I'm speaking hypothetically here.

Let us say the first job is your dream job, something which you look forward doing every day. You have an adequate home and car, but nothing special. This job allows you to pay your bills, feed your family, fill up the gas tank, set aside enough money for your financial well being. However, it does not let you purchase any other luxuries, like a faster, cooler, more comfortable car, or a better TV, or a bigger house.

Now, let us say the second job is something you don't like to do at all. You detest it with all your being. However, the salary is so great you can pay the bills, feed the family, etc... as well as buy as luxurious of things you like. You can buy the Ferrari, own the mansion, drop $3000 for the latest, greatest computer, etc.

What job would you choose?

Thats a good question. I think I would go for the job I enjoy and save up hard for just one thing special and then continue living reasonably comfortable.

I think at a certain point everyone kinda has to make that decision.

I chose my dream job. At first I thought this thread was about what job you'd rather have than the one you're in now - to which I would have replied "there isn't one".

First job by far and away. How would I be able to earn all the money that comes with the second job when I don't bother showing up? ;)

Second job. Work isn't meant to be fun.
That's what makes it work.

Trust Bee to take the easy option.

That depends on your definition of "anything..." Of the two, I might say the second, just because neither job will be something that is exciting to go to every day, but with the Ferrari and some of the luxuries, you could end up having much more fun outside of work. But supposing my dream job happens to pay big bucks as well...

Personally, I would shoot for the middle. You really don't need all of the extras. I would stick with an average sized house, good stuff, but not amazing quality and stick with a 911 yet have a job that is pretty reasonable.

I would go for the middle too or at least a job I did not absolutely detest.

I can't really choose, because the first option isn't that good either. What kind of house, car and TV are we talking about?

Yeah. Are we talking middle class small or lower class, living in a basement small? I assumed a fairly run down kind of place, and a car that doesn't run very well.

My dream job with be working as a egine builder or something similair to that. Just love to get the most out of those things.

Too bad I got neither, as I am a 17 year old bus driver. :grumpy:

I would prefer the second job, almost any job that pays alot is my dream job.

That's similar to the situation im in right now. Ive been workin at an amusement park for the whole summer as a rides operator. The job is fun and all my co-workers are young (18-22) and we have a great time. Its a fun place to work and ive made a lot of friends. But unfortunately, its not a great paying job and its not very opportunistic, especially for a first year university student like me. So im still debating whether i should go back next summer.

But if i had a family that depended on the income, i'd probably go for the second job

First Job, possibly being a Tuner for Nissan
Second Job, a Student because you could always learn something new everyday.

You'd better take the job you enjoy. Money doesn't cure misery, nor does it make you feel better when work sucks. Fortunately, I have the best of both worlds, but the job is harder than snot at the north pole.

I'd rather take the job where I get paid more even though it isn't really anything I want to do. Some might say money won't buy you happiness but I tend to disagree, if you surround yourself with nice things you like I don't see why you can't be happy.

When you look back on what you've accomplished with your life, what you do for a living is a major part of your contribution to humanity. At least, it can be. Generally, people spend a large portion of your waking hours at work - you should like what you do.

Like it or not, a large portion of your identity is tied into what you choose to do with your life. Make it count.

I choose the first job,I think it's better to do someting that you like to do than something that you don't like to do,even if it pays bigger money.
The time passes faster on a job that you like to do than on a job that you don't like to do.
If you do a work only for the money, days can be verry long,so that it looks that you have to work more for your money.

To be honest, the second job. If I get to work and get enough money and stuff, then I can always have time later in life to change my thought or occupation..

the second. I would get as much stuff as possible, like ferraris, save up an absolute huge sum of money, quit, then persue my dream job.

Nice toys make you happy when you're playing with said toys, but it doesn't change how you feel overall.

I would go with the first one. If it is a job that you love, it will make life a lot better. Suppose you take the second job. You hate it but get paid well. Eventually that is going to wear you pretty thin. What good is all that cool stuff gonna do ya if you are in poor health? Maybe I'm crazy, but if it's something I enjoy then the quality of life is going to better. Money can buy a LOT of cool things, but at what real cost?

If I had nice things I would feel pretty good overall. It all depends on the person though, there are individuals out there that care about possessions and then there are those who do not.

Your Health?

My favorite novel ends with the hero tracing a dollar sign with his finger. Even so, I’d much rather take the first job – if you’re going to spend almost half of your waking hours doing something, it ought to be something that you find enjoyable, and something that you’d be proud of when on your deathbed. A job should be (at least partially) an end onto itself, not exclusively a means to an end.

Everyone thinks that, but few people find it to be the case. Once the novelty has worn off, those "nice things" simply become "things", no better and no worse than what you had before. It's hard to believe, but it's true.

A point well-taken. Ask yourself this question: "Can I put up with this for another 30 years?" If you nearly vomit just thinking about it, no salary will compensate.

I'd take option two;

Why? Well, its fairly simple in that jobs aren't necessarily supposed to be "liked" and furthermore, everyone eventually reaches a plateau in which they begin hating something that they enjoy... My guess is that with option one, you'd eventually realize that you can't move forward in life, or get so sick of not being able to enjoy yourself that you eventually quit for "personal reasons."

I'll take the one with better pay, even if I hate it. That way, I can afford to take the month-long vacation with the built up PTO, do whatever the hell I want, and go back to the grindstone doing whatever it is I hate so much. But, just like there is a plateau in which you begin to hate your job, there is a similar place in which your job becomes that much less painful.
