It wasn't being denied to my knowledge, fully automatic gearboxes were the thing last year, you could frequently see drivers tuning the gear for the next corner via a control on the wheel, the commentators discussed it quite a few times. We're back to semi-automatic this year.

I've started using MT in my Polyphony001 and so far, I'm still 6 tenths off my best time. I feel like I have more control in some corners because I can regulate speed through acceleration, but I'm finding it harder to balance the car with brake and acceleration as I used too, I'm busy concentrating on gears. Once it becomes more natural I hope I'll get better. It does seem to have the potential to be faster, I get better drive and acceleration most of the time, I'm just struggling to keep the car smooth and I'm especially bad under deceleration.

Manual all the way .
If I chose automatic accidentally my finger will still press R2 to shift when I hear the car go near red line... it's a reflex. since I also drive manual in real life

MT All the WAY!!! I'll tell you right now, that if you haven't learned... learn. Having trouble getting golds in AT... switch and watch your times drop. The problem is the AT is not as smart and efficient in terms of shifting and you often lose speed or escape the car's powerband (the range of rpms with the most acceleration) when not utlizing the MT. This can result is losing precious seconds (and in license tests, fractions of seconds) you need to be a GT star. If you look at sites like GT3times.com you'll see how the majority of fast times are done with MTs. After switching to MT, i started crushing my previous bests in AT and became a cleaner driver (less banging, better feel for the line) which will be key for GT4.

Also, that "500 rpms above the redline" theory is a major generalization. Each car differs as to optimal RPMs to shift up and down at. There are other factors such as wheelspin in different gears that also come into play, especially in terms of shifting in and out of corners.
^^ These are wise words. Read them!

And damn, if only for the pure pleasure of it, learn how to use MT! You really don't know what your missing if you use AT...
