Recently obtained a wheel and after afair amount of on/off playing GT3 / GT4 / and GT5P with the controller being pretty much average i decided i was going to adapt and learn to use the wheel as eventually the gains will come.

Trouble is it's been a while and if i'm using the track line, it always seems to be abit off, so i'll miss most of the Apex's most of my poor corners come in the last sector the massive hairpin at the bottom and the esses up, can't seem to be consisten at all trying to follow the lines, any helpfull tips for this and in general, for a wheel novice.

really help is very much appriceated, been reading up endlessly to try and get abit of insight and so i'd really like your help to make a bit of progression

What kind of wheel do you have? It takes a while to adapt to driving with a wheel compared to a controller too so you`ll have to keep that in mind and just practice and practice....i don`t use the displayed racing line and have it turned off. There is a thread about switching from a controller to a wheel and difficulties associated with the learing curve, but it pays of in the end, you`ll never look at the controller again in the same way once you master the wheel. Hope this helps.

Hi.

When following the blue racing line with a wheel or controller, its thought to be the optimum line to take, the only thing that will change is your braking zone on the approach speed.

If you can hit this line 99% of the time and all braking zones then you are lapping at the max speed for that given line, so your times will not improve.

If you find that you can improve your lap time by means of a slit deviation from this, and by changing your baking zone for each corner that’s great.

There is nothing in the rules that say you have to take a given line or “brake at a given point” if the guy be hide don’t like it tough, that’s his problem, as we all drive differently.

You do whatever works for you, I hope you enjoy your new wheel and I look forward to seeing you on track.

Phillip.

thanks alot, the wheels just a Driving Force Ex far from Ideal i know, however i might be coming into some money to afford a DFGT hopefully, however is there anything stopping me becoming an ok driver with this wheel. then using the new wheel to hopefully progress from there.

if theirs no point using this wheel i may aswell stop now untill i can afford, really thanks alot for the input

Takes time to get used to a wheel,

Just practice until it feels natural.

Then the pace will follow naturally.

My old wheel may be a little older than yours, still has the NeGcon option as well as digital, here is the principal of how Negcon works.

Interesting bit of reading here if you so wish.

But having said that my wheel in digital is a hand full, as full lock comes at about 45 degress, which makes it very twitchy, one slit turn and your off the track, unfortunately neGcon don’t work on PS3 and GT5p so I’ve not been able to try it out.

that looks pretty awesome haha, i'm enjoying the Ex though, it only has 180 degrees lock though which is annoying, just means i have to be really precise, does the larger lock radius of the better models really make so much difference

Cool read... I vaguely remember those controllers from way back :) but I just kept using my PS1 controller at the time...

I think the 900 degrees lock will be more comfortable for you... 180 degrees doesnt give much room :)

Hmm, im settled on the fact i need the 900 degree rotation, just the matter on money that i don't have right now, nothing stopping me getting better with 180 as its all going to help right :)

Hi Kinetic.

I takes time and effort to learn the wheel... when I changed a year ago I guess it took me a good couple of months to get fully up to speed. My suggestion would be to get yourself a mid powered rear wheel drive car (something like the BMW 135i), go to Fuji time trial and download the 10th best time ghost... and then just try and follow it. See where he brakes, what lines he takes and where he accelerates. This should give you a feel for what you should be doing.

Also, read Maz's (Synwraith) thread on adjusting to the wheel for the pad... lots of good comments an advice there.

thanks for the tip :), i'll definatly be trying out the ghost just to try and get a better feel for it, absolutley loving it at the minute though, i can see the wheels benefits on the Ford GT already.

Thanks all for being so accomodating and helpful to a noob :)

How do you get the Ghosts?

In Arcade Time Trial, go into Rankings. The top 10 will have a little icon on them, highlight that with cursor. Then press X, then confirm Ghost Replay download.

Ghost replay is the one you chase around.
Replay is the one you see in the 'Demonstration' if you back out of the 'My Page' menu.

or just follow Clacks around the track sometime (he might do it for ya, he's pretty cool). he did that for me a few months back and helped me drop almost 10 secs/lap. the driving line through the final sections at Fuji is just wrong ;)

Many thanks... I'll be checking that out sometime soon... Apprentice tonight though so no chance til at least Thurs!!

Ya totally agree with that - I can only stick to the line on the penultimate bend if I brake A LOT earlier than it says to... Braking into the Hairpins is pretty useful though!

i'd just feel so cheeky, bugging him and asking him if he could help me with laptimes though :(

You wouldn't be the first. ;)

I doubt I have many top 10s on the board at all, TTs aren't very entertaining to me usually. I only do the ones posted as a biweekly challenge at the PSU forum.

The only one I remember Top-tenning is Fuji GT in the F430, I was second to Struppi before msgt-sd upgraded and various Italians bumped me.

ahh thanks for that :) will have a look

just ordered the DF GT off Amazon while its cheap and got some money in, the G25 is only 150 now but, the GT will more than tide me over

I highly recommend you turn off the driving line. It will be a little strange at first being as you are used to it, but quickly you'll be driving better because you'll actually be driving the track, not following a line...

General first rules of racing:
#1: look as far through the corners as you can, do not stare right in front of your car. Your brain will fill in the blanks.

#2: always look to the INSIDE edge of a corner, you naturally drive where you look so never look at the outside edge while taking a corner.

These sound very simple but in fact they are some of the best tips I can give you. You'll be really surprised the difference in your driving if you actively look as far through the corner as you can to the inside edge.

Specifically, for the hairpin at the bottom of the hill on Fuji Formula One course, there are marks on the road that I use as braking markers for the faster cars (Ferrari 430, Ford GT, Corvette Z06 etc). As you head down the hill toward the bend, there are some faint "stripes" on the surface of the road, that kinda look like a faded Zebra crossing. There are two sets, a couple of metres apart, and I use them, usually starting to brake in between the two. If you pay attention to the road surface you'll see what I mean.

Oh and a bit of general advice for the uphill section, LATE APEXES!!!

Ahh thank you for the help again, i'm really struggling with the S Class races now, golded a few but the pace of the cars and my ability on the wheels not good enough to allow me to take control of them really.

going to try to adapt to the driving lines off then :)
would going back to GT4 with the wheel and re-doing the licenses etc help me out ?

NO!

The physics in GT4 aren't anywhere near as good as GT5p. You need to improve in GT5p, so learn in GT5p.

Ahh ok :)

would it not atleast help with correct driving lines on most of the tracks or do the physics just detract too much ?

Yep, the physics would just spoil it for you. As previously suggested, just grab some of the replays of the faster guys in Time Trial mode, and follow their lines. You can't be that bad though, surely?

For what its worth, I still cannot get within several furlongs of the fast drivers around Eiger Nordwand. I'm convinced there is some voodoo devil magic going on there...

Hmm, my best kinda lap i've done is a 2.04.## on Suzuka in the 750PP Amuse, i enjoyed that, it's probably nothing decent but its only my 3rd real day on the wheel

Update :)

My DF GT gets delivered tomorrow, can't wait! used my friends today and the presicion and the better pedals meant i was alot quicker..

still struggling to get to grips with S-7 though, i'll soldier on, thanks for all the help

So frustrating i can't do anything, "ARGH" no car i try is paying off, everything on the grid just seems to pull away

There all using standard physics i'm using professional, there all abit too loose on professional.

Just seems that no matter what i use everythings always pulling away
