At what point do you guys feel the step up to Racing is deemed "justifiable" ?

The reason I ask, my friends and I we plan online race nights where we have to stay within predefined limits. The previous limit we had was: Japanese car, 4WD, Max 355 BHP and above 1100 kg and Sport Soft max - which went very well.

Now we are racing German cars, 552 BHP and 1300 kg and again Sports Soft. Two of my friends are having some stability problems, I know they aren't the greatest of drivers, but they are using the Audi R8 5.2 so you would think that they should be able to handle it with Sport Soft.

Does an Audi R8 5.2 type of car with 550 BHP justify Racing tires or should we keep telling them to shut it and learn how to drive :) ??

Do you guys have some sort of a rule of thumb for tires? Road cars = no Racing tires or something like that ?

It's all preference. There is nothing wrong with using Race tires, even if you're driving a mini.

As for me, I generally go by these rules:

Street legal sports car - comfort soft
Street legal track car or tuned car - sports hard to sports medium
Race car - Sports medium or above

R8 with sports soft sounds pretty manageable.

Some cars just take longer to learn.

The tires would help them in the short run.. but learning how to control unwieldy cars would help them in the long run.

That is exactly what we(the more experienced drivers) have been telling them(our not so experienced drivers) in our little group.

On the other hand it depends on their motivation to play. If you only want to have some fun then do whatever is fun. Not everyone plays GT5 very seriously.

Soft Sports already provide an insane amount of grip. If you look at the g-meter in game they can pull up to about 1.8g compared to about 1.3g of the hard sport tyre. I took a look at these values while testing a NSX Type-R for the first A-Spec Endurance Race yesterday.

I suggest your mates to work on their driving technique and/or the setup of the car if you are racing with customisable parts.

This is pretty much what I do. 👍

All I want to do is race so I just always use racing softs ... I don't see the point of using the other tyres tbh :S

If you want the races to be a bit of a challenge then Race tires on Race cars only and never use soft race tires on anything.

If you just want to win with ease soft race tires on everything.

I think even in A-spec mode most races are done only at Sport tire. Only races with race cars involves full race tires. Only exception I think is the Tuned Car Championship.

I also did the first enduro at Grand Valley and with my tuned S2K there is a 7 sec a lap difference in ultimate laptime between sport soft and sport hard...
