Where Do Rockstar Go Next?

Well online is the next step. Whatever the next GTA game is and where ever it is set having some form of online play must be included. And considering we are talking about next generation platforms too (either PS3 or Xbox2) an online mode will be virtually necessary. Of course R* could make a game without online but I think people would be very disappointed by that.
As for what the online modes may be is hard to tell. They could be a bonus and not needed to finish the game or the whole point of it. There are already ideas in SA that could be used in a future GTA, mainly the Gangs.
However, it could be that R* may want to do something quite different with the next game. What they may be is open to speculation.
SO! many people want this, why? I dont see the point its not GTA.
I would rather you have it the way it is, i dont see how they can incorporate online into a game of such proprtions, cause no doubt the next one willl be even bigger.
If you wanna play GTA play GTA, if you wanna go online play frickin Halo or something thats what i do!

Yeah, I think GTA games are not an online type of game, I think they are the best one player games in the world but any online mode would probably take away from the single player gameplay and it also wouldn't be GTA.

It would take away, but I think Rockstar would be working hard on how to incorporate the GTA style into the Online Play. I, like slackbladder, think Online Mode is inevitable, especially on the PS3. The PS3 will have the expectation for many that Online Mode will be available in almost every game, and I don't see why Rockstar wouldn't cash in on that feature.

I personally wouldn't care less for it. I mean I'm happy cruising around 1 player doin' my thing. I would like to see a Co-operative Mode, but hey, I haven't really cared much in the past.

Still, GTA Online is inevitable for GTA 4.

I dunno, I've been thinking every grand theft auto has been based on an american state, except for london '69. I'd like to see atleast one grand theft auto make it to Canada, I think Toronto and surrounding cities would be perfect.

I suppose Rockstar are trying to theme the games around cultural and popular themes that people can resonate with.

Grand Theft Auto III didn't really have a central theme but it was loosely based on the mob culture seen in a lot of gangster movies like The Godfather and Goodfellas.

Vice City borrowed from films like Scarface and TV shows like Miami Vice and was set in the same place and time as them. The music and fashion in the game heavily reflect that.

San Andreas borrows from the gangsta rap culture, is at least partly based round the violent gang wars of early 90s Los Angeles and again has music that reflects that culture and time.

I like the idea of taking something like 1986 Miami or 1992 Los Angeles and using music, fashion and movies as something to build up a theme for the game. It definitely adds something to the game.

I don't think that. It's only like the first 10% of the game. GTA3 really didn't have any theme. I think they had a hard enough time converting from 2D to 3D.

You're right I suppose. I suppose the only theme was that it was about gangsters of one stripe or another.

Absolutely. Menace II Society is one of the movies San Andreas was related to. I, somehow, see elements of "Friday".

But it's not 100% based on that culture in every game. GTA 3 was based on Mob-life, but not the Mafia Mob, essentially. Yakuza, Triads, Mafia, Columbian Cartel - all very famous "Mobs", and each of their gang-life was presented in GTA 3.

Now I agree that it wasn't as much based on those things as Vice City was to Scarface, or San Andreas is to Rap Culture, but the relation was still there.

ND4SPD -- I doubt Canada will be involved with the GTA series. Ever. Period. Neither will Australia. London has a big criminal empire there, with the Jamaican Yardies and the general London Gangsters, so that makes for a big sale. Although it wouldn't sell as well as San Andreas.

Personally, I don't GTA could go much higher. Even though they could add a lot more to the game, I think San Andreas is the peak. But I doubt it will ever hit rock-bottom in terms of popularity. It's just that the Rap Culture sold so well, even non-GTA fans and people who aren't educated to GTA, were buying this game. Not seen in GTA 3 and Vice City. And I doubt it will happen in the next installment.

The next GTA will return to the amount of sales and popularity that Vice City enjoyed.

Interesting - it would be fun to see them parody their own game.
Yeah. I'm meaning. Keep all of the big heavy gangsters. The Latinos(SP), Italians, African/Americans and so on so fourth, but make the big boss man. The pastry of the pie. The b00bs on a blonde. The big man. A midget with red hair. A Ginga-Midget. Say you get to the last mission. You have to take down the leader. Well you get to his office. The big chair swings around and to your shock/horror. It's a midget with red hair. That'd be funny

Did it ever? I'm still taking pills for it. That and Cat Scans every month. Speaking of which. I think I just bummed SublimeDood10 out. :D

I'd like to see a world wide GTA.

I wouldn't. It would just be too over-done. I actually wouldn't mind a London GTA. Just as long as they done it right. A GTA similar to Getaway would suck.

