When I am getting a dolby digital signal. Should I use DOLBY digitel ex, or dolby d PLIIx M to use my 6.1 surround setup? Which is better ex, or PLIIx?
And what's the difference between them?

Which one sounds better to you? Ultimately you need to be the judge. For my system, the DD EX provides a more discrete multi-rear center projection that ProLogic IIx.

Dolby PLII doens't use 6.1. It takes a 2 channel input and "fakes" its way to 5.1. Usually with not terribly great results in my experience.

Dolby Digital EX, on the other hand, uses the 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 straight off the source (SACD, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.) to the receiver and then to the speakers with no faking like PLII thus leaving you with a much clearer sound.

Whenever it's an option, I usually leave DD EX behind and use DTS-ES.

If you want a 6.1 signal 'faked' then use DTS Neo:6, its a far better option that Pro-logic II in terms of its ability to give a good encode from a stereo source.
