Not the End: An Editorial by Jordan Liles from Planet Grand Theft Auto:
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is only 19 short days away. After Vice City's four million pre-orders made by stores back in 2002, there is no telling how many pre-orders San Andreas will have. We can all assume that there will be at least four million this time around, if not more.

But wait...why assume it when we have the facts? When asked on September 9th how much higher San Andreas' pre-order numbers would be compared to Vice City, Take-Two Interactive Software said that it's a "significant" rise. And when they made that statement, there was still a month and a half till the game's release.

Let's look at this another way. With San Andreas' pre-order numbers being "significantly higher" than those of Vice City, just how many are we talking about? Or rather, where will it stand on the all-time-most-pre-orders list?

The GTA series has sold more than 32 million copies worldwide to this day. Who is ahead of that? The Mario series is the obvious dominator with more than 100 million copies of the Mario games sold to this day. The Zelda series is near 40 million, and Tetris for the Game Boy sold more than 33 million.

When GTA passes Tetris in just a few weeks, it won't be a major milestone. Let's not take any credit away from the greatest puzzle game of all time. It's simplicity of fitting shapes together has the same effect today as it had back then; it stands the test of time. Most of the GTA games won't stay popular for 15 years as Tetris for the Game Boy has. Of course, Tetris is one game while GTA's 32 million is for the series as a whole.

Despite claims from those at Nintendo...let's say...David Gosen (managing director of Nintendo Europe)...Grand Theft Auto is not a "dead-end street." One of the questions that many are asking these days is "Where will the next GTA game take place after San Andreas is released?" An even bigger question is "Is this it for GTA? Is this the last one?" I can answer that with confidence: no.

While Take-Two Interactive Software might not admit it, San Andreas is going to save them from even worse financial troubles. With financial problems and top-position management changes over the past year or so, its going to be a godsend for them. It's almost as if they are starving of hunger for a big financial boost, and this will feed that hunger. They need Grand Theft Auto to keep going.

Does this mean that if Rockstar Games says that they want to stop the series that Take-Two will try to force them to do another game? Maybe. But I don't see Rockstar calling it quits anytime soon. The situation I just mentioned is just a "what if?"

With Half-Life 2's online pre-orders starting earlier today and the huge release of it nearing, many PC gamers want to know what they can look forward to next. What's coming up after this year's big moneymakers? What can we look forward to? Will videogames ever reach a peak?

There will be more GTA games. As to where it will take place or if it will have online compatibility is still unknown, but I can say this for sure:

No one even had the thought that the next game after Vice City would take place in three cities plus countryside with 12 small towns. The only big discussions before anything was announced about San Andreas was "Is it going to be in Sin City, San Andreas, Bogota, London or Tokyo." Notice the "or." If you had told someone that you think it would be in three cities with countryside and 12 small towns, you would have been bombarded with replies such as "a PS2 disk can't hold all that" or "that can't be done in two years" or several other responses.

Rockstar is full of surprises...whether it be the way they do publicity or the original assortment of games that they bring out. Don't worry about the next one in the series. It's going to be great. Rockstar is one of the very few developers that has that kind of track record.

--------------

I believe the rumours from a while back, where they said that they wouldn't be surprised if the next GTA, almost definately on the PS3, will be set back in the present in Liberty City. It will probably be a follow-on of the storyline in GTA 3.

What do you guys think?

I suspect that GTA:4 will be similar to SA... but with 3 states... that have all 3 PS2 cities in...

So We would have NY state, Florida and California in one game...

C.

Well I've mentioned that before, and it's a very definate possibility, and it's been requested a fair few times before from fans. And with San Andreas, we can see that Rockstar like making requests come true...

The Liberty City thing would be okay, but they would have to expand on the City, possibly into a state. But the LC, VC and SA in one would be great.

What I'd like to see is R* take GTA to the next level. SA is a whole state, so why not do an entire country? GTA:UK is how I would like the GTA series to debut on the PS3.

GTA:UK is how I would like the GTA series to debut on the PS3.
That would be boring. Especially after GTA: London 1969 and The Getaway were. A whole state is fine I think. They wouldn't do a whole country anyway.

I hope R* keep going with the series onto the PS3. R* just keep making there games better and better so there is no end to the possibilities. They could even make the whole country but I am happy with a state for now. Where do you dig up all this info from??? You just keep finding more and more.

Anyway thats me for the night, Glasshouse will be on soon and my Greenday Album just finished (American Idiot) so I'm going. Cyas tomorrow maybe.

Well half of my life is Grand Theft Auto, so it's inevitable.

Rockstar (this was when San Andreas was just confirmed) said that they're going to have a well-earned break after San Andreas, and they said themselves that they will be back better than ever for the PS3. So I think that's confirmation that they'll have a game for PS3. But don't expect it to come out for around 3 years at least, it will be a big game and they said it won't be started on straight away. They ARE having a well-deserved holiday, so I guess that's fine by me. Plus San Andreas is a big game.

Read the first post. I explained that they are on a holiday, and this whole thread has been about WHAT the game will be. So obviously we don't know.

I think it will expand on Liberty City but into a BIG state, I mean a real big state, close to a real state. They could be working on the game if they wanted to be (I'm not saying they are) because the PS3 OS and coding has already been given out to game developers.

Yeah, but they said themselves they won't. And I know you're saying could, which means you know they won't, so don't pick me up on that!

But it will most likely be either of the main 2 mentioned. Liberty City expansion (story-wise and city/state-wise) or all 3 places.

