My initial impression of this game were, well, not good. When it arrived on my doormat I impatiently tore off the wrapping with as much gusto as I had all those years ago when my PS1 arrived with the first Gran Turismo.

In retrospect, GT5 it could never hope to live up the the huge expectations I had laid at it's feet.

One week in though, and I am in love. Yes, there are LOTS of things I don't like about this game which have all been mentioned in these hallowed forum halls, so I will not go over them again. Deep down though, this game is just so.....GT. It still has the spirit of the 1st game, you just have to do a little digging and be a little more forgiving for its failings.

What really swung it for me was the Lupo Gti challenge. 1 lap of Nordschliefe in a Lupo Gti cup car against 15 other identical cars. It was just pure driving pleasure and a hoot. Also a few laps of Le Mans in my fave car also saw me grinning like an idiot. When I realised that 4 hours had passed and it was 2am on a work night, I knew that GT was back!

I look forward to many updates to come but even if they don't, I will still love this game. Warts and all. 👍

I agree! Although, I'm sort of in a middle state where the structure of the game is a bit disappointing, but there are lots of little bits that really impress! The climate / weather change system is very impressive indeed, and the track grip "evolution" from day to night is quite challenging, too.

I was looking forward to that Lupo cup car race, but I found it a bit too easy. I might see if I can make it a bit harder for myself and have another go.

I've found myself wasting hours in the photo-mode (not really taking many photos, just wandering about the circuits, largely!) and the course creator (which I think I may have just about got my head around now). All I need to do now is find out if I can race on my courses online...

The Lupo challenge i thought i had screwed myself. I used the car that i won, and had done nothing to it, however when I was 5 seconds up at the first time check i realized that it wasn't the race it was meant to be. Way too easy.

Same here. I´ve started to really enjoy the game now. Today in the morning I started to do what I like to do the most. Test drive my cars to see wich is the best. I really started to like Cape Ring alot(except for the jump). And with the new driving physics, its pure plessure. The SLS really surprised me! I never thought it was going to beat the ZR1 C6! But the Viper ACR is still the king (in Cape Ring Periphery, at least).

This. Gran Turismo has always been 75% realism, 25% KY. Once you realise that, you begin to understand the game. 👍

i never understood why people didn't like the game. I loved it from the moment I put it in. I even like the intro! It was never meant to be a race "driver" sim like f1, and I didn't really care much for damage, so the game never had anything wrong. (Plus, why would you want to crash anyways?! for me, if i crash in a game, thats another way of saying press start and restart the race.

Man that's well said honestly. Yeah there are flaws, yeah some things simply suck but deep down we all know the game is still GT, it just feels right and no-one can stop playing it. No other game gives me so much driving pleasure, and the only time I ever got bored with GT is when I did all the single player stuff over and over. Thank god for online racing in GT5 :sly:

The only concern I have now is keeping my GF happy and combine her with my GT addiction :scared:

kinda similar to you. especially the lupo cup challenge! i loved that race and it really inspired me. unlike the prize i receved for my effort..

So glad to have struck a chord with others. Thing is, I am kind of a weird gamer, expectations wise. I love nothing more than to take car out on a track and do a couple of laps, then watch the replay, then mess about with photo mode, that can see me busy for a couple of hours. Occasionally I'll do a challenge or race to get some credits for that all important car I've got my sights on. Online mode really doesn't interest me as to be honest, I just don't have the time. Although maybe I am just a bit of a lone gamer, always have been. Maybe I just need to jump onto online mode and give it a go. We'll see!

Off to play more GT!! :sly:

I'm pretty sure if the game had no other tracks than Nurburgring and Le Sarthe, and no other cars than the 200 premium cars, I would be a happy camper.

I keep digging and digging, but my copy still seems to have a 10th of the events of GT4. My copy still has many events with only 1 to 3 races. And when peeps who are 75% complete still haven't managed to "dig" out anymore, I really don't think the best spade in the world will unearth more events for me.

I was DEEPLY sceptical about this game and had pretty low expectations as the final release date arrived.

Like the OP said, there is a ton wrong with this game, BUT! I can happily play with / as a "Standard" car, and forgive what I see, when I hear the other cars roaring around me.

