I just ordered a laptop and am not sure if it was the right one. I thought maybe a thread like this would help people decide on a new purchase.

So what laptop do you have, and what are the pros and cons of it?

Alienware M15x :
Pro : Excellent design (my taste) - Pretty good processor and Graphic card - Very solid frame - Nice screen - Nice Gadjet
Cons : A bit heavy - not really travelling friendly (battery last not very long in play mode).

It's perfect for what I used it, mostly when I was at the army, was perfect. I never felt like I needed something more powerfull. I'm not using it that much anymore I have a very good home PC but I still use it from time to time when I go to friends or to my parents home.

Macbook Pro 13 inch:

Pros: Great keyboard, nice-ish screen, and it has pretty good performance without sacrificing on battery life.

Cons: After a year of use, it's battery life has depleted a lot. I only get about 3-5 hours at the most. The same has to be said for performance, applications take much longer to load then before.

Last gen HP Pavillion DV6.

Pros: It's got a big screen and it's, well, a laptop, so it's portable, ish.
Cons: Everything else.

Packard Bell EasyNote TK. Intel Core i3 processor running 7.

Pros: Epic wood texture, good enough size, wide screen, filled with enough technology, came with PSE8 too.
Cons: Resolution makes finding wallpapers hard, graphics don't seem to be great (at least they weren't when I last played Flight Sim X - though the graphics are supposedly HD), also seems a bit slow when gaming.

Thinkpad T410 i5, compact, tough, decent battery life (not great, no pre-sandybridge), tons of input ports, fast - cons, display could be better, battery life could be better, great for traveling and business though, as I mentioned, its very tough.

Macbook Pro 15 i7 - pretty much the opposite of the T410 - not as tough but awesome battery life, and its a Mac, it just works. This has become my primary laptop for work.

Don't game on laptops, so neither of these I would pick for that, although for the titles that work on the Macbook, it should do pretty well given the specs.

U36SD-RX138V

13" i7 4GB 750GB HDD.

I damaged the mouse ZIF connector when upgrading to a SSD

I guess I could have put the one my wife has.

17 inch MacBook pro SSD bought a few months ago
Pros: beautiful screen, really fast, great keyboard, fantastic build quality

Cons: almost 3000$, it's a mac, really week Gpu for the price.

I use to be a Mac fan, until I got a desktop pc and seen what you get for 3000 for the Mac compared to my pc I built. My wife loves macs though so it looks like I'm stuck with them for awhile. I really do love the screen on them though and see why everyone kept telling me they were the best for photographers.

Lenovo G575 on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Pros: Nice HD graphics. Very fast.
Cons: 3 hours battery life :banghead:. No MS Office. :grumpy:

Asus G71GX, running a Core 2 Duo at 3GHz, 6GB of RAM and a 1GB Nvidia GTX260M.

Pros: Good performance (for a three year old laptop), still plays most games decently. Screen is top notch, keyboard is good, has everything I could want from a latop and is portable enough for me, as I wouldn't use one while on a train or anything.

Cons: It's three year old, the battery life is miserable now. It's never had a long lasting battery, but it's down to 1,5 hours when fully charged. Used to be tripple that. The design also looks a bit, you know, kiddy-ish with all the LED lights and whatnot, but that's what a gaming laptop's gonna come with, I guess.

Samsung RV511-A07 running Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit).
It has 3GB of RAM and a dual core i3 processor clocked at 2.53GHz. It also has the basics like bluetooth, WiFi, Webcam, SD card reader, HDMI port, 3 usb ports and a DVD rewriter.

Pros: Light/portable, i3 processor (it's good enough for me), HD Screen 15.6 inch LED, 3-4 hour battery life.

Cons: Mediocre graphics card, 320GB HDD.

It's good enough for me as I game using my PS3, It does most things that I want it to do and it didn't cost a lot either.
:)

Asus NV1VN

Pros: Decent plastic, Palm rest and around the keyboard is covered with a layer of rubber, cool palm rest(heat from GPU and CPU is blocked off), Elan Smart-Pad(two finger control features), Core 2 Quad Q9000(2GHz), Nvidia GT 240M(1GB card), 4GB 1066 DDR3 stock(now 8GB of 1600 DDR3 but FSB of my CPU makes it 1066), Love the design, 2.1 stereo, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I could do 3 hours on the battery during normal computer use(web browsing and Microsoft office). The laptop also came with a good laptop bag I still use today.

