so I have an FPS to play with friends. I got Battlefield 3.
Unlike the previous incarnation, BF3 provides the same immersion and atmosphere I always loved in a Battlefield game which is something that never really fades because you always feel like a small part of a big picture. This time though I felt like my small part was just as important as any other, alone or with friends, so unlike BC2 I'm free to enjoy it as I want, when I want and not when my friends are online. It allows you to run and gun as much as I personally would ever want to (which BC2 didn't) but doesn't restrict you to it like MW3 seems to but it also allows you to fly a jet, blow things up with tanks, provide true meaningful cover fire with an LMG, storm buildings to flush out a stronghold, dart through an enemy set up in a hummer, provide support from mid range with a battle or assault rifle, provide recon or sniper support from half a mile away, set up an ambush for tanks and troops alike, the list could go on. Sure the control and 'feel' of the game aren't as intuitive as COD, it takes longer to get comfortable with your aim but once you get the glove to fit I'd not have it any other way.
BF3 is a game which you have to put time in to, if you don't have that time to put in, it will never truly reward and there are still reasons to prefer COD depending on the type or shooter experience you want, but if you want to really feel like you're in the battlefield the clue is in the name.

Sorry for the rather long little retrospective for the genre on this generation of consoles, and that's discounting other series I dipped in to I could make a whole thread if I wanted to and give my FPS experience as a whole on PS3.
Long story short COD has been to similar year on year for to long now for me, and I'm the kind of person who doesn't bore easy of something I enjoy, I don't think the 'hate' to either BF3 or MW3 is right as both games are great for their own reasons. The mistake not to make in this thread is treating posts as if people are reviewing games, the title of the thread implies what games which
you have bought were the best or most disappointing and not what was the best or worst game of the year period. The best is not always the same as most popular, MW3 is the worst for many because of the hype that surrounds it even though there are worse games but people go in expecting something incredible and find something else entirely often. Does that mean it's bad? No, but it's not as good as everyone makes it out to be and for that matter BF3 isn't either. For the people who share similar preferences though they both are the best with no alternative.