The feel, and sound of fighting through a tight pack is pure magic!

The Standard cars are still a huge issue for me and many people, but when you're in race of closely matched cars, all that fades away as you jostle, correct and outbrake your way to a photo-finish... THAT'S how GT should be!

I love this thread title! Had to respond.

You stole my lines. ;)

Warts and personality issues aside, there just isn't a game series like Gran Turismo. There are just other racing games. They don't have the feel, the flavor, the essence, the passion which you find in a GT game. Yes, the level system kind of blows, the A-Spec game is too short, the used lot is too small, the economy is too stingy, some of the prize cars are lame, etc. But, there's just nothing else out there like it so I keep racing and finding new love around every turn.

By the way, ditto to robmuzz, except for the Standard car sentiment. Love' em all.

I'm in total agreement. I try a game out and if I don't like it I leave and turn it off. Sniping about something is just wishful thinking, as if it will make any difference at all.

My first love is Route 246. I've walked it twice in real life in Tokyo and it is still one of the most pleasant walks I take in my life. I've "driven" it 10's of thousands of times in many different cars and it never gets old.

Check these out:

Seattle is the other one I like that I have also walked.

For the first time since purchasing GT5, I felt slightly bored with it last night.

Then, I bought the LF-A and that all changed. One of my favorite cars in the game hands down -- and that sound!

Good thing! Yeah! GT is just "so GT"... it's one un-explainable feeling... You feel at the same home you've been since GT1.

I do this too... testing my cars! I even do some TopGear-a-like tests with tight budgets, etc!

The same is true for me. I'm not satisfied with my performance in a race if I bump another car even the slightest.

I love this game!

I started to find more faults and negative things about it the more I played, but never bothered with photo mode until last night. I am now a changed believer. Even if you aren't a shutterbug, you gotta admit some of the pictures you can take are gobsmackingly beautiful - now you see where PD invested their time in.

It is good to see a growing number of people are reliving the real GT experience 👍

I liked the game from the start and really could not understand the haters.

Yes there are flaws and no not all the tracks we've come to love over the years are in.
But when I'm screaming with my (standard) 3000GT over the all new cape ring track
I can't do anything else than forget the world around me and enjoy myself.

I definitely agree with the OP.

Deep, deep, deep into gameplay, when I'm not thinking about graphics(not that I do, I'm just making a point), I can't help but get this nostalgic GT2 feeling.

I have liked the game from the beginning and quite cannot understand where there is a lack of depth. I've been playing every night for about two to three hours since the day ot cam out and I'm only at level 16, I have completed very few events and only about half of the speacial events. I've dabbled in B-Spec and Photomode. I own about 35 cars. I have yet to go online once and I have not even touched the track editor yet! The only issue I forsee is getting enough credits to buy every car I want! I have to start trading with all of you. All in all I can't see getting bored with GT5 for a very, very long time...

That exact same thing struck me the other day. Back then, GT2 just felt like such a logical expansion of the GT concept, but it also had its flaws and disappointments. GT3 was very pretty, but in some ways it felt like it did nothing to further the series, whilst GT4 brought in the whole car encyclopaedia idea. I'd like to see PD keep their momentum up, and I look forward to what they bring us next.

Yes, photomode is incredible in GT5! Last night I found the "Magnification" setting under "Camera Options". Change that puppy to 2x and, well, the resolution doubles. Holy insane hi-res photos Batman!

Great but I wanted a racing game not a photo creator :(

I loved it at first, and then I hated it for a while, and then I loved it again. Then I remembered that all GT games have been like this.

I am aware that GT5 has problems, flaws and more bugs than an Insect Zapper on a hot summers night.
But, I love this game and here is why:
I am 50 years old, I never was into gaming of any kind until some years ago someone with a Playstation 1 and GT2 put a controler in my hand and said 'you like cars, give it a go'
I now play all sorts of games but GT is still my passion and the reason I own a PS3 !!
Every time I load GT5 I get that same tingly feeling in my stomach that I got all those years ago, I don't let the bugs frustrate me as there is ALWAYS the perfect moment, the perfect lap, the perfect pass that makes it all worth while.
