What other driving game would be fun?

Well, I still have some races to go in GT3, but I was wondering what to do after this. What other driving games (for PS2, PAL) do you guys own, and how do they measure up to GT3? I really have close to nada experience on this genre of games. Used to have fun with Need for Speed 1 some years ago, but that's about it. From what I've gathered GT3 is regarded by many to be state of the art at this time, so I'm afraid that any other game would be somewhat disappointing.

I would very much like to have a game with force-feedback (have a Logitech wheel) and graphics quality that's not too far behind GT3. If it is rally, F1 or any other class of cars doesn't matter that much, but something like the tuning possibilities we have in GT3 would be nice. Any suggestions?

go out and pick up EA's F1 2001. Make sure not to get any imposters like 989 studio's F1, and of course the 2001 version is better than 2000. You want another real, hardcore racing type expierience on a console, win all the liscenses on that game and run full blown realism. It's pretty badazz. If you have the wheel you definetly won't be dissapointed. Graphics are slightly behind GT3, but they are great none the less. As for NFS1, I'm going to go pick it up for $10, just because it's such a rockin game :) I'm a hardcore 3DO NFS'er from the past ;)
peace,

I forgot to ask, are you really going to be that 'finished' with GT3 when you beat it? IMO it's got endless replay in it, until GT4 comes out anyways ;)

peace,

Not at all :) Its just that I want mooooore. I'm at about 80% and still haven't done the S- license, so there's plenty to go. And. as you pointed out, this game has replayability in tons.

Currently I'm just doing enduros - one each evening. Gets me in a sort of Zen-like state of mind just to blast through the courses round by round. :hypnotize Most often with the F1 cars I have to admit, as they are just so incredible...

I find that I actually learn the courses better, and hence do better with lesser cars after doing them with a F1. Its like with a F1 I can do a course "perfectly", and it then gets fun trying to copy that with another car.

Oh, but I ramble. No I haven't "finished" GT3. And I will definetly try out EA's F1 2001 as you suggested. Many thanks.

i bought WRC the other day...haven't touched it ever since, blah blah blah blah blah.

every1 is talking about how good this game is but i think it s*cks (censorship crap) *ss!!! (more censorship crap)

If you haven't tried it, I think Grand Prix Legends is one of the best driving games. Think of 1967 F1 cars, 400 hp, no wings and hard skinny tires. It was released a few years ago, and no the graphics don't compare to GT3. But for gameplay, it is without equal. Excellent physics model (you can flip the cars), full garage with component tuning, and some of the best F1 tracks before they were made 'safer'. It is for the PC though.

I haven't had a chance to try WRC yet. It's on my rental list. Also, I remember when the old school F1 came out, wanted to try it but never got around to it. Out of what I have played, I will deem GT3 and EA's F1 2001 the best racing sims I've ever played.(Grand Touring or whatever on the PC is a blast too, but my friend ruined it by downloading a trainer. I didn't see much replay value after that for some reason)

I think you should try Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero, I love that game. Call me crazy....

Anyone have Le Mans 24 Hours, for PS2? and if so, how is it? I really like the GT class of cars and am pretty interested in this game, but i would like some GT3 players feedback on it :D
and umm...wuts WRC??

I haven't played it but I've been reading alot of reviews on it since X-mas time. (saw it at the mall and thought about buying it). Apparently it's not quite as good as GT3, of course, but a great game none the less. I've read that the modeling of the cars makes them somewhat easier to drive than the GT series, but not so much that it's like driving any typical arcade kind of game. Also they said there's some cool effects like more real smoke off the tires and so on. (that gets thicker and trails into the sky) The 24 hour race sounds fun too, given a wheel, lots of sleep and heavy doses of caffiene ;) Graphics are said to be decent but not up to GT3 standards. I'd like to see, first person, the night to day and day to night transformations.. Just figured I'd share what I've read so far..
peace,

thanx for the info mason. i actually just read a review over at gamespot. they seemed to enjoy it. i took a thorough look at the pics they had, and well. blech. i didn't dig em at all. the cars looked really crappy (mostly) and that happens to be wut i care most about. i would do with less detail to the tracks (trees and bull****) for better looking cars. but man, alot of the cars look like they were made for a freeware game! and yet, it still sounds like a fun game. i think i will have to rent this one, or hear some first hand impressions of the graphics. im not expecting GT3 or anything, but atleast some nice looking cars!

np. yeah, I was somewhat unimpressed with the pics I looked at as well. It was out the other day when I was near the rental shop.. Let me know if you get a chance to pick it up.