Cons: 320GB 7200RPM HDD had to be replaced but I knew of it's condition and it lasted two years(seagate HDD known for failing after 10 months because of hardware ECC being used too much due to firmware. It was easy for me to clone the seagate and move to a 320GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD. Actually is slightly faster and a bit quieter), bright dot and dark dot on LCD screen(never did the 30 day LCD replacement since it never bothered me), and the battery lost 17% of it's full charge and the new HDD took extra power making the battery life 2-2.5 hours max in normal use. If it gets any lower then I'll have to order a replacement.

Laptop has been great even with a few slight problems. It's been 3 years since the OS was installed from the factory, took care of it, and I never had to reinstall Windows 7. I still even have the Asus software on it and I never saw the need to remove the software. Heck some of the software was useful for me and saved me time on finding software. I did have to take the laptop apart to work on the thermal paste after 2 years but it's not a con since that is a good thing to do after so long. Ah, it was fun bringing the laptop to lunch at high school and playing video games.

So to sum it up, good laptop and it is pretty reliable, I still use it for college work despite it being a 17" laptop(6.5lb weight). Battery life is not that bad since it's a 6 cell battery.

HP Pavilion DV6 6b07tx
Intel i7-2760QM
8GB RAM
ATi/AMD HD6770M
1TB HDD
Blu-Ray reader and burner
Full High Definition 15.6" LED LCD display

Pros: Good battery life; excellent performance for the money; lovely brushed-aluminium look, and a beautiful screen to go with it. The extra features on this model are also very handy, like the Blu-Ray burner and USB 3.0 ports; nice and light too compared to some of my older lappys.

Cons: HP's standard pre-installed crapware, especially Norton Internet Security; the Beats Audio nonsense is a bit overrated and the option to turn it off is completely pointless (Why would I want to press a couple of buttons to make my already-crap laptop speakers sound worse and quieter?); no dedicated F-key line (have to press Fn to access the F-keys which is a hassle in a couple of my games)

Dell Studio 15

Pros: -Good battery life, even now after 3 years of heavy use.
-Durable, nothing broken and never needed repair in the 3 years *knock on wood*
-Dedicated graphics card (don't remember exact model) but plays everything to fairly recent games, bad company 2 runs but not great so that's the limitation.

Cons- -Vista
-256 GB HD
-getting dated now
-6+ minute start up time... With almost all started up programs disabled.

Great all round laptop that has met all school and gaming needs for years. It will hopefully last me until I build my desktop in about a years time. I recommend Dell to everybody because of this laptop, it's been great.

Dell XPS M1710

Pros:
-Sturdy as all hell
-Still plays most games that I play pretty well
-Surprisingly good audio quality. Better than any of my friend's laptops
-'Dat screen.
-Obnoxious lights and doodads and things.
-Easy to service and clean, as everything is accessible
-Being the performance version of what was one of the most popular laptops ever a few years ago means parts are plentiful and cheap
-Very functional, with a solid keyboard and big-meaty touchpad buttons

Cons:
-GPU is starting to go (I think)
-Battery life was never particularly good, though it's better with Win 7
-Heavy
-There are some games I would like to play that it can't, and I'm starting to run into multimedia programs where it would be much easier if I had a better one.

I'm currently planning on replacing it, honestly.

wow I'm the only one in a gaming site with an alienware :O /shocked

I thought about getting an origin, but really didn't see myself playing to many games on a laptop when I have a pretty decent gaming pc.

Toronado
When I bought mine, the XPS series ate Alienwares for breakfast.[/comeatmebro]

Yeah for the money even my Studio beat the Alienware series 3 1/2 years ago when I got mine.

Toshiba Satellite est. 2006(maybe 2005)

Intel Centrino

Deep inside I'm actually crying.

Got my new on in the mail today, a Lenova Y570. So far it seems like it will do the job. The screen is pretty bad, and for some reason the shift keys are really small, but the rest of it seems pretty good.
pros;

The feel of the keyboard is great
Build quality seems very good compared to all other laptops(except macs)
Pretty fast so far
Plays SWTOR on high settings around 30FPS
Full keyboard and not that off centered compared to others with a full keyboard.
cons
The shift key is pretty small
Screen looks pretty bad
Only a 5400 HDD

I'm going to download a few games from steam tonight to tryout and see how far I can push the GPU.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook A380.

Pros:

  • Fantastic screen, big resolution and vivid colours.
  • Very comfortable keyboard and is spill-resistant.
  • Good design.
  • Five USB ports.
  • Really long lasting battery (though now it's no longer so).
  • ATI Radeon Graphics.
  • Pretty good performance (able to run rFactor).

Cons:

  • Unsatisfying build quality.
  • Unimpressive reliability.
  • Big and heavy.
  • No DVD burner.
  • Terrible speaker quality.
