Okay, was reading a trade journal for Manufacturing, and ran across an ad for a summit...and one of the subjects was this group...
Local Motors.
Now, it's cool enough that what they've built is basically a trophy-truck with a Coupe Body...but they had an odd approach to building it. They've got a community that helps them design the cars/trucks. And you can join. Don't know if there's a fee or anything to help the design process, but...eh. They describe it as "open source" car design. it's pretty cool.
On the other hand, there's also building it...which is kind of like the programs kitplane builders like Lancair offer - you actually put it together, but they help you out at their factory.
It's a very strange concept...I think you oughta just listen to them, rather than listen to me talk about it...
and here's what they've built so far. The Rally Fighter.
Now, I don't know if the "kitbuild" way of building this car will get around regulations, like the "Experimental" aircraft regs - in fact, if I got one, I'd get FAA "Experimental" stickers to put on inside and outside of the doors just for that fact. But it's really neat, I'll tell ya what.
