When your dad "buys" your first car

As I moved to Norway from Belgium 9 months ago, it is legal to drive a car from the age of 16 with a person who has it's license for at least 5 years.

So, I've been driving cars a couple of months now and my dad went loking for a car at a friend of his.


At the back there was this '85 Subaru pick-up with 300,000 km on the mileage.

So my dad made a deal with the guy, if I work a little for him, I can have it for free.

I'm planning to keep it for a while, work a little on the engine, new 15" rims as that the biggest possible on the tiny pick-up+ new classic chrome side mirrors.

I hope I can drive this car for another 50,000 km while saving up for a second-handed Toyota. I should manage to drive some kilometres more since it's Japanese stuff :sly:

Although you can get your license from the age of 18, I'll begin building that little Subaru up now already.


So, anyone around here almost "got" his or here first car free or by just helping people?

My parents didn't pick up my first car, I had to purchase it.

However, that aside, I do have to question your logic. You've stated you want to spend money on new rims, tires and mirrors. Yet, in the next sentence, you state the purpose of this one is to save for the next one.

That is the wrong approach. This car is nothing more than a means of transportation in two aspects. One literally, one figuratively. It gets you from home to work and back. Two it is going to allow you to save more cash for the next one.

My first car, I did up nicely. $9000+ into the stereo, another $5000 into the car performance. When I decided to sell it, I had nothing more than a 9 year old Dodge with 180,000 miles on it. Not a real return on cash.

You've got a good step up to get a nice car, the next time around. Take advantage of this situation.

You're right, why spend the money on an old Subaru.

Well, I have to spend some money on the engine if I want to use it for some time.
 
No chance of my parents buying me car...gotta save up for my own land rover or clio or something:D
 
My Parents did it the tricky-smart way. They bought a car for me and I made payments to them when I was 17. I had paid it off and was moving out of the house to start on my own when I was 19 and they had saved the money I paid to them and gave it to me to help me get my start. Very clever of them. And I sure appreciated it!
 
My first 2 vehicles were free from my dad.
--1st vehicle was a 67 Chevy pickup with a brand new 350 engine. Lots of good times in that truck and I learned a lot about vehicles and bodywork with it. The beginning of my muscle car addiction. I still miss this truck. Could have been a sweet ride with the knowledge I have now.
--2nd vehicle was a crappy mid 80's Dodge 600series. POS little car.
 
This going to sound odd, as many of you are kinda aware that I have/had 2 cars. The SC300 that died wasn't exactly mine, as I shared it with people in my family when they needed it. (My cousin drove it for a month, my dad had to use it for a little while, etc.)

The '60 Biscayne is my car. It was pretty strange how I ended up with it. My dad and I were coming back one night after thanksgiving from his hometown on Highway 36, and we saw 3 old cars outside a little car lot. One was a Blue '70 Olds Cutlass, the other was a black '47 chevy pickup with flames, and the other was a white 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne. It was the coolest of the 3, and my dad told me to tell him the number on it. (I did, but I didn't think he'd buy it or anything, I mean, he looked at stuff all the time and wrote the phone number down but never bought) So, we left and headed home. A few weeks later, I asked dad what happened with the Chevy, and he said that all the cars were gone, and that nobody returned his call. We passed the dealer, and nothing was there. Two nights later, on the 21st, dad took me to this little shed type thing that he owns in Marceline. (it's really just an old empty gas station)

He said "now, I know that you're going to be working here in town over the summer, and I figured that you'd need something to drive as the lexus will probably die(god, he's good at predictions!) , so uh.. *opens a door* That's yours now.

I was totally dumbfounded. My dad had bought me a car and kept it from me until 3 days before Christmas. I have paid for a bit of it though. (the Wheels, and the Transmission, and the set of locks I bought)

So.. That's my really long story of how my dad gave me my car.
 
I bought my first car for for 1 penny (CAN) so about .85 cents US, off my aunt and uncle when I was 16. It was a 1984 Topaz that lost 1 of its hub caps the first time I drove it. Then one day, my dads friend stopped by with classic 80's rims for me (solid circles with indented X's on them :yuck:) for free which put the final pimp touch to the beast. 👍

It liked to shut itself off while I was driving it, and it was starting to get some rust holes, but did that thing ever swing its back end out on the dirt roads for me! :lol:

My sister on the other hand comes home one day to find a 1996 Ford Contour Sport with the ZETEC (sp?) engine and a 5 speed waiting for her in the driveway. Then she has the nerve to complain about it everyday the ungrateful 🤬 ! :grumpy:
 
My dad sold me his '81 Mustang in '91 for the same price he paid for it. The equivalent to about $3.

See, it was a company car, assigned to him and when the company was going to renew his wheels, he had the option of buying it, which he did. Companies seel their old fleet cars to their employees at a much lower price than anyone else. He also bought a Ford Sierra 300 Sapphire for about $100, which I sadly didn't get. The 'stang lasted me for about 12 years, though :)
 
Sort of...My parents borrowed $3200 from me over two years (yes, I kept accurate records on my parents!) when I had my first real paying job. When I asked for my money back when I went away to school, they offered me their '88 Accord in return.

Not a bad deal, considering they let me "test drive" the car for 2 years. But I suppose I paid for it with all the grocery bagging and stocking when I was young; I used very little of what I earned, and saved the rest. I could pretty much could pay for school lunches and gas on the tips alone.
 
My first car cost me £650, my second £800, my third £1500 and my fourth £5000. I currently have car number three and four parked outside (Green Puegeot 306 1.9 and a dark blue VW Bora V5).
 
