GTPlanet, granted that scenario play has been confirmed, what would you want in a GT4 scenario? A racing scenario would have to include something related to offense, defense, or trouble (the scenario categories for Nintendo 64's "F1 World Championship"). Then, you are given the storyline and an objective to clear. So when it comes to scenarios in GT4, what would you want?

As the creator of this thread and as a voice of opinion, I'll start.

I know I can't go through something like this without having Nurburgring Nordschliefe mentioned, so I'll start with this scenario: "While racing the Fina McLaren at Nurburgring Nordschliefe, the driver was fatigued and started making critical errors. These errors included missing crucial braking points, slipping off the road, and worst of all, banging into competitors. The McLaren racer eventually finished 6th. Your Mission: rewrite history by taking the lead and the race win with one lap to go!"

So if you want [realistic] scenarios in GT4, what would they be? Reply now and come up with realistic scenarios (in other words, no "take down a Toyota GT-One at Super Speedway with a stock Mazda Carol" or anything like that) for GT4.

This topic has been created out of interest from PD's Press Release on GT4 as seen in this CLOSED topic: (https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49571). So if you want to talk about what kinds of challenges you want in mission races, reply now!

From the closed topic featuring PD's press release on GT4, here's the specific part on the "Mission Races":

"A New Proposal to Racing: 'Mission Races'
This is a new concept to the Gran Turismo series, structured in a mission-clearing-based race event. The race will not necessarily start from the starting grid. There will be set conditions for the start of the race for players to challenge. For example: a player may have to start one second later in second place, starting one lap behind and having to finish first. These are settings which are highly likely in the worlds of real racing. Players experience the drama of racing, and are sure to enjoy the challenge of clearing each mission."

Okay, that was just a little side note on this deal. So go ahead and reply.

If it was Homer Simpson driving the mission would be make up 1 lap due to stopping for 1 Duff bear.

Or if it was Jim Richards Driving at Bathurst 2004 it would be make up 1 lap due to pit stop to fix car after hitting Kangaroo. (True Story).

If it was a le mans style race where there are more than one driver the senario could be as follows: Your co driver pits from 5th place, 30 seconds behind the leader with 15 laps to go. You jump in and have to get the front. Depending on the track and/or the AI's ability it could be quiet challenging.

For example 30 seconds in 15 laps of the Super speedway with "fast opponents" would close to impossible. However, 30 seconds in 15 laps of the Nord would be easy. It's all in the details really.

Another idea like Pharaoh's above would be, that you're in a car that's leading, but has a mechanical problem...

A) Maybe it's dropped a gear and you have to nurse it home, whilst still winning the race. This would involve you having to slightly change your driving style and the lines you take around the track.

B) It could involve a problem that's slowly reducing your cars speed, you could either try to get the car home to win...

or pit get the problem fixed, but you come out behind a car/s, thus in a limited amount of laps you must catch and pass them for the win...

I suspect the 'missions' will be very much along the lines of some of the licence tests in prologue where, for example, you have the Fina Macca at Fuji and have ten laps to chase down and pass 5 other cars, without hitting any of the cars or leaving the track at all. I found these types of tests very useful, and made me a better GT driver, even after playing GT1, GT2 and GT3 extensively for years.

OK here's an idea:

"The current World Championship season is drawing to an end and the wide-eyed hopefuls in their rookie year driving for lower are looking to make it big. Catch the eye of the major teams by finishing on the podium." (Naturally, the top three drivers at the beginning of the race are way more powerful than you by about 100bhp.)

OR (similar scenario)

"After a less-than-admirable year in the World Championships you are still hoping to catch the eye of a major team. Car X has been your main rival all year and has signed on to racing in the premier leagues. Prove the selectors wrong by beating him." (In this one, it doesn't matter what your final position is, just so long as you beat the rival car, who, naturally is first or second on the road; the ten-second penalty rule means if you try and knock him out, you'll lose.)

I also like hellnback's ideas.

"It is the year 2090, earths gone BAAAADDDD. Your 900 bhp gto twin turbo has guns on it, and you must kill a million zombies. GO!"

How bout "Your 30sec ahead on the nurb with 10 Laps left but your driving a Viper GTS-R and the guy behind you is in a Toyota GT1." and maybe if you win it unlocks reverse lights.

or those little vanity lights you get around passenger mirrors?

I've NEVER had such a laugh in all the forums I have seen!!!!! More realistically though, how about having to nurse a car home from first place with an over-heating problem and having to short-shift to keep the temps. down.

