Today reading one of my favourite competition blogs to see what continued to happen with the Monte Carlo rally this week (I don't remember the name of the category, but I do remember they run with S2000 cars. I think it's the IRC) I found out a very ridiculous report.

Apparently, one of the racers that was giving Mikko Hirvonen some trouble and was running strong, Sebastien Ogier, lost control of his car in a corner. His Peugeot 207 S2000 was using slick tires which suited the actual conditions on the road, but then some buffoons threw snow on the road. Heres the video of what happened:

So, rally fans, what not to do: Be a 🤬 and ruin the race for a driver. It doesn't matter if he's coming first or last, he's doing a terrific effort and giving his best out there, the least he wants is that a pile of idiots ruins his job.

What to do: In case unfortunate stuff like this happens, do like the fans that helped that EVO X out there, help it go back to the track. I'm sure the driver would be very thankful.

Seriously, that thing those 🤬 did, making the track even more dangerous than it is already, is just irresponsible and idiotic. I hope they're used as dummies for Jeremy Clarkson to review the Subaru Impreza WRX :grumpy:.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it's nothing new.

The Col de Turini, which forms part of the route, typically includes ice and snow at the time when the rally is raced - and spectators have been known to throw extra snow onto the road. In 2005, both Marcus Grönholm and Petter Solberg lost wheels and crashed into a wall on the infamous Col de Turini stretch. Although Marcus Grönholm was able to continue the race, Petter Solberg was forced to retire.

I know that incident wasn't over the Col de Turini. Do you have evidence the snow wasn't there when Hirovenen went through?

Apparently I wrote my paragraph all wrong since Hirvonen wasn't the one with problems, it was Sebastien Ogier. I've heard somewhere else that rally "fans" do it all the time, but I just find it a terrible lack of respect to the drivers effort and a disregard to their safety. Sure, it might make competition more interesting but at what cost?

About the evidence, I'm looking for it now ;).

The alternative is strictly forcing spectators no where near the course, which would be a crying shame, its stupid but there isn't much to do about it without punishing the majority for what a stupid minority do.
I suppose you could look at it as one of the "hazards" of the stage - not that I agree with or condone such behaviour.

Found evidence so Daan is happy ;).

From the IRC website:

Ford´s Mikko Hirvonen has gone quickest again on SS3 to give the all-new Fiesta (pictured) a 35-second lead of the Monte Carlo Rally over Peugeot´s Stephane Sarrazin. His team mate Sebastien Ogier lost more than two minutes after damaging a wheel, which he said was because of snow placed on the racing line by spectators. Skoda´s Juho Hanninen and Peugeot´s Kris Meeke are currently equal third.

I hope it helps clarifying something.

Daan wasn't asking for proof about Ogier's incident. He was asking for proof that Hirvonen didn't meet the same problem - was snow there when Hirvonen tackled the same piece of road?

Any attempt to modify or change a road during the course of a race should be met with criminal charges. Another spectator, or the driver himself could die as a result.

I've been to many tarmac rallies and it's not uncommon at all for fans to throw dirt on the track to promote drifting/sliding.

It's the responsibility of the 0, 00 and 000 cars to supervise the track prior to running it and giving their okays prior to the stage starting out. It is the responsibility of the track marshals to keep the track up to the same standards approved by the 0's cars and to notify race direction or whoever it is that decides if the stage should go on or if it represents a hazard.

This is commonplace in the Baja 1000 race for years with spectators laying traps for the cars at over 100mph just for some entertainment. I in no way condone this act, its stupid, if a marshal did the same and something happened he would be up for manslaughter same as the mechanics if a wheel comes off during a race and it kills someone and its proven that it was their fault its a criminal charge. it should be the same for these morons
