The title says it all. When is Alfa Romeo coming back to the US?

Most people are excited because of the gorgeous 4C that should be coming. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for it either, but seriously. How many of us will be able to buy it?

What I'm almost equally excited for is their normal cars coming back. The stuff for the masses. Well for the lunatic masses, but you know what I mean. Not as much the Giulietta hatch (best car Alfa has made, not the best Alfa), but the new Giulia (159 successor), Brera/the Brera successor, and even the MiTo. When it comes time for me to get my TRUE first car (one I spend my own money on), I want it to be something fun, Italian, and full of character like the Fiat 500 Abarth (coming 2012) or one of the Alfas coming here

Last time I checked, there was no official date or year, but maybe I didn't do enough digging. Anybody know of any specifics?

I imagine that FIAT will assess the demand for the 500. A lot of people say they want one, buy will anyone put their hard earned money towards one? It's the same here in the UK, most people would love to buy a 159, but end up with a 3 series, A4 or a Mondeo because they believe all the rubbish about build quality. An Alfa or Fiat is just as good if not better built that the competition, but people only are too easily led by stereotypes.

Don't get your hopes up too much, Alfa's may look nice, but they are not very reliable.

Alfa's ain't no Subaru if you want it to go on forever.

But a Subaru ain't no Alfa if you care about aesthetics.

They are just as reliable as a Ford, Vauxhall/Opel, VW, BMW etc etc. The only difference between them all is 'perceived quality', such as the materials used and the quality of the dealers and how good they are at resolving issues you may have with your particular car. This second point has always been a trouble for Fiat/Alfa.

All cars have issues in the lifetime. Some more than others, but on the whole, you would be surprised how many so called reliable cars fail and need major repairs.

I've been a car mechanic for 9 years now, and Alfa's are unreliable as hell, maybe the buildquality is good, and they do look very good, but the electronics in an Italian car is not even half as good as an German build car. And it's all electronics these days in cars.

Oh and I live in Europe, the Netherlands. So I've seen enough European cars.

Chrysler's new PF chassis car (the one to replace the craptastic Caliber) will be based of a Alfa Giulietta. I have to imagine once they work out the PF chassis for US sales they can then incorporate the technology for US sales. I'd expect them to turn up in the Detroit area this time next year.

The electronics will change for the American market. All US cars have to have OBDII diagnostics onboard as well as other various electronic boxes.

While this does not guarantee they'll be any good, it does mean they'll be different. Can't be any worse than GM/Delphi though...

Fair enough, can't argue with a professional. I do however know that the difference has narrowed significantly. Do you see many recent models (159, Gulietta, Mito) with many problems?

Opel (Vauxhall for us) is awful based on user opinions. It was voted the worst manufacturer in this years JD survey. Their best car was the Insignia, which came 69th of 108. The new Ford KA came last, just like the old one.

Alfa is now in the top 10, joint with Toyota and VW. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/buying-and-selling/2011-05/alfa-jd-power/

Another good article is:

Anything post 2005, especially the US spec Alfa's which will all be brand new, should be fine.

How ironic that you were satisfied with the title when I was confused by it and opened this thread to see what it was about.

When is Alfa coming.... to formula 1?
When is Alfa coming.... to Madagascar?
When is Alfa coming.... out with a new (insert demands) sportscar?
When is Alfa coming.... out with a car that has reliable electronics?

We're in the 2010s now, not the 1980s.

Seem to recall Alfa being in the top 10 in the last JD power survey. Edit: tree'd.

Not every alfa is unreliable, we have a Gtv 2000 'bertone' and a 1981 spider. They never have any problems. The last failure that we had wasn't even a alfa part, but some cheap brand part

If it's true that they leave the electronics in Italy, it will be without a doubt more reliable.
Even the models from 2000 and later have strange quirks, just as it should be with an Alfa.

I always think they (the carbuilders) should let the English or Italians design the aesthetics, and let the Germans or Japanese build the rest of the car. Ignore the French and you'll have one hell of a car.

This! That will be without a doubt an HUGE improve for reliability. As they have strange ways of storing carparts in Italy. (out in the open etc etc).
