What's with Lotus & GT5??

So maybe I'm crazy but it seems like GT5 has this very strange view on the Lotus lineup..

on the one hand, Lotus cars are featured prominently in the game.. there's a top gear challenge and an A Spec challenge of 'british lightweights' as well as a few premium car models for Lotus..

..on the other hand..

- the Lotus Elise 111 handles horribly in the top gear challenge which is odd for a well-balanced lightweight car that is among the best handling cars in the real world
- The cockpit looks to be half-rendered (when compared to something like the GT-R the Lotus cockpit looks abysmal with low-res textures and terrible interior detail)
- the upgrade options are incomplete.. for example you can't fit the Elise with a supercharger - even though Lotus themselves sell a supercharger for the car in reality - and the *other* driving sims let you do it.
- most of the relevant current models are totally absent; 2 Eleven, Exige/S/240/260/Cup, Elise SC
- for some reason a carbon fiber bonnet is an option (though the car has no bonnet)

it just seems sloppy, and considering how prominent Lotus is in the genre - and in the game in general - it seems like PD has fallen asleep at the wheel.

I mean the only car newer than 2004 is the Evora?!

What about the Exige.. or even an Elise SC?!

Surely in a game that can accommodate TWO esprit V8 variants from 1998 something could have been done to include an Exige (of ANY kind) or at least something on the elise chassis beyond the 2004 version.

I agree on the rendering - it looks like they forgot to finish the cockpit details and just put what they had into the game, LOL!
 
Doesn't it still have a bonnet, there just isn't a motor underneath it ?
 
Think the issues with the interior are mostly being unable to recreate brushed alloy and suede in game that looks half decent.

The top gear challenge makes the elise handle so bad because it uses comfort tyres whereas even the standard elise has sports tyres in real life.

Carbon bonnet changes the front access panels on the elise.

Other two points are fair enough though. I'm not complaining though they got the 04 111r in which is all I wanted.

I couldn't agree more. The Elise on the Top Gear track is totally ridiculous.

I too fervently desired that there would be an Exige in the game, but feared there wouldn't from the provisional car lists that I had seen. However, it would not be much work, as they already had the 111R in GT5 Prologue, so there were still grounds for hope.

My fear was confirmed when I got the game:

No Exige :(

Not at all impressed that the car enthusiasts' PS3 driving sim does not include one of the all time great driving cars! :boggled::grumpy:

"Still", I thought, "I'll tune up a 111R so that it performs like my Bemani supercharged Exige Cup with 273bhp" 👍

Start tuning it up and get the "supercharger not available" message :eek:
That there is no S/C tuning option for the 111R is beyond belief :banghead:.

As nothingreal says, Lotus have had S/C options on their cars for some time now. This is inexcusable 👎👎👎

And then there's the fact that not even the full colour range is available (NFS Shift offers far better options here). If I want to re-spray my will-have-to-do 111R (big compromise) tuned (only to 241 bhp - another big compromise, but I don't want a turbo) , where am I going to find a car that is in the special Lotus "lifestyle" colour option "Krypton Green" of my Exige?

The 111R can be racing modified.. although after that there is still no supercharger option, it does handle a lot more like in GT5P. I just felt obligated to RM it because of all the fun I had with that car in prologue lol

To be fair I think the combo of the tyres and that breaking corner on the TG test track make the car feel bad. Trust me its not!! Buy one and change out the tyres and sort out the balance and they a fab!!!

I've just RM mine and i'm just about to Stage 3 the engine! Very very nice car to race!
 
Great car to buy and mod yourself. 300hp, grips like hell and is a challenge once it does slide.
 
Yet the elise is one of the only cars that can get racing modifications. It is all very odd.
 
there is a car with the elise chassis newer than 2004, but, unfortunately, it's the tesla roadster.
 
the evora's cockpit / frontcam view dampens the engine noises to where they're almost silent... it's frustrating if you shift on sound
 
True, a couple more cars from the Lotus lineup would be nice. As would being allowed to add a supercharger to the 111R. But if that were so, someone would just be complaining about not being able to do a motor swap instead, or a 4WD conversion, or turning the damned thing in to a spaceship so that they might fly to the moon. There will always be something more they could have done, but because of the constraints of REALITY, such as time and budget, it won't happen. Sorry to burst your bubble.
 
I love my RM Elise, btw. It's one of the best cars in the game and my current favorite. Also, the turbo doesn't take anything away from the car. Try it, you'll like it.

Don´t know, with which tires it is sold in real life. I bet it is sports tires. In GT5 the Top Gear Challenge uses comfort tires.

I bought a Lotus Esprit V8 these days. Man...this car is a bomb, drives lovely.
 
I have been in a 96 elise, uncomfort harder than bread left in the sun tyres, I was amazed at the grip levels.

The elise handles badly in game because they didn't want a repeat of prologue before the patches, whereby everyone online took the elise because it killed everything else round the corners.

And it isn't a Honda.

They were to busy modeling a handful of Miatas for premium to do it. :dopey:
 
Try driving a lotus elise with the stock tires of a family car and no traction control. Let us know if it's still "best handling" :D

You don't need traction control on an elise as it doesn't have the power to spin up where you can hurt yourself.

It can use stock tyres of a family car because it carries half the weight in general.

It is not the fastest car out there but you ain't overtaking it on a round about :)

A bloke let me thrash his Exige around a road course a few years back.

I was absolutely blown away by the grip, flickability and stability of the car - none of the horror story snap oversteer I had heard about.

I shared this impression with him afterwards. His reply??

It's the Avon semislicks - I would never have offered you the keys if it had the street tyres on it... :lol:

That right there told me everything I needed to know about the Elise/Exige chassis ;) hehe

thats exactly what i thought when i bought the 111R... la la la, off to the tuners for the S/C.... DENIED!
 
I agree an Exige would be great, but my fave Lotus in this game is still the Elise 190 from the used lot. 190hp and under 800kg. Best power to weight ratio of all the Lotuses.
 
Sorry to bump an older thread, but there is more going on with the Top Gear Elise challenge than Comfort tires.

If you go into Arcade and set up the car the same way as in the challenge- Comfort:Hard tires, and no assists other than the default of TCS at 5 and ABS at 1, you'll find it handles much, much better than it does in the challenge. For some reason, it seems PD handicapped the car in the challenge to make it artificially difficult. If you switch Skid Recovery Force on for the challenge, you'll find the car handles the same as it does in Arcade mode with SRF off. It's as if SRF in the challenge rights PD's wrong.

It's PD's game, they can do what they want. But I wonder if Lotus is aware of what PD did to their car for the challenge. What if that challenge is the only exposure people get to the Elise. We all know what a wonderful little car it really is, but some people may get the wrong impression from that challenge sneakery.
 
I hate the Elise with a passion, all other Lotuses are great though.

That it has masses more grip with semi slicks? Crikey, what a revelation.

Drive an Elise back to back with any other sports car/ super car and I defy you not o be utterly amazed by the chassis. The speed with which the car changes direction, the feel through the steering wheel, the way the suspension soaks up the bumps, everything is just brilliant.

And yes, I do own one! Mostly because I did drive it back to back with other sports cars/supercars.