Damn! im really getting bummed out. im 92.5% complete with GT3, and im sure i will be playing it for some time to come (especially since im getting the Diablo GT next week or so). But, i really want another driving game to play, and after playing GT3 they all just seem so crappy! I still play NFS hot pursuit and high stakes on the PC because, well they are just downright fun shtuff. And i also play SuperBike 2001 quite a bit, and it's pretty sw33t with the DualShock2 hooked up to the PC. But i need something new! i checked out F1 2001, and i would rather get the PC version then PS2, but the pics are not very interesting. And i would expect a PC game to atleast be on par with GT3. But GT3 just blows them all away, when are we gonna se somfin as good or better? I dont want to wait till GT4/wutever for some more lovin dammit! as for rally/stockcar/trucks, blech. not my kind of racing 😈 and has anyone noticed how NO other raceing game, and i mean NONE have tires that are round, like in GT3? How hard is it to make some damn circles? i never realized how pathetic looking PC games really are untill i played GT3, with such a low res and WAY lower specs it just totally blows my mind. in some ways, i wish i never bought it.....nahhh :D

NFS hot persuit 2 should be coming out. I'm sure that will be fun. alhtough I wish they would make a 2001 version of the original NFS, that was a classic) I'd advise to go rent f1 2001 and try it out, the graphics are pretty decent when you're movin! (I think they look aight when not, but even better when..) We've all just got spoiled by GT, as you said ;)

Yea, your right. and im probably gonna pick up NFS hot pursuit 2, as im sure that will be mucho fun. maybe i should pick up a wheel/pedal combo instead of worrying about getting a new game. who knows, might make me want to start GT3 all over from the begining. cause g-d knows i cant STAND the thumbsticks, even though i would never drive anyother way (except the wheel)

yeah, I'm thinking the same, after I pick up one of the GT3 forcefeedback wheels my two driving sims will be re-born. I would already ahve it but I need to get my real car fixed first, LOL. As for NFSH2, the graphics look like typical NFS stuff. (like the last versions out) I"m sure it will be pretty cool when you're playing and there's plenty of cool lighting effects etc. that they now have at their disposal with this platform. I would be willing to bet the cars will feel too arcadish compared to the GT series, but it's a those games are fun anyways. especially in multiplayer. NFS1 was the only one to capture what a real car is like. Too bad they didn't stick with it :( (stages are great too, just need more of em)

Yea, i had purchased NFS SE for PC many many years ago :D
i was totally in love with that game, and then i picked up a flight sim and forgot all about racing games until GT1 came out. been an addict ever since.

I don't really think there are such a thing as a circle when it comes to digital 3D modelling. Rather it is a fine grained polygon with many straight edges; the more edges (and hence more information that has to be processed) the more like a circle, or in this case a cylinder, it looks. I think. :Propeller

quite right. its not a true circle/cylinder. but it sure does the job of looking like one! :p
and its a mesh of faces/polygons. the more faces/polygons = greater detail and a truer to life shape. and yes it more data, but even so. is it that hard to do? i cant claim to be even a low class modeler, but give me a week at the most and i bet i could whip up a tire better then most games out there. and these guys get payed for wut they do!

If you are lookin for an arcade racer, I would recommend Ridge Racer V, or if you already have that one, maybe Burnout - 'cos it's bloody fast !

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! No offense but what is it about that game that is appealing to anybody? the "hot" chick, lol. I guess it's got clear graphics but its modeling is, IMO, HORRIBLE. The cars do not at all drive like real cars. Then there's the simple fact that they were too cheap to get liscenses to put real cars in the game so they have to make civic and 3000gt etc. wannabee cars. I have to admit the ability to get different engines and preview them is a bit cool, but that's not enough to sell a game to me. That was the only game I bought with my PS2 last summer, because I couldn't find any other decent looking games to get with it, I hated it from day one and it's the only game in my collection that I do not play and am slightly embarassed to own. Maybe I'm just picky but I give Ridge Racer V :thumbsdow :thumbsdow .

I just browsed alt.games.video.sony-playstation2 and there was this guy complainig about not getting the Logitech Force Feedback Wheel to work properly with EA F1 2001. Maybe the wheel's got nother name, but its the one which got pitched as "official GT3 wheel". He claimed there were different opinions about it; some say F1 doesn't support USB wheels at all, other say it does except for the gear paddles.

So any of you own both and can set this straight?

no, but I can add to the confusion ;) I've read a reputable review or two that strongly suggested using that particular wheel for the game.. that helps nothing I guess but I figured I'd throw it in. (that and it'd better work well because I'm gonna get me one!)

Yeah - I think it's been out since the start of december (In europe anyway) You might want to check it out....here's a review:

Masonholmes - You don't like RR5 ? Fine !
But don't complain about the cars, because it was never planned that there should be any real cars in the game anyway- in fact, in all the ridge games they have never used real cars, so if you were lookin for a sim instead of an arcade racer - - well you should have known...

If you only want race games with real cars, you must absolutely HATE GTA3, Burnout and about a zillion of other games that use fake cars...

...and out of arcade racer games, I will rank it at the bottom of the todem pole, (for too many reasons to list). All it's got going for it, (as far as I'm concerned), are clear graphics. Anybody wanna buy it off me? Looks brand new. The last time I was offered $2 for it I told them that I would rather watch it burn. :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:
