I just added a racing exhaust and just noticed this square around it... Why's it there? I tried adding the pic from my iPhone, but it said invalid file.
Simple reason why the exhaust has changed place. Its a free flowing design with less bend possible. If you could look under the car, you'll see that it is nearly strait front to back, that why its on the rear bumper.
Its pretty common to see that in real life too.

It's widely defended as bieng a heat shield, however I find it hard to believe because most professional heat shields are not sheet metal squares tacked on up and over the body like the ones in GT...
That kind of heat shield is usually found on DIY forums made by people who can't afford or don't want to pay for professional heat shields.
What I am used to seeing in the world of heat shields are usually much more polished and fit with the look of the vehicle.
