I found some off-topic posts in other threads about this, so I wondered why not to start a thread about it. I ran a search, but couldn't find any dedicated thread.

For me it all started when I got Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II for the Sega Megadrive (aka Genesis in some parts of the world) when I was about 9 years old. I played it for years. It had a pretty addictive 'Carreer mode', 19 tracks (although only 16 available in during the carreer mode), rain races and above all, a handshake from Ayrton Senna himself when you clinched the World Title :sly:

That would be this...

If memory serves it was a family Christmas gift in 1978. (I was 7 at the time).

And for the record, as you can probably tell, it was also my first person shooter... ;)

On the VideoPac...:O

Complaining 'bout graphics, huh!!!:sly:

Porsche Challenge on the Playstation.

Mine is GT2 and Side by Side Special if memory serves correctly. :)

EDIT: For those that did'nt know the second game I mentioned about:

Pole Position, on the only machine that did it justice: the Atari 800XL. On cassette at first, then changed to the cartridge version. Seeing the title screen appear as soon as you switched the machine on....man, happy days.
Remember that scene in the movie DARYL where they speeded it up to make it look like he was playing the game like some sort of god? Well that's how good I was at it!!

Microprose Grand Prix 2 for PC. Started playing this when I was 3 years old. Pedals were mounted on a cardboard box so I could reach them, I raced no driving aids on except auto gearbox. I played GP2 for years and years then moving onto GP3 and GP4. To this day I still love the Geoff Crammond Grand Prix games. They were just fantastic.

Top Gear for the SNES

I still play it even today. The best I could do was get pass the first country and may be the first race of the second country. The best I can do now is up to the second country. Though I only really play it for the thrill of fast cars and the music. The music is a major part of the game. If you don't believe me then listen to this:

Just so many memories from when I could barely understand how to play it. I remember running out of gas and asking my brother to move my car whenever he would speed by during a 2 player race.

First racing game... Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit. I could spend hours playing that game, mainly on the PC, but also on the PS1 after we got one. In fact, just now, I got a flood of nostalgia. I felt something distant, yet familiar. I remembered playing NFS, then looking outside when I was four. Ever so fleeting, but solid.

Night Driver, that is if the question was, what was the very 1st driving game I played not owned?

Played/owned doesn't really matter. I just wanted to see 'where it all started' for all of you guys :)

My first racing game was Nigel Mansell's World Championship Challenge on the NES.

So cool. That must be one of the first 'home racing rigs' in the world 👍👍👍

I know I owned racing games before this one, on the mega drive, but the first game I actually remember playing and loving was Total Drivin'. It changed my life.

God it looks terrible now though.

The first racing game I ever played was "World Rally 2", an arcade rally game by Spanish developer Galeco.