Congrats on the Subby, 4WD suits this country well. Altough the way the sun is shining now we'll have summer within the next week. Just a warning though, I recommend that when you purchase your first car, have it registered and insured on your parents (with their consent, obviously). You'll save some serious cash.

I'm myself beginning on a new job this monday, my current ended this day, and needed a car badly. Looked at the very cheapest end of cars at AutoDB.no, and spotted an '86 Carina II not far away, and planned to buy it. Then I talk with my dad on the phone this evening - turns out the current family car, a '91 Primera 2.0, becomes "mine", so I won't need to do a haste-buy. Why? Well, he's upgrading to a '95 with a diesel-engine.

Lucky me, now I can save up to a better vehicle for this autumn when I'm going to start college.
 
I wouldn't say that my first car is mine. It is, however, "mine". It [A 1995 Neon, 4 door, auto) was passed down through a couple people in the family, and I have the use of it until I go out and buy my first car. Then the Neon will continue its' passage through the family. My only fee for it is that I'm expected to take the front suspension off and transmission to get at and fix the rear main seal on the engine... It leaks. Coincidentally, I start this on Monday.
 
I never had the priviledge of someone buying me a car--I wonder what it's like. Instead of wasting money on upgrading your first car how about leaving it the way it is and learning how to drive safely with it--then with the money you'd saved by not upgrading it you can buy yourself a second car in the future that will be newer and more worthwhile to upgrade. Just a thought.
 
Well, when my father had the 944, he had offered to sell it to me when I could buy it off him (sadly, we sold it around his passing).

I have bought my own car, however, the 1st true one would be the '93 Mitsubishi in our driveway.

My 1st was something from my uncle I lived with for a few years just for me to get to school and such.
The 2nd was money my parents and I had put into a savings account, most of it theirs (this was probably my biggest mistake ever in money).

So, the '93 Mitsu. is pretty much what I considered my 1st car I ever bought on my own. The 330Ci is actually on a lease, so I don't considered that a "bought" car.
 
Yea, I actually got my first car back in December (5 months ago).

My dad paid all of it for me from his and my mom's christmas bonus from work. It's a 1998 Volkwswagen Jetta. I'm 18 now, have had my license since I was about 17 and a half (legal to get full license at 16 over here), and it's a really nice car. It's got a 2.0l inline-4, has 115hp or something like that, it's more than fast enough for me, gets good gas use, has a fair amount of room, and doesn't have any problems whatsoever. I also think it's very beautiful too.

I plan to sell it in like 5 or 6 years time and get myself a used 1-2 year old Impreza coupe/sedan or a used Mustang.

The jetta currently has 150,350km on it (had 146700 on it when I bought it or so 4 months ago).
 
Car #1: My Dad and I went 50/50 on her, but I didn't have a decision I what I would get. He ended up comming across a 1993 Volkswagen Fox Wolfsburg for only $1200. She had less than 100,000 miles on the odometer, but she needed some cosmetic and and mechanical work. He bought it (without me knowing) and I agreed to pay for it, and everything that went wrong with it. I had her for a year and a half untill some stupid Asian woman and her stupid friends drove her 2000 Chevy Cavalier into it, totaling my car.
- As a side note, this was not her first crash, and later I found out it wasent the first time she had crashed the Cavalier. Since the accident was almost head on, both cars were totaled, I collected my $500 plus a few extra for other damages, and I went to my second car.

#2: My second car (the one I have now) is a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg. After nearly a month without a car in early 2005, I was getting desperate for a new car. I eneded up comming across a private business that operates mostly by selling used Volkswagens and Audis, as well as a few other special Euopean models. There, I found a 1998 Jetta K2 (same as a Wolfsburg, different badges, special seats, came with a ski-rack) for $5800. I went a checked the car out, checked insurance, etc. About a week later my Dad and I had gone out to the dealer, and he sold it. To my advantage, he had just recieved the '96 Wolfsburg on a trade in, and from there it was a process of co-signing the bank loan with my Dad on the car, getting insurance, and driving back to the dealer. I ended up with a $4000 car (if all of the problems would have been corrected, such as cracked fog lights and scratched paint) for just $2500. I still call it the steal of my life

My dad offered to loan me the $1750 to buy my car, and I only had to pay him $1000 back. I pay for repairs, gas, and insurance myself.
 
My first car came to me at the age of 15... I had $800 in a savings account and most if it magicly dissapeared when this car showed up in my drive one day..lol
My dad had took my money and purchased a friends 78 MustangII for me...(without my knowledge*sp*)
the car was a pile, but i loved it drove it for almost a year and completely killed it...:lol: Jumped it a few times, used to hop the back wheels about a foot off the ground if you pumped the brakes just right...lol
 
My dad bought his 1979 Super Beetle Convertible new. And we've always had it in our garage. So I've just kind of inhereted it as my daily driver.
 
I had bought my first car from my dad. He sold me his, about to die, 1980 Chevy Malibu Station Wagon for $500.
I was about 16 at the time and already had a few jobs and was able to purchase it from him.
While I hated that car with a passion, I kind of miss it as I had many fond memories with it. But in all my hatred for that car, it helped me get a better job that I was doing quite well in.
The transmission finally dropped out of that Chevy and I needed another car.
I was then able to purchase my fathers hand me down 88 VW GTi. Again, he sold it to me for $500. The car was in questionable shape as he had already put a new engine in at after the first one blew up. But, that was a very fun car! I had some great times in that one and it was the first car that had some reasonable amount of power. 16 valves BABY!!!
Unfortunately, that car met an early demise when an old man in a Buick decided to crash into me.

While my dad didn't give me any of his cars, or buy any of them for me, he certainly did help me out quite a bit with them. I certinaly didn't pay for them what he could have sold them for. I'd like to thank him for that.
