Whats the method for getting the best start off the line without using traction control? I always either get massive wheelspin or just accelerate really slowly, is it per car or is there a trick that works most of the time?

It's dependant on each car, if acceleration is deemed too slow from standstill for a particular car and you have a custom gearbox installed, you could shorten the first gear or gears.
And if you suffer from too much wheelspin, you could tinker with the LSD settings.

As for driving techniques, I mostly just floor it which is a rather crude and no doubt ineffective method but I simply can't resist. :D

I only do that in the older GT's for cars with stage 3 or higher turbo's, the lag in them was RIDICULOUS back then :nervous:

There are still a few cars (most notably the old VW's and Fiat 500 for example) in GT5 where the default custom gearbox ratios cause stalling on standing starts, even when fully tuned, and whereby refiguring those ratios can make a huge difference.

Takes a bit of practice but much more fun to nail a start.

Swappign from car to car you will need to adapt.

Rear engined cars with Rear wheel drive tend to be the easy car to get away. the balance of the car is over the rear wheels... and the pwoer of the engine has to be very high to overcome the sheer weight over this axel.
(Ruf BTR/Alpine 110S)

The amount of power you can send to the rear wheels reduces as the weight balance moves forward... A Mid engined car should hold an advatage over a less exotic Front engined rear wheel drive car.

Tyres are a factor... pretty obvious but the more sticky the tyre (Softer) the more power you can send to the rears. As you use harder grades of tyre the more sympathetic you need to be when applying power.

The Drag racing dudes can probably give you more insight...

But Traction control is for B spec drivers.

I find i get the best starts online when i leave it at idle and then floor it right when the number 2 flashes in the countdown. It may not be the best way, but definitely faster than sitting there pegged. Helps in license tests too.

Group C cars are impossible to start well. I usually leave them in 2nd gear and start them on the rev limiter. Warms up the rear tyres nicely before turn one.

:)

With fully stock set ups you'll have to learn to modulate the throttle to keep the revs up without redlighting the tires. A little red is ok and will still produce a fast start.

With custom setups you want to set up first gear for a full power launch that keeps the engine revving without redlighting the tires. Tune enough car/tire combinations and you get the hang of it pretty quick. On really powerful cars a second or even third gear launch is sometimes possible.

A fast start is essential in online racing. I've won many races just by being fastest to the first corner and avoiding the carnage behind me.

this made my night

But to the OP. I usually have half throttle with "go" comes up on screen, and as soon as the car moves forward I goose it quick let off then back on the gas. I still spin the tires a slight bit but not no where near as much as just bouncing the limiter.

Lmao. I was going to suggest a trebuchet but that takes the cake. Sorry, not helpful but that's how my mind works. I remember seeing a clip of some English bloke chucking cars a few hundred meters with one. Wouldn't want to be in the car tho. Lol

I found when doing some of the licence tests (the braking tests mainly) that some of the cars would launch better (when compared to the ghost) when I just floored it and kept the hammer down rather than feathering the gas pedal.

This is true in many cases, especially in lower powered cars and if tire wear isn't an issue then sometimes that's the way to go. I'd forgotten about the license test ghosts...lol.

Depends on the car, Rally cars and other 4WD you can pretty much floor it and they have a launch control effect (like Lambo 4wds) , for the others, it takes knowledge of the car at hand and the conditions and tires.

A good rule of thumb is that just like in corner exit, you dont want wheelspin, for it kills tires and time.

Usually in any given car i try different techniques, and try to find the sweet spot on the rev meter where i could have a strong LAUNCH, but then start modulating the throttle to keep as much as possible in that torque range and ride 1st until it has nothing left to give but not hitting rev limit.

Conditions and tires play a huge role too, wet tracks and hard tires will be tougher to get a good start on, on the other hand Race Soft tires will let you floor just about any car without spin.

Know your car, know your track. Ill only play with LSD if all else fails.
