What tracks are good to practice braking distances?

I'm really wanting to stop using aids and drive like a pro. How can I do that?

pick a simple track you know and practice. When you learn how to brake without abs on simple corners, then try a more difficult track where you can practice braking while cornering and with fast changes of direction. Then eventually move up to the 'ring'.

Try on the toyota 86 to start with and progress.

Remember to alter the brake bias with no abs. Too much on the rear compared to the front and you will lock up and spin. I start with F4 - R2 then go from there. Others start with F3- R0 and go from there.

At least 95% of online race rooms use ABS ..

If you want to ditch all the other aids, that is great I recommend it. But unless you want to join a No ABS league there is really no point in learning to drive without it. Its considerably slower vs. Abs on and you'd be handicapping yourself

ABS=0 is a fun area. If you wish to get good at it you need to practcie a bit, find the edges of the frcition circle of the car - all those fun things you get driving the car (Rather than letting the car drive you arround the track)

I'd pick a simple track at first - You are after consistency above all. Once you can lap a track 6 times within a second of each other then you can move on to improvements.

Grand Valley has some pretty basic corners - you should know it well and those deep long stops into the Hairpins will give you several points where you can feel the balance of the car.

Maybe best to start on Softer tyres and stick the ghost up. Try to be smooth, use track side opbjects as brake points.

At first brake very early - You are after clean laps.
Then brake a little bit deeper each lap, (Up to the point you used to brake with ABS enabled)

As you get closer to this brake point you will feel the car skip about and get nervous as you try to get all the braking done in time.

Now this may seem crazy but an A Spec enduro could be a nice place to learn ABS driving - Get a car that can win a few grades of Softer tyres - so if the race goes badly you can revert to soft tyres to catch back up.

Get the RA controls on your wheel/controller so you can adjust the Brake Bias and ABS TCS in a race.

Have fun and build your speed up.

ABS 0 community where are you???

A good track in my opinion : Monza, the 1st chicane is a great place to practice braking from high speed, don't pump the brakes, do a threshold braking, apply high brake force from high speed and gradually decrease it as the car slowed down, modulate the brake as necessary. The rest of the track is also great.

You can also visit my no ABS video thread, link on my sig, they might give you some pointers on when to brake and how the braking can done at the same level as when ABS enabled.

It is hard to master but the reward is immense, it's also a whole new experience where you are no longer depending on the game to give help in controlling the car.

I'm learning too. Was taking a break from league racing and decided to give it an extended trial period. Ryk mentioned running Aspec events to start. I make my own Arcade races for 10-15 laps, start in last and work my way through the field. Fuji, Nurb GP and GVS are good tracks to learn threshold and trail braking with pro level AI. I started with pretty easy beginner cars-Mazda Roadster street and the TC.

Me and a couple friends ran for a couple hours with ABS 0 this afternoon using the Roadster TC fully stock on SS's. That's an easy ride without ABS, fun car to pitch around with a great cockpit view. It definitely adds a whole new dimension to GT5 in my opinion-just what I needed to get re-energized.

Monza is a great track to improve your skills, you end up at full throttle for 60% of the track and hitting the brakes hard every time. If you learn good braking distances you'll literally shave seconds off your lap times.

Correct that most rooms use ABS...so learning to drive without ABS is usually for your own driving pleasure and to add another element to the game. I have driven and race without ABS, done some TT's without ABS and it really does change the entire experience of GT5. There is no mindless driving without ABS, you are constantly on your toes. The reward and satisfaction of running laps as fast as you can with ABS is tremendous.

My suggestion for a car track combo to begin to learn how to drive without ABS is Tsukuba with a car around 400pp on CS tires. Speeds are lower so there is less braking, the track is flat so you don't yet have to learn to deal with the altered grip and braking while cresting a rise or a cambered corner. From there work up to Monza, Nurb GP/D for some faster but mostly flat tracks. From there, Trial Mountain and Deep Forest to get used to braking with undulations and while cornering or off balance...then you're ready for the 'Nurb:idea:

I tend to run BB's of 2-4/0 but I know some guys run higher numbers. Depends a lot on the tires too, as grippier tires will take higher numbers all around. Find what you feel comfortable with. And don't get hung up on the "0". 0/0 doesn't mean no braking as in the World of PD 0 does not = 0. Try 0/0 and you'll see what I mean. Consider 0 more like 1 so 2/0 is more like 3/1 which would be close to a real life brake bias.

Shameless plug >>> If anyone is interested, below you will find a link to the Parity League where we qualify cars to meet a certain lap time, not a PP or HP/Weight standard, so everyone shows up being able to run the exact same lap time making for the closest possible racing. Most of us don't use ABS, and in this case, if you qualify without ABS, you are instantly competitive because you qualify based on the lap you can run without ABS. Drivers using ABS will be running the exact same lap times as you.

To OP if ur having trouble, any Type II corner or basically any corner leading from a main long straight will do for the most part. These types of corners are designed to focus on optimizing the most out of your brakes and can usually be found in the 1st corner of the majority of tracks

Not new to GT, but what is the deal with all aids turned off? The only "aid" I use is ABS set at 5 or less, if you want to call it a driving aid as mostly all cars today have at least ABS. The classic cars obviously don't have ABS in which I turn aids off which makes them definitely expert level cars and very challenging to drive on the edge with less than race tires!

I'm just going to say that having ABS at anything higher than 1(if it's on) is pointless as it won't help anymore from locking up, it will just increase your stopping distance.

Motegi Road Course is a good track to learn braking points.

Agreed. The ultimate one would be of course the all mighty Nurburgring Nordschleife

I would say Nordschleife is the ultimate goal but not a place to start if you are looking to learn. If you want to learn on Nordschleife, though, then AMG Academy is the away to go.👍

The deal is everyone has an opinion and a preference on how they enjoy playing GT5. Play it and enjoy it your own way, same as everyone else.

Higher ABS settings do lead to incrementally small improvements in braking. In trying to qualify for the GTP WRS for example, I had my best times with ABS at 10 and brake balances of 7/10. I haven't tested it thoroughly but anecdotally it seems to have more effect with stickier tires.

Good on you, but be aware some Real World racing formulas allow ABS anyway.

If last nights update rumours are true, that the old offline physics are now online physics, driving without ABS just got slightly easier.👍

I'd say Monza for braking from high speed and, of course, the Ring for more technical training.

dear OP and readers, whatever track you wish to choose to learn braking distance, I beg and please, that you do not use the vehicle in front of you, as a tolerated buffer to come in knowingly 40 mph faster than normal.
