Where Gran Turismo 7 Stands Four Years After Launch

Gran Turismo 7 celebrated its fourth anniversary last week, and it’s worth taking a look back at how the game has evolved since its release. What started as a somewhat turbulent launch has quietly turned into one of the longest-supported titles in franchise history, and the past 12 months in particular have been some of the most transformative yet...

Four years. Wow.

Thank you, Jordan. I've come and gone over these years since the GT5 days. I hope you've been rewarded for any work you put in and for your commitment to GT. You definitely helped mold its universe. Here's to another 25 years!

"GTPlanet was created in 2001 by then-14-year-old Jordan Greer as a dedicated fan site for Gran Turismo 2. Originally hosted on MSN Communities, it grew from a personal project into the web's largest sim-racing community, now covering various racing titles, news, and esports.
Key Origins Details:
Founder: Jordan Greer.
Launched: 2001.
Inspiration: The desire to create a website after receiving Gran Turismo 2 as a Christmas gift in 1999.
Initial Platform: MSN Communities.
Evolution: Started as a small community for one game, eventually expanding into a massive, independently operated resource for all things sim-racing."

You were 14 when you created GTP?

if Polyphony Digital wants to mark that occasion with something truly special, the clock is ticking. Whether that means Gran Turismo 8, a further evolution of GT7, or something else entirely remains to be seen.

Business-wise, the thing to do would be to release a Spec IV with a bunch of nostalgia content and a bunch of future-oriented content added. No reason to combine the 30th anniversary with the launch of a new version, since the launch of GT8 will be an occasion all its own.

They took our jerbs!

I remember gripping the wheel at Daytona, first turn. Original GT7 felt amazing. imo :)

My journey started with PSX and Gran Turismo. I remember grinding races on Sunday mornings before eating breakfast... Good times.
Anyway, I never played GT6 & Sport.
Bought 7 day one. Got me hooked and I'm still playing today.
Is it perfect? Hell no, but it's Gran Turismo.

Not many people play the championships compared to before. For my local UK region about 5 people in total were in GT1 and a similar amount in GT2. Only about 3 of us did more than 2 rounds. You will get 2 gold cups if you just complete the races really. So I see a drop in engagement.

The next GT version I think was decided to be delayed awhile and paid DLC has taken a chance to test the market. In the bigger picture Sony seem to be changing plans on what they are doing with live services and even more recently an uncomfirmed choice to abandon PC releases, possibly because of Project Helix Xbox.

Something new should hopefully be announced this year.

Right now more people will need to purchase the PS5 Pro to enjoy GT7 at its best and to make use of the new PSSR version, and additional versions in the pipeline.

Great article.

Esports poor handling by Sony is evident when you sum it up succinctly as you did.
Did Sony ever comment on their “no prize money” stance, or were they even asked? I seems so petty. Give those people a bone, it’s kind of insulting tbh.

So GT7 came out in 2022 ?!
And it completed 4 entire years last week in 2026?

4 years young!

I know this is far from shared point of view, but For me, it's only half life, the game can easily last another 4 more years in my eyes.

Of course I would welcome GT8 whenever it comes, but I honestly am not in a rush for it. Whenever PD/Kaz and Sony decide to release it, hopefully exclusively on PS6... Anytime after 2028 is fine with me... Realistically and again, I wouldn't mind getting the PS6 PSVR3 GT8 combo in 2030 ;)

Am Not in a rush to upgrade.

Gt7 has still plenty of life left.

In all honesty, GT7 seems in an upwards trajectory right now. As odd as it may sound. Spec III introduced more tracks, more cars, more concepts, new partnerships, more tools, better handling for direct drive wheels, new tires(TBD for new physics), new events, new paid DLC.......... What other game has this amount of stuff happening right now? 🤷‍♂️

Call me crazy but I think the game’s kinda popping off in 2026.

Not new to racing games but this is my first GT in a long time. Now I'm using a rig + wheel to race.

