This discussion we're having.
Yes we are!
I'm not imagining it.

I'm not bored, you must be.
No, YOU!
Oh don't be silly, i'm not pretending to talk to someone because i'm bored, i'm doing it because... ... i ... er... ... ... um .... .............

:grumpy:

To summarise: Clean, green and the South Island is heaps more beautiful than the North. :p

Hardly much worse than your thread.

For those who don't know:

Their (money) notes are made out of plastic. Ingenious.

Their 50c coins are round IIRC (crazy ). And their 20c coins are the same shape and size as ours, so we can use them in our vending machines, and due to the Aussie dollar being better (like everything else Australian) than the New Zealand dollar, we can get slightly cheaper candy. :p

Oh, and they have Kiwi birds (watch out Sage). :dopey:

Yes, LOTS of sheep. A new law has been passed that if a sheep wants to use any electrical appliances you have to let them. So in five minutes i have to get off this as one angry looking sheep would like to go on the net. Probably to visit www.nzsheepdating.co.nz again.

Actually, I'd like to hear some serious responses to this, as Missus_Da and I have thought of vacationing around that stretch.

Wow. That was the worst topic content I've ever seen.
Trust me, I've seen ton worse.
And nobody even knows where/what (a) New Zealand is.
Then how come I know where it is? And most other people? :dunce:

And no, you can't come back in here and reply, "That was sarcasm."

Didn't you learn this in school? I know it was taught in school when I was pretty young, and then taught again in 7th grade.

Wasn't Lord of the Rings filmed in New Zealand.

It was indeed, i think the mountain scenes were shot mainly in the South Island (not sure though because i've never seen any of the LOTR movies).

If you come down to Dunedin, South Island i'll give you a ride in my Skyline! :D What would you like to know? :)

:) Thank you very much, a compliment like that means a lot. 👍 I can elaborate more on the first post if you wish, continue it in otherwords? ;)

In that case…

I’ve only been to the North Island, but it was a very beautiful place. The landscape is really pretty, especially in more rural areas. It’s not a whole lot different to Australia, except I think it’s a little less like the U.S.

There’s a lot of ‘adventure tourism,’ but I think that is mainly in the South Island.

The people are very friendly, and it’s really easy to get around because there’s no language barrier (assuming you can get past that damn accent :p).

Without knowing what else to mention, I definatly recommend a visit. 👍

We are too easy on immigration.

It pisses me off, I can't drive out onto the street without seeing an ethnic face. I know it's an unrelated topic and probably something we shouldn't get into but it really annoys me (patriotic Kiwi = me).

Anyway, because of immigration Auckland has grown incredibly quickly (if the government encouraged immigration to other parts of the country it wouldnt be so bad, stop people coming in altogether is what I want but we're too PC for that and it would be racial discrimination, well **** me ) and the infrastructure hasn't kept up (actually, the government has been too slow) so we have jammed motorways, crowded communities and I can't get a bank account changed without needing a translator.

Okay, racial rant aside things are quite expensive. Housing rates continue to rise as well as mortgage rates (not to mention petrol) but there is no relief anywhere else so it's not easy owning a home and kids (it never is to begin with but could be a lot easier) and like most other countries we pay tax (generally ontop of another tax) and we don't see any improvements, our roads are poor, poverty is very real, healthcare could be better etc etc.

If you choose to holiday here then you will most likely fly into Auckland Airport. Feel free to hang around Auckland for a day or so but there is generally nothing to do here that you haven't already done at home (we have one theme park and an underwater world thats about it).

I would suggest the cliche 'campervan around the countryside' there isn't much in the upper North Island (you may find it beautiful but for me it's just part of the 3 hour drive to our holiday home) speaking of which, the Bay Of Islands is always a beautiful place to go with plenty of fun to be had on the water. From there you can head over to the west coast of the upper north island and drive through some awesome forestry (also where part of the International Rally is held).

South of Auckland is where the real beauty starts, the drive from Auckland to Taupo is nice, open country and the air just feels so fresh compared to the city. The final hour into Taupo (from Tokoroa) takes you through the 'I can't quite remember the name' Forest which is simply awesome.

From Taupo you have Mt Ruapehu (amongst other ski mountains) and The Desert Road. The drive up the mountains is beautiful and the view is astounding, the Desert Road is a few oddhundered metres above sealevel and you can feel the temperature drop as you get higher and higher, quite an odd feeling when the terrain somewhat resembles a desert.

Now from here on my memory is a bit sketchy, I've been driven down this part of the country many times, but mainly straight from Auckland which means we're in darkness after Palmerston North. But the main centre in this part of the country is Wellington.

It has nasty weather and houses the biggest collection of unemployed losers in the country - Parliament.

Now the South Island is something I really want to experience myself, I've only ever flown into Christchurch and can barely remember it but the most vivid thing in my mind is waking up, walking outside and feeling fresh, not ****ty like I do at home.

