Apparently it's got great weight distribution for drifting. Perhaps other factors in it's design contribute to that as well. So it gained lots of popularity that way.
It's owned by the creator of Initial D. An anime about drifting. Awesome stuff, but make sure to watch it in japanese with subtitles, not the US dubing.
Group A is a early 90s/late 80s rule. They aren't supposed to be super powerful. 200bhp out a normally aspirated, 1.6 liter engine is still 125bhp / liter. The Formula Atlantic race motor only gives about 240bhp. But they needed rebuild after every race. I'd imagine if you want to street a race motor, you give up some power for better service life...

Initial D is a popular manga in japan and S.S. is the drawer/writer. That car is supposed to be Takumi Fujiwara's car as it is in the late manga, not sure exactly which stage it is but I guess it's around the n°30 Manga.
The story is about a young guy T.F. that is deliverying tofu since he's 12 or somehting for his dad driving the mountain up and down, so at 18 once he can legaly drive it, he become soon a monster in the touge racing scene.
After a series of battle he join a Team formed by Ryosuke Takahashi (his the boss/stratege, was a great driver who's nickname was White Comet ) with his brother Keisuke Takahashi (who's running a yellow RX-7 FD). That team is call Project D and is racing in mountain pass (touge) every good japan team. That AE86 is modded with a group A AE101 engine that is rebuild to fit the street need a bit more. Carbon hood apear around volume 30 from memory. So that's what this car is. The car is tuned for downhill battle mostly and T.K. is a specialist of drifracing (yeah I know but it's a manga hey ^^).
Takumi learned to drift while delivering Tofu, which is stored in a water filled chest, so he has to be careful not to spill any of the water. it's totally stupid and in the end that is why I loved it.

Initial D is a Manga/Anime that glorifies street racing, has some ridiculous plots and plot twists and so-so art.
Its one redeeming factor is: the driving and driving/set-up tips given are actually pretty real and realistic... except for the "gumtape" match and the idea of jumping your car several feet in a tarmac race...
^ And taking 10000 degree blind corners that never ends until they've said their share of "describing a situation that takes 40 seconds in a 1 second situation IRL" that all anime does which I have grown really tired of.
As mentioned before, if you watched/read the Initial-D series (i watched all 4 stages Eng subs of course the dub was meh, yet to read) you will know how special it is. But its a ripoff it didn't have the Tofu shop name on the door which is lame.

But yeah, it's a very solid -- if overrated -- car. It's light, predictable in corners, and has a nice exhaust note, when stock. Modified, it's very potent against comparable cars.
A small part of me wishes that PD included Wangan Midnight's Devil Z, especially after introducing SSR7.