CANT BELIEVE gt7 does not have voice chat in Mulitplayer! So disappointing, can anyone explain why? The game is lacking in its social side, seems to be set up more for Solitary players.

New gt8 needs a mode similar to Forza's Rivals mode where players from around the world can add their lap times from their favourite circuits and compete around the world!

Also last HUGE change needs to be accommodation for sim racers cockpit view - let us remove the damn wheel from cockpit view!!! Crazy this games been out 4 years and this hasn't been addressed.

I love the handling on gt7 just so many limitations in its systems and menus right now

I just want a long distance (real or fantasy) Highway or desert road track where evey car is allowed and I want the 1990 Lotus Esprit V8 / Lotus Turbo Esprit so badly. Then every car form the Retro Amiga game Test Drive 2 (incl. Super Cars, Muscle Cars addons) would be included in GT7.

Omission of pacific highway or other famous A to B roads is an oddity for sure and would be a breath of fresh air to add. Same for Lotus. Like, wth is up with that? Missed opportunity for the struggling brand that is Lotus…
Edit: There must be so many Togues that could be added around Tokyo if PD could get up from their laurels. Or what about Gunma of ex motoring fame? The lack of a connection to Best Motoring should have been warranted a question to Kaz. It’s such an obvious collab that never happened. Why is that?

Laurels? Yes, we need Laurels. :sly:

Excellent article; what a perfect morning read 👍👍
I'm loving GT7 - it has everything I want from a racing game now. Power Pack will keep me busy for the year and I've only just started racing online and with PSVR2 (which is AWESOME!) 😂 so this iteration will entertain me for years to come.

Im still playing the game and get excited each update. Got 1400+ hours 😅 1453 to be exact I don’t exactly do a lot now. Just try the new cars, online time trials and basically just drive whatever car track combo I’m feeling that day. But I still get excited to play the game. I guess I just enjoy the physics and format. Can’t really explain it. I just haven’t grown tired. As for grinding yes I have gotten tired of that. But everything else I’m still excited about. I guess for me I’m always looking forward to what they will add each passing update.

Do I wish for more? Yes. There are still a number of cars and tracks I wish were in the game. Even more realistic physics and sounds, dynamic weather and time of day on all tracks. Better story or career mode. Sophie AI difficulty slider even in the payed DLC. B spec mode that can race competitively and win for you, more tracks to grind large income for. Larger pay outs, reduce the prices of cars by the millions even tens of millions. The list goes on. But for what we have I’m happy enough.

Looking forward to the PSSR 2.0 effect on GT7 already tidy graphics / frame rate.
We're not playing the same game... On PS5 Pro, only the graphics modes already present on the PS5 work correctly. The PS5 Pro-specific modes degrade the image with PSSR and ray tracing, resulting in a disastrous framerate of 38 to 60fps. This leads to significant stuttering in-game and during replays. We shouldn't bury our heads in the sand about the problems we're all encountering with this version of GT7.

(Back from my self-imposed ban for a bad joke)

Great article.

As documented on these forums, I've been playing this franchise beginning with Gran Turismo in '97. I've played every numbered iteration (and all versions available for PlayStation all the way through PS5, e.g. GT Sport) and currently have over 3,100 hours in GT7.

I'm not in a hurry for GT8. I have a great deal of fun yet to have with GT7.

That runs from hot lapping in VR (I only play in VR; there's no flat screen attached to my PS5) to getting used to my new pedals (still will need a new wheel eventually) to getting back into making designs for cars and driving the new ones.

This game isn't just surviving, it's dominating four years later.

I think the anniversary would be a great time to both offer a new Spec in GT7, but also a debut development trailer for GT8 arriving in 2028/29 for the PS6. The trailer could be on a classic track like Midway, or perhaps one of several others from GT4 that we'd love to bring back, and feature only cars that we haven't seen in GT7, from new supercars to old kei cars. The new Spec or paid DLC should be like a classics or analog or kei package of classics from the GT2 era. Remind all these damn kids where we came from.