They should do it along the lines of Snatch or Lock-Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels. Just without the extent Sarcasm and Parody. And make a good storyline.

I think GTA:PS3 will be of similar size to San An... but they will increase Res, Polygons, Draw Distance, Peds/Cars visible and effects...

To all those Online haters for GTA out there... Did anyone play GTA1 across a LAN?

I played it across a LAN with 3 PC's... and it was awesome... Basically it's just like a deathmatch... but with GTA rules... to date it's been one of my favourite network/online experiences...

Now with a city the size of SA... you'd need at least 32 people... and they'd all be on your radar... and of course you could then join/create gangs... go on hunts and kill loads of people together... go and steal the tank.... the hunter... do drive-bys... the possibilities are endless... but trying to pin a storyline to multiplayer GTA online just won't be possible I think... unless they turn it into a MMORPG... and not a lot of people have the time/money or inclination to play them...

So GTA:PS3 will have a big city that looks better... a new city... a new storyline... but it will have online components that you will be able to play as standalone sessions that don't link to the story. Online type battles could take place in various forms...
Territory battles... (Each gang starts in a certain territory and they have to hold/take over more by killing gang members... taking out hideouts... claiming turf... Protecting leader... protecting turf etc...
Deathmatch... all vs all... kill as many times as you can before you die/get busted 10 times.
Killing Spree... Cause as much mayhem as you can in the city before you die/get busted 10 times. (Winner is the one with the most destruction/cops killed/players killed etc)
Car Thief... Steal a list of cars and deliver them to your garage... each player/team has a list and a garage and the first to complete it wins... (Look out for people stealing your cars out of your garage though?!)
Cops Vs Robbers... two teams... one are crims... one are cops... Criminals cause havoc... Cops get reports of havoc being caused and Crims with wanted stars appear on radar... or Crims spoted by other cops too... Each cop has ten lives... each crim can die or get busted ten times... last team standing... Cops would always restart in HQ... but would be able to tool up their weapons/cars.

Can you see the possibilities yet?

I can see it being awesome... altho I'll probs never own a PS3... and/or a decent broadband pipe to play it on... it would be amazing though...

GTA, GTA: London 1969 and GTA 2 weren't very popular in terms of sales. Saying people who weren't educated to GTA were not buying GTA III is total BS. GTA III had more sales than any other GTA, as did VC, as has/will SA. I see this trand contnuing.

Yeah, I can see the possibilities, but these are basically mini games (of which you forgot to mention street races), I don't think multiplayer mini games are going to double sales. I think they'd increase sales, but then again I think many people would still buy a SP GTA game. It WILL happen, but I'm not too excited about it yet.

This is exactly what I mean tho... Unless GTA turns into a MMORPG (Which will kill sales if you ask me) then all online components will always be mini games... this is what Online games are... They're killing each other, killing someone else, racing each other etc... you can't have a story line unless it's a MMORPG...

The next GTA will be Single Player... it might be two player split screen... but it won't be fully multiplayer but will have multiplayer fun in it...

That will definatly kill sales, I think the mini games are just a cheap way to say it's online though. I know it's the only sensible way to do it but I just think it's not good enough if that's all they'll ever do for online play.

They have alot of time to work on the next game, but they also have new software to program for, and they have new hardware to take advantage of. The next one may have online mini gaes, but if it does they won't be of great quality in my opinion.

I meant "many many more uneducated GTA fans are buying San Andreas...". You know what I meant. You're just upset because you haven't got your Nicotene Patch for San Andreas.

It'll come in good time, brother.

I was just thinking this today: The next GTA main character needs to be a chic. That simple change would make almost the entire gaming expierence different. Not to mention: What's more contriversial in a game than picking up hookers? Whoring YOURSELF out! I think that is what they should do to keep things interesting.

That has nothing to do with the fact the sales will just continue to rise at a large rate. Also, the next one will be on PS3, people will buy this console, but not many people are going to play PS2 games on it, people will want to see what R* can do with the new technology, I think sales will continue to increase.

Th-th-that's kinda weird man.....Anyway, if you were being serious I think that would decimate sales...and would probably be cut in 112 countries..

I see your point, but I still don't think the next GTA will get as many saled as San Andreas. It has reached it's peak. And a very big peak, indeed.

87chevy -- That's a very odd wish you have there. "Whoring yourself out" would be viewed as a Hooker Game in the eyes of many countries, and I doubt it would be allowed. But I know you're just kidding. Funny idea. 👍