Here's a situation (for the Las Vegas Drag Strip):

"Here you are in your '68 Camaro. A few hundred yards ahead of you, there's a '67 Mustang. When he flashes his lights, you both start racing towards eachother. The first one to chicken out loses."

How's about this...

"Your mission is to translate GT4 and deliver it to shops before Christmas."

Or if the DeLorean is in the game...

"Go back in time and remind Kaz that he needs to develop a PAL version too."

Some "driver change" situations would be good, as previously mentioned.

What would be cooler is if there are actual historical situations you have to duplicate or reverse. Like (I'm not good with auto racing history, so I can't think of a lot), Monaco GP '96: Survive. You know, take an actual situation that occured in some auto race, and put the player in one of the key positions to duplicate or reverse the result.
They are, after all, focusing on the history of cars, so why not of racing as well?

best post ever award goes to yeti!!!!!

but anyone remember f1 2000 on ps one you used to have a scenario mode like your in a minardi at interlagos running 6th in a wet race about to pick up much needed points for the team when the car spins at turn 2 and you drop to 10th regain your positon before the end of the race

or

your at imola in a ferrari and your leading by 20 secs with 10 laps to go your blow your tyre at the bottom of the hill make it back to the pits and win the race ( this will cost you 25-30 seconds in time)

or

how about your at the bathurst 1000 and your front grille is blocked by plastic bags used to hold the vast amounts of beer being consumed by the fans. the readitor is blocked water tempreture soars to with in 1 degree of boiling point , bring the car home in frist place

( true story ms you legend)

I`d agree with what TheCracker said, that the "missions" will be like the purple section in Prologue, or in other words, just glorified license tests. All of the previous license tests are basically just, "Get from A to B in xx:xx." right? Sometimes its just a section of tract, sometimes a lap or more. Well, the new types of test in Prologue are;

-Get from A to B in xx:xx, with one or more cars in between you. You cannot touch the car.
-Pass a certain car, and stay ahead for 10 seconds, in xx:xx. You cannot touch the car.
-Move from not-first to first within x laps. You may not touch any of the cars.
-Drive a certain distance, while having a certain fuel-efficiency rating, within xx:xx. (For the Prius)

I`d be pretty surprised if it turns out to be much more than just that. They can be a lot of fun though, certain more fun than simple license tests. Since sometimes races end up being pretty uneven, the missions will be able to provide you with a challenging racing scenario every time. The one mission that Cracker mentioned, 10 laps in the McClaren on Fuji Speedway, is a blast and still worth playing after you`ve gotten a gold on it. How many license tests have you gone back to after getting a gold?

No no no: Survive Spa '98! About ten-twelve cars were eliminted before the hairpin, La Source, in a massive accident in the wet. Just think, you start from sixth after a spin in the warm-up and when you get to the hairpin ... the objective is to finish lap 1.

Even somethign along the lines of the weather has changed, and your cars setup is now wrong, finish the last 2 laps in the lead. or along those lines of a reqally badly handling car (almost a drift contest, where you have to go fast but stay in control, while mostly sideways due to the car)

These are some nice ideas you all have. This is all about using your imagination and thinking about REALISTIC situations. However, I will credit Code_kev's rather unreal mission. Here are three scenarios in the categories of offense, defense, and trouble:

OFFENSE: (based on my GT history) "During the Special Stage Route 11 Endurance, the Honda Kunimitsu NSX passed a hard-charging Mitsubishi 3000GT in an upset victory. Rewrite history on Lap 29 of 30 by getting the 3000GT back on the correct track and beat the Kunimitsu NSX."

DEFENSE: "During a Formula GT race at Tokyo R246, you play as a well-respected Japanese racer from Tokyo, Japan. Behind you some 5 seconds behind, a relentless American racer is chasing you down into Turn One. Your mission: it's the final lap, so defend your position and make sure you win the race for your home crowd and home country. Can you do it?" Then it can be called "Hometown Hero" or "Home-Field Advantage."

TROUBLE: "The leader of the Laguna Seca 200 was dominating the race in his Sauber Mercedes. You are a up-and-coming Californian named Nathan Kirkpatrick. Take advantage of the leader's mistakes. You will start after making your final pit stop. First, get your lap back to acquire second place. Afterwards, take advantage of the leader's pit stop, and pass him for the lead. But be warned, the leader is hungry for victory and will do anything in his power to stop you from winning over him. Play this one carefully.

More ideas? Think about what you can handle in a Gran Turismo race. So if you can't win a race by a holeshot or outbraking, don't include it. So hit me up, already, eh?