In a few years time I would like to fly into Chch, hire a car and spend a good 2 weeks driving the Lower South Island: Alexandra, Cromwell, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Wanaka, Doubtful Sound, Milford Sound then over to Christchurch and up to the Upper SI: Nelson, Picton, Blenheim and Marlborough.

We have our poor qualities but I love my country, especially in light of the international actions of other countries, I'm happy we stay out of it and live our own lives :)

Our little slice of planet Earth is very nice (provided you avoid certain locations...).

I love my country. (most of the time).

Nice rant Taurine :D

Oh yeah. Our government sucks. We have a pig ugly PM, they steal our money, etc.

New Zealand is a great place to visit, it caters for most types of tourists, the adventurous types have a great of deal of things to do but it's also a really relaxing place to just spend a while in.

Just do one thing when you to NZ, before anything else.

Get out of Auckland ASAP. Auckland may be the biggest city but there is nothing to do. Also, there's too many JAFAs.
I think that to best enjoy NZ you should hire a car and just plan a driving trip or hire a caravan and just stay whereever you want because it's best not limit yourself to one area.
Maybe a good idea would be to just leave Auckland and head south, go through the Bay of Plenty and down through Taupo too, like Taurine said. After that, take your time to make your own way down to the capital, Wellington and catch a ferry across the Cook Strait. Then cruise the South Island. It's been ages since I've been to the south so I'll let the southerners tell you where to go and what to do.

Aren't they rich? I remember someone posting a whole bunch of exotic car pics in the "Did You See Anything Good Today" thread.

They as in Aucklanders or New Zealanders? NZ has the highest number of Ferrari's per population than any other country on the planet i think.

I didn't know anything about New Zealand before I joined gtplanet. As of now, I get the impression that your country is similar to Australia in some ways. People seems friendly and I know the nature is just heavenly(looking. I don't know, maybe you guys have scorpions and komodo dragons :D).

I'd love to learn more about New Zealand and its' people from this thread.

No, I think I will continue posting. It isn't my fault that nobody seems to be able to take a bit of sarcasm on here anymore.

What's up your ass?

What's up yours? If a ton of people took your post (and other posts) literally, your attempt at sarcasm has failed. And even if it did make sense, your post was worthless, just like this post.

If your post was sarcasm, it would help if you put [/sarcasm] at the end of the post.

What's their speed limit?

If it's over 100km/h then I will consider moving to NZ. :sly:

It's not.

On the open road it's bang on 100km/h. Which is okay in parts as (already mentioned) some of our 'major' roads are kinda dodgy. But then there is no need to enforce 100km/h on our motorways. 120km/h is perfectly safe... But anyway.

The part of New Zealand I live in is definately worth visiting. New Plymouth. I can drive from surf-beach to ski-field in a little over 30mins. We have some of the best surf in the country, if not the world, and it is an attraction for many.

We're stuck out on the west coast, off the main tourist trail so if anyone is looking to get away from the tourist hot-spots and visit the real New Zealand - see how New Zealanders really live, that sort of thing - then Taranaki is the place. (The province is Taranaki, the city is New Plymouth)

I think one of the best things about New Zealand is the safety. As opposed to the US, I can walk down the street without getting shot at. Infact, I can enter (walking or driving) the 'baddest' parts of my town without fear for my life. Terrorism hasn't reached these shores yet (thank God and touch wood) and we're a long way from proceedings in the Middle East and North Korea.

Appartment living in these parts is rare - it's normal to own a 3-4 bedroom house with a bit of land for the kids to run around. The education system is relatively good (well it was when I went through it a few years back - it's all changed now though) and at present skilled workers will have no trouble finding work in virtually any part of the country.

I have lived in several areas of NZ, both in the North Island and the South Island, and have done travelling in both. I guess there are parts of the South Island which are very beautiful on a world scale, but there are parts of the North Island that are very nice too. Many celebrities are moving here - Shania Twain has a farm ('ranch') in the Central South Island, a the hot girl from Lost and the wee Hobbit fellow are planning to move here too. Tom and Nicole used to own a Penthouse apartment in Tauranga, and there are many wealthy (seriously wealthy) people with hidden away holiday homes dotted through out the country. If it's good enough for them... :D

The Last Samurai was filmed in my province, with Tom Cruise spending two months in New Plymouth during filming. For an idea of what the scenary looks like here, take a look that movie. And we use the majority of that land for farming! And for a look at some of the more beautiful parts of NZ, check out The Lord of the Rings trilogy - that was filmed in various places in NZ.

I like my country - and I'd like you to enjoy it too. But, to add to what Taurine has said, we need to be more choosy with who we're letting into this place and stop filling it up with unskilled, useless people who arrive and then sponge off my taxes...

If anyone is seriously planning a holday here, let me know and I can tell you the places to visit, the places to stay away from, and even let you know the real gems that aren't marked on the tourist maps.

:D
