What's better? I'm getting a wheel for Christmas. (not sure which one, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the best one you can get) Am I going to notice a difference from the controller to the wheel DRIVING wise? I know it's going to feel different.

Probably...

With a wheel, you don't have to mash the breaks or throttle. It's also a lot easier to feather the throttle to maintain the same speed through a corner. You also turn better I think. When you turn using the analog stick, you have to turn it the whole way and the driver will slowly turn it all the way, with the steering wheel, you can be more precise with where the wheel (in the game) turns and how quickly.

I don't know if I explained that well, I've never been very good at explaining things
 
I'm not sure what you mean by "Driving-wise."

A person who is very good with a controller can probably be about as good as someone who is very good with the wheel. If you keep the aids on, I don't see any reason why you couldn't beat the game just as easily.

But in terms of fun and feel, it's far, far better. It takes a little while to get used to, but I would never dream of going back.
 
you will feel it instantly. i started gt5 with the Logitech G27 and loved it, i used a controller quickly to show a relative the game, and wow it was a massive difference.

when you think about it, you have about 15mm of movement in the triggers and joysticks on the controller to have full lock, or full throttle, etc. but with a steering wheel you have 900 degrees to control the steering and alot more movement to control the throttle. expecially with rally.

have fun with the wheel when you get it!
 
You cannot play this game without a wheel!! When you take corners you dont have the option to have your foot jently on the gas, keeping your momentum going making you alot slower! Having a wheel adds realism and it can be very entertaining while having guests over!

That - and not the potential for faster lap times - is what I love about a good force feedback wheel. With good wheel and FFB implementation (and GT5 has that) the driving experience is so vastly improved over a gamepad that it almost feels like you're playing two different games.

There is whole new world in GT for those without a wheel, I have a Fanatec GT3 RS V2 with All aluminum ClubSport pedals, and let me tell you that you will be quicker, quicker, if you know what I mean. Look at the top times in any racing platform, they ALL use wheels. Its not just the fact that you will be quicker but it ties it all together virtually to the real world, it makes the game tangible and far more entertaining. Get a wheel mate, you will be hooked!

And to the guy that says that you can be "just as good" with a controller, I'd like to see it. Maybe good, but not AS GOOD. The ratio of movement(wheel and pedals) with a wheel is far wider, therefore giving more control and accuracy. Don't let him fool you!

You wouldn't play Rock Band with a controller would you? You can BTW!
 
The G27 makes my knuckles white and my forehead/back sweat like crazy. It's a completely different sensation than a controller and basically a must for this game.

I'm never so sure if I did a good job of explaining things. I usually either over explain something or can't explain it so I use examples and either way it doesn't make sense.

I am as fast with the wheel as with the controller. I am serious about this. You just need to practice the right way. I havent played the controller so much, but the wheel doesnt make me faster than 1-2 tenths. something like that.

The wheel to give you more feeling and i prefer the wheel. So get one and your experience is fulfilled :)

Btw, i am using the joysticks for both throttle/braking and steering. not the buttons. and all aids off except 1 lvl ABS.
 
Yeah, there's no real reason you can't be just as fast with the controllers as with the wheel. The wheel is more intuitive, but I suspect that with practice, you can be just as good with a DS3.

Although, I never used professional physics on Prologue with the controller, as using the aids with the controller never took away from the experience in my opinion. With the wheel though, it definitely does.
 
From a non-gamer perspective, it's a huge difference (non-gamer meaing not already used to the DS3) It's like asking someone to walk with stilts. You can naturally walk, but with stilts it's unnatural and takes time to get used to the controller. The annology is in relation to driving, I can drive but getting onto a driving game using a controller just means I need to learn the controller.

It CAN be done but why would you want to? The wheel gives better control of the three basics of driving: steering, braking and feathering the trottle. The controller emulates this but for a truly immersive gameplay, a wheel is a must.

How can one play a driving simulator without the simulation equipment?

My 60yr old dad jumped onto GT5 with my G27 and he loved it. He could instantly drive around and control the car and even commented: "you can really feel the power and speed of this car" (AMG SLS) which indicates immersion. I had to kick him off after an hour :P

I would say its a great difference.. the difference is that you acctually have to do something.. Not just move your thumbs.. How much movement the wheel needs, breaking.. etc

oversteer is another thing. i know whats wrong when the wheel tells me something.. you dont, and you have to learn.

The wheel is a more accurate method of gaming not to mention much more fun and challenging..

I have both the Gt-force and the G25. and i use gt-force. G25 has a habit of going off sync and you cannot reconfigure it.(exept moving the actual steeringwheel.)
 
Just started using the DFGT and I'm already much faster with it than the DS3. It's just much more intuitive.
 
Wheel all day. I´m using the Logitech G25. Its huge but I built a custom holder for it and the pedals so I can hang it all up on the the wall behind the bedroom door when not in use. That way it doesnt collect dust or take floorspace.
Dust ain´t a problem atm though - I´m using it ALOT :)