New scenario idea... "In 2003 at Fuji, there was an exciting finish between two Toyota GT500 teams. It was a battle between the WoodOne and the Esso Ultraflo Supras. If not for a rather controversial finish, the WoodOne Supra would have won. Here, rewrite history by defeating the Esso Ultraflo Supra with only one lap to go."

Come on now, people. Give out your ideas!

'In the Deep Forest 24 hours, you are second in the Sauber Mercedes with 30 minutes to go. You are 25 seconds behind the leading 787B and just set the fastest lap of the race so far, but you just lost 5th gear. Adapt your driving to get around this problem and catch the leader to win."

"It's the closing stages of the Seattle 100 Mile Endurance Race. Having lead from the start, a costly error meant you have made one more Pit Stop than anticipated to fix a puncture. You have so far managed to regain the lead, but with six laps to go, your team tells you the news: you have used up all your allocated tyres. At this rate, your current set will be spent in five laps and second place is fast apporaching. On ever-diminishing rubber, survive the next six laps to win the race."

Pits would naturally be close to stop you going in.

Wow, this is fun. Now here's a different variation because instead of the closing moments of a race, this one relates to the BEGINNING of a race. There was a scenario in "F1 World Championship" which featured a beginning action. So here's another scenario:

"After crossing the bridge at Special Stage Route 11, the Kunimitsu NSX spun out at the very slow right corner. Another car tagged the NSX while trying to make some effort to recover. This happened at Lap 1 of this race. Suddenly, with a full head of steam and extreme concentration, the NSX climbed from the bottom of the barrel all the way to 1st Place. Recreate this miraculous comeback."

By the way, this was based on a demonstration video in "Gran Turismo 1."

"you are half-way through the 24hr Yaris race of champions at the high-speed ring, you are currently in 4th place, six laps down on the leader. Unfortunatly you are stuck in 3rd gear. Try to finish the race without resorting to self-mutilation to pass the time.

While creative, most of your scenarios all involve the exact same elements: Make up for lost time, or keep someone else from making it up and passing you. I'm not too concerned about the variations of the "storyline" between the different events, that's just fluff to me if it doesn't have any impact on some sort of character developement long term.

However, the ideas that delt with poorly functioning vehicles sound very fun. Losing a gear, driving on bald tires, limiting rpms due to overheating, running on brakes that are overheating and have begun to fade, etc are all really imaginative ideas that would add an enjoyably different spin to a race, IMO.

This would be entertaining to me, because it's not the same thing over and over: Drive the car without mistakes. Instead, it would be forcing you to drive the car differently than you normally would, rather than as perfectly as you can. It would almost be like driving a completely different car, because you'd have to adjust your style. No more, "Oh, I drive the Cobra all the time, I know exactly how to get the most out of it." It would be a whole new challenge. :D

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

I would just like to say that most of the scenarios I have read sounds like the Weapon Mastery found in Soul Calibur II. SCII's mission would give you a scenario and then go like "You are poisened by a snake and this opponent stands in your way of the antidote! Finish him before you DIE!" stuff like that :O Just a thought 👍

As for mission racing, I can suggest something but it will sound like the idea in Soul Calibur II's Weapon Mastery mode. The missions are pieces that will make up an entire storyline. You are to do the missions in order of course so the story would make sense. Each mission will continue overtime as your instructer will teach you valuable techniques of how to do many things such as when to shift and when to pass an opponent. So the missions are basically there to teach you REAL life techniques of how track racers do things.

The story can could be about you as a young adult about the age of 20ish who never got a chance to EVER get in a racing school. One day, you brought your beatened up car and just try to get the best lap times you can out of that car. During your challenge, another car joins you and challenges you to a race. You are intimidated that your opponents car is a Z06 Corvette, but that didn't make you refuse the race as he says "Are you sure you want to race?"

So you race! :O Toward the end of the race, you realize that you were able to keep up with this Z06 Corvette somehow with your 300 HP car. Although you lost by several bus length toward the end, you feel proud of yourself. Little did you know that you were SPOTTED by a Polyphony Digital driver recruiter who is looking for a young racer to train and represent Sony's racing team.

LET THE MISSION FOR A DREAM COME TRUE UNFOLD! :O:O:O

A typhoon rumbles toward the mainland two days before the JGTC championship race at Fuji. The night before, as you lounge in the protective depths of the hospitality spread, you contimplate the pressures you will face as you cram sushi down your pie hole and wash it down with hot tea.

The next day, you emerge from your suite and discover that the storm has severely damaged all but 6 of the cars that were to race! Fortunately, yours is one of the remaining. The debris from the storm is cleared off the track, and the race gets under way.

Mission: Take advantage of the smaller, 6 car field and turn your dismal qualifying performance into a podium finish!