Well, If it goes to Tokyo or England, i won't be happy. This is our (America's) Game franchise. That's how i feel about it. I think Rockstar will take a break, San Andreas will take the average player a Year? to complete. R* will probably work on other, smaller games. Like Red Dead Revolver, and stuff like that. I think the Next GTA will be connected to III's storyline. It has to be! But remaking LC isn't going to sell copies. You can't downsize after SA. It just wont' work. I don't think you'll have to go bigger though. How bout ATL? or Houstan, or St. Louis? BAM! that's it, It should be in St. Louis. A big city, but with a nice, midwestern State, the Missouri River, and the Arch! Not to mention AnhieserBusch (sp?)!!!

Rockstar will probably follow the trend of other video game franchises. Higher resolution, larger worlds, and online play. That's about all there is to it. Location debating is rather insane, as they could choose from any of hundreds of locations.

True, very true. I mean, if forgot to post it, but it seems lonly logical to take the dive into MMO?? Right? It's the perfect set up. Forget States and Countries, how bout an entire Planet?? Look at SWG?? or anyother MMO! You start out with a little house with one garage, and then you have to work your way up, watching out for the other players, who are also trying to expand their gang turf and buy up property. MMO, tha'ts where it's going.

I wonder if they would take it back to london and put it at a current time rather then put it back to the 60s man that was lame

I think you missed my point. I'm not saying it has to be "mega-multiplayer". I'm just saying that it could be online with a hundred or so individuals on a map the size of Vice City or San Andreas. And double the number of computer characters and vehicles and it should look pretty good.

But the location itself makes no difference. And really, who cares anyway.

That's an odd thing to say. It doesn't matter how you personally feel about it. The Grand Theft Auto franchise belongs to Rockstar Games. How could it possibly belong to anyone else? America'a game franchise? I don't even know what that means.

KM.

With the online I'd prefer lots of mini games than one big one that everyone is in. Maybe they could have a rampage where you can kill whoever is online at the time.

Probably illinformed and comparing to something like Gran Turismo or Final Fantasy from Japan or Tomb Raider from the UK. Or the Sonic and Mario franchises also from Japan. At first glance there aren't any game franchises from the United States. Madden maybe, but that's not original game content. Quake and such from ID aren't really "franchises" per se, and they're not completely on the consoles either.

But I'm meerly speculating. Passing the time.

Woohaa!

eh, it didn't really mean anything, just felt like saying it because i don't wanna play another 'The Getaway', or Tokyo Extreme Racer. The Getaway could have been great to me, but with no mid-mission save points, it got very damn annoying when you died 3/4 through a 30 minute mission! Actually, if R* had the resources, they should make a GTA specific to each geographical region. One for Europe, one For Asia and the Pacific, and One fore North American and South America. That would be cool, because then you could order the other games and have a totally different expeirence.

actually youre right, :guilty: I didn't even realize R* North was not in North America :dunce: But either way, So far, the Second generation GTA games have felt like an American Franchise. All we have are sports games.... And First Person Shooters. No truly Great Game Franchises. I just want something to call my own! :cries:

Okay, I understand. What you mean is that you'd like for future GTA games to be set in the US of A. Fair enough, it's just the phrase "America's game franchise" sounds a bit weird.

Bear in mind though, that The Getaway being no good has nothing to do with it being set in London. After all, most GTA players aren't too impressed with True Crime or Driver 3 and they're both set in US cities.

I understand that Rockstar have trademarked certain names like Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo and Grand Theft Auto: Bogota but I think they were just to deliberately throw people off the scent after Vice City.

KM.

I can see that. I also think it's sort of funny too. What are they saying about "American" culture? We're a bunch of car theifs? Or maybe we're so boring in real life that we need games like this to entertain ourselves.

Precisely. There was so much speculation on the name San Andreas, so Rockstar decided to throw people off. The biggest was Grand Theft Auto: Sin City. There were many people out there almost convinced that the next game would be set in "Sin City", but there were so many facts pointing to San Andreas, and I think Rockstar knew this.

Another GTA: London is possible, but definately not set in the past. I don't think Rockstar should venture out of USA again, as it probably wouldn't sell as well. But it's a big possibility as people could start the get bored with GTA if it starts to become the same old thing again.

I personally think they're making a great decision having about (predicted) 4 years off. This will give people time off from GTA (except for the more dedicated fans, like myself, who probably won't stop playing this game), and give them a fresh start. This to me, makes a USA-setting very likely. So I'm very divided.

London will probably come some time though. I mean, they've gone through all the cities in GTA 1, why not delve into the expansion pack?

Who knows where they will go, but I would be fairly certain it would be a considerably big connection to GTA 3, where maybe the main character will have character.

I hope it's not the GTA III character. I like all the GTA games atm that are like single titles that can stand very well on there own. I don't want a sequel if you know what I mean.

I also think America is the place to set these games, though a GTA downunder would be ammusing, see how much more **** they shovel on us

I think GTA: Australia/Down Under would be boring. But anyway.

The only other place that has potential to be good (even though it didn't hit it off so well before) is London.

But I hope it's not a Sequel, but I would definately not be surprised if it is. But hey, who expected the way San Andreas went, moving away from the GTA 3 and Vice City "Mob" storyline (even though the Mafia are in it)?

I didn't read all posts so don't go all p!ssy at me.

I'd like to see a GTA where the crimelord is a midget, with red hair. That would crack me up. The smaller, the better.

Well online is the next step. Whatever the next GTA game is and where ever it is set having some form of online play must be included. And considering we are talking about next generation platforms too (either PS3 or Xbox2) an online mode will be virtually necessary. Of course R* could make a game without online but I think people would be very disappointed by that.
As for what the online modes may be is hard to tell. They could be a bonus and not needed to finish the game or the whole point of it. There are already ideas in SA that could be used in a future GTA, mainly the Gangs.
However, it could be that R* may want to do something quite different with the next game. What they may be is open to speculation.

Interesting - it would be fun to see them parody their own game.
